“Thought I was alone in the world,” Jason Isbell sings in the first lines of the swirling seven-minute prog-roots rocker “What’ve I Done to Help,” before adding, “until my memories gathered ’round me in the night.”
There’s a reason Isbell chose to open Reunions, his seventh album, with the image of someone up late alone, plagued and comforted by the past. In addition to being his most crisply produced, sleek recording yet, Isbell’s latest is also his most haunted and ruminative (the word “ghost’ appears no less than five times). As such,...

Jason Isbell recently announced that he and his band the 400 Unit would be releasing their new album Reunions on May 8th, a week before its originally scheduled release date on May 15th. In the meantime, the band has shared “Dreamsicle,” the newest preview track from the LP.
Produced by Dave Cobb, the song sees Isbell looking back on childhood and the heartbreak of having to leave the town you grew up in. Isbell joined his first touring band when he was about 14, and the song echoes the freedom he had...

Good news for fans eager to hear the new Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit album, Reunions: There is now a way to get it early. On Wednesday, the singer announced plans to release the album exclusively to independent record stores in the U.S. and Canada on May 8th, one week ahead of its official street date of May 15th.
Isbell and his label Southeastern Records made the decision as a show of support to independent retailers, many of whom are struggling through the Covid-19 pandemic. Shoppers will have the...

Following the group’s remote rendition of “24 Frames” last weekend, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit have released a performance of “Something More Than Free.” The song served as the title track of Isbell’s 2015 album, billed — like its predecessor, Southeastern — as a solo release.
Isbell is joined by his bandmate and spouse Amanda Shires in the center frame, and the two are surrounded by 400 Unit members Jimbo Hart, Sadler Vaden, Chad Gamble, and Derry deBorja. Together, they give a loose, live performance, accented by Vaden’s mournful swells of electric guitar.

Jason Isbell has released “Only Children,” the third track he’s shared from Reunions, his forthcoming studio album with the 400 Unit. The ballad follows lead single “Be Afraid,” with its empowering chorus to “do it anyway,” and the moody seven-minute opus “What’ve I Done to Help.”
“Only Children” is the most sparse, nostalgic offering from Isbell’s Reunions to date, weaving an intimate tale of two up-and-coming bohemians. “Will you read me what you wrote?/The one I said you stole from Dylan,” Isbell sings on the four-minute, largely acoustic track.

Jason Isbell has released “What’ve I Done to Help,” the latest track off his forthcoming album Reunions, recording with his longtime backing band the 400 Unit. Isbell’s forthcoming album was once again produced by Dave Cobb, his collaborator on each of his albums since 2013’s Southeastern.
At nearly seven minutes long, the album’s opening track offers a slightly different sonic approach from the Alabama-bred singer-songwriter. Anchored by a prominent bass line from the 400 Unit’s Jimbo Hart, the song is a moody, slow-building mid-tempo treatise on helplessness and...

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit have announced their sixth album, Reunions. The Americana singer-songwriter previews the upcoming LP with the new song “Be Afraid.”
A jangly slice of low-fi indie rock, the song is a call to action for artists to use their voices to inspire or enact change — or risk being lost in a crowd of conformists. “We don’t take requests, we won’t shut up and sing,” Isbell barks, “tell the truth enough you’ll find it rhymes with everything.”

When Emmy Rossum threatened to leave Shameless if she didn’t receive pay equal to that of her costar William H. Macy, he was nothing but supportive.
“It’s a no-brainer,” the actor recently told People Now. “It’s just sort of obvious. Emmy is in most of the scenes, she works harder than anybody else, she’s a brilliant actress. She’s the glue of the cast.”
Last year, Rossum, 31, made headlines when she refused to sign on for the Showtime drama’s eighth season unless she was offered more than Macy to make up for the seven years she was paid significantly less.

When Steven Soderbergh is asked about the state of filmmaking, he often points to the American films of the ’60s and ’70s as a counterpoint to the broken state of today’s industry. “The bottom line is that at a certain period in time, from 1966 to 1976, the most successful movies were also the best movies, and that’s just not true anymore,” the director said in a 2014 interview.

Soderbergh may complain a lot, but he’s never been passive about it. Throughout his career, he has constantly experimented with different ways to make and distribute his films by thinking outside the box and pioneering new technology. With “Logan Lucky,” Soderbergh’s finally fulfilling his plans to launch a self-distribution company capable of releasing a studio-size film, but it’s not the first ambitious effort in a career defined by risky maneuvers.

Revenge films have been around for a very long time; one can look to The Virgin Spring (1960), Straw Dogs (1971), or Death Wish (1974) for their rise from serious drama to movies of a more exploitive nature. Psychic Killer (1975) adds a unique twist to the tale by having astral projection as a means to the violent ends. Quirky and laden with creative deaths, it very much embraces its weirdness, providing a fun carpet ride for the whole family (at least according to its mind-boggling PG rating).
Released stateside in December by Avco Embassy Pictures, Psychic Killer, aka The Kirlian Force, only cost $250,000 and came and went like a phantom in the night. Critics paid it no mind either, and it was relegated to video store shelves and gas station rentals. On the surface, that’s understandable; a B cast with a former actor turned fairly unproven B director (Ray Danton – Deathmaster), and...

Framed as more of a superhero origin movie than ancient curse mystery, a messy plot unravels fast
Be afraid, for here it is … again … emerging waxily from the darkness. This disturbing figure must surely be thousands of years old by now, a princeling worshipped as a god but entombed in his own riches and status; remarkably well preserved. It is Tom Cruise, who is back to launch a big summer reboot of The Mummy, that classic chiller about the revived corpse from ancient Egypt, from which the tomb door was last prised off in a trilogy of films between 1999 and 2008 with the lantern-jawed and rather forgotten Brendan Fraser in the lead. And before that, of course, there were classic versions with Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee both variously getting the all-over St John Ambulance treatment.

Sometimes life has little coincidences: you suffer from sleep paralysis for a while, and years later you come across Rodney Ascher’s documentary The Nightmare, which finally helps in explaining all those sleepless nights, while showing that’s it’s not as uncommon as you think. Fascinated, you even write up some personal thoughts on said film; and, only a few days later, you come across Be Afraid, which uses sleep paralysis as a horror device. If you didn’t know any better, you’d swear it’s stalking you. Be Afraid starts out in pretty typical horror movie fashion: Doctor John Chambers (Brian Krause) movies his family – worried wife Heather (Jaimi Paige), college dropout older son Ben (Jared Abrahamson) and somewhat creepy ghost-seeing pre-teen Nathan (Michael Leone) – out...

It’s a film akin to unambitious but well-made grindhouse movies that seem to have made up the slate of films at a local multiplex. Those solid well told stories, that seemed familiar and unimpressive, yet infectiously watchable. Those films that didn’t seem like high art because they didn’t need to be. They just needed to be entertaining.
Be Afraid follows a Dr. John Chambers, as he and his family start to discover a dark force occupying the town that they have just moved into. The familiar is combed over: a concerned wife, a snarky teenage son, a moppet, and an ending that is not guaranteed to be happy.
It’s the textbook 80’s horror movie, but it’s not a bad textbook 80’s horror movie.

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.
Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!
