only for the gore
trashgang16 January 2017
I just watched it for two reasons, first of all I have seen Gutterballs (2008) which was a big surprise. Secondly, Nick Principe I do follow so I know that being a nice guy, as seen on conventions, he can play ugly bastards.

Sadly this flick is bad on part of script, filming and sound. The script must be written on a extreme small paper, to be honest, was there a script? The way it was shot sometimes is really annoying, too close and constantly shaky cams makes it sometimes hard to watch. And the talking going on sometimes is hard to understand.

Luckily there is a lot of gore going on. But let me say that you really have to sit throughout this flick especially the beginning which is ultra slow. Once the cops arrive at the crime scene this flick opens up and give the gorehounds what they are waiting for.

The effects used for the ultra gore is sometimes nicely done and sometimes it looks ridiculous like the head being crushed. The victim captured goes full frontal in an almost explicit way. So it's just on the edge of being x-rated.

If you want to see a horror then leave it for what it is, but if you dig extreme gore and the acting doesn't bother you then this will be your stuff. Torture, rape, bondage, it's all there.

Dark. Literally.

Warning: Spoilers
Collar is a nuanced and thought provoking examination of the Catholic Church's child sexual abuse scandal and its longterm effects on the victims.

Nah, I'm just kidding. It's about a mentally challenged hulk of a raping, murdering homeless man (Nick Principe as Massive) who kidnaps a female cop one night and graphically abuses her while occasionally taking a break to kill other people. Added to the mix are a pair of drug dealers who function as a low-rent Jay and Silent Bob and help to fill in story gaps, plus two amateur internet "filmmakers" who quickly turn from arranging and filming Bum Fight clips to documentarians once they catch a glimpse of Massive in action. Mihola Terzic also plays an important part as Maria, a former rape victim of Massive's who is hellbent on revenge.

I've actually liked several of Ryan Nicholson's films but Collar just didn't work for me. Flashbacks help explain a little about Massive but also end up muddying things because we don't know why his abuse led him to the streets, or why he can apparently talk but mostly doesn't. I think the dealers and Maria are supposed to provide some comic relief but the tone of the main action is so bleak that any lightness just seems to grind things to a halt. And the character arc of one of the filmmakers is just laughable, mainly due to the actor's performance. Now, we don't usually watch movies like this for acting and story but here's where Collar fails most egregiously. We can barely see the horrible things that happen. Most of the kill scenes are simply too dark and most of the movie is filmed in such a tight frame that it's hard to get the full picture of what's going on. Nicholson was a talented effects man but the effects are too often hidden so what's the point? Seventy-odd minutes of a dark story that happens in the dark results in the feeling that an opportunity was missed.

Never have 72 minutes felt so long...
Ky-D19 October 2020
The state of filmmaking in the 2010s is truly something to behold; never before have so many movies with so little merit been made. 'Collar' is one such film, a product so devoid of talent and purpose that is a legitimate wonder it was ever made.

A hobo rapes and murders a bunch of people.

There, you have the plot of the movie. Some other stuff happens, sure, but none of it matters. The film isn't concerned with anything besides the rape and murder scenes (both of which are plentiful) and doesn't seem to be concerned if the audience is either. I dare you to name any character when the flick is over with the possible exception of the murder hobo, stupidly named Massive. All of this is meant to convey just how poor the writing is, but it still feels like I'm underselling it. To be clear, the script is beyond amateurish, it's straight up juvenile.

So how about those rape/murder scenes, are they any good? In a word, no. There's plenty of blood, guts, and boobs, but it's all so incompetently filmed, lit, staged, and acted that it fails as both exploitation and horror. In fact, between the tight shots, shaky cam, and god awful lighting, you'd be challenged to determine what is even going on half the time. That is if you care enough to even know, which you likely won't.

Whether you are looking for something scary or gross or exploitive, I promise you can find it better somewhere (anywhere?) else.

I've seen the future of horror, and its not Ryan Nicolson.
horizon200820 January 2015
Well I just had the pleasure of witnessing Collar by Mr Nicolson. and I'm actually thinking of joining some submissive internet groups now, because even though I've seen, and hated every single film by our Ryan, I still watched and suffered one more. Another total poopfest, with horrible acting, and a plot seemingly written by a 12yr old boy. Even the gore sucked danglies. I really don't know now who this guy makes films for, maybe its his family and hangers on (pardon the pun) who keep convincing him that he's great, but personally I don't think he could direct a starving man to a banquet.

I'm old enough to remember going into video stores and hiring movies purely on the gory cover (and pictures on the back) and honestly, I rented out some real stinkers back then, but I thought that kind of terrible horror movie was gone in 2015, seems not though. That said, Ryan's groupies (I shall call them the Knicolheads) will probably still love it, (just like 9yr olds love One Direction, Ryan has his 12yr olds) and I personally can't wait to chastise myself some more with the upcoming Gutterballs 2.

Or perhaps not.

Wish there was a minus rating

A true awful experience. This must be the worst movie, if it can be called a movie, that I have watched in years. I knew it was not superior intelligent horror picture or even close, but for the life of me, I am both stunned and appalled at why and how do some filmmakers stoop this low with such pile of rubbish! Don't go near this horrid waste of 90 minutes of your life. It is a revolting mix of ridiculous gore, cannibalism, or silly special effects that should have vanished since the 70s, extreme nudity, repeated revolting rape scenes and cheap sexual content all through. Needless to say, acting is preposterous, along with every other aspect of the movie itself, including a plot with enough loopholes to let an elephant through, plus the absurdity of all the events and characters and absence of logic all through. And when they try to throw in a humane dimension in the form of a lesbian relationship and parenthood (regardless of the difference it'd make had it been a straight one), this is all totally in vain for the sake of a horribly silly ending any moron would have came up with a better if given a shot at writing the script. Can't help but feel totally angry and frustrated. Need to go watch some other movie to erase the after taste of this disaster.

I Don't Know What to Say!?!?
tiskec22 November 2022
I didn't know how to rate this film. Was it good? Absolutely NOT. However, I can't pick a genre that I could base my viewpoint on.

This movie seems like someone's sick demented idea of a torture/horror porn. Constant rapes and nudity throughout. I think the film used the women in it to capture what they could of the males aged 18-30. All the females were very good looking, and the film casted them nude in what it seemed like every other scene.

If your looking for a legit horror film, I would steer clear. With the amount of sexual interaction in this film, it should be in the "weird and fu**ed up" section in an adult movie store.

I didn't know how to rate this, because I don't know how to rate porn.
