Dennis Villeneuve’s take on Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi saga Dune is something truly special. The two movies released so far have been acclaimed by both fans and critics, who loved the world that the Canadian filmmaker has managed to create. And while the film series is moving forward with Dune: Messiah, currently in the works, we know that a prequel series – Dune: Prophecy – is also in the works and that it is going to premiere later this year. A trailer has recently been released, which we reported about, which also confirmed the series’ Fall 2024 release window. Aside from the trailer, a series of stills from the series have been released, revealing some important moments and some of the characters.
The series itself is a prequel set 10,000 years before the main timeline. It will follow two sisters from the Harkonnen family as they try to save humanity from...

Dennis Villeneuve’s take on Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi saga Dune became a major hit, with both fans and critics agreeing that Villeneuve has made yet another masterpiece as far as the whole franchise is concerned. Both of the films were global hits and we know that the third and final movie of the trilogy, Dune: Messiah, is currently in the works. But, while we wait for the third movie, we are also going to see a prequel series, Dune: Prophecy, which will explore the world of Dune before the first movie. The series is going to premiere on HBO Max later this year, and we are happy to confirm that a trailer for the series has been released, confirming its Fall 2024 release window.

The Dune franchise started in 2022 with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 1. Starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Bardem, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh among others, the two movies became massive hits. And while Villeneuve will complete his Dune trilogy with the concluding Dune: Messiah, the studios have something else for us to feast on until the third movie is ready.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content shared the first trailer for Dune: Prophecy during today's Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation.
Despite being very much in line with what we've seen from Dune in theaters (albeit with perhaps a few more splashes of colour), the pressure is on this series to live up to Denis Villeneuve's critically acclaimed movies. This teaser doesn't reveal much, but so far, so good based on what we're seeing.
From the expansive universe of Dune, created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: Prophecy follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.
The series is inspired by the novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Dune: Part Two has been available to purchase on Digital services for almost a month now, but Warner Bros. has finally announced a streaming date for Denis Villeneuve's critically-acclaimed sci-fi sequel.
Fans will get to return to Arrakis from the comfort of their couches very soon, as Dune: Part Two is set to premiere on Max next Tuesday, May 21.
Although the movie didn't reach $1 billion as some predicted (always a long shot in the current box office climate), it did pass $700 million worldwide, meaning a third film based on Frank Herbert's second novel, Dune: Messiah, is likely.
Part Three hasn't been officially greenllt, but is believed to be in the early stages of development - though there's no guarantee that Villeneuve will to return to complete the trilogy.
“If we go back, it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant," the filmmaker told Empire in a recent interview.

The third installment of the movie franchise everyone’s been waiting for has finally been announced. And no, we’re not talking Dune: Messiah — it’s Downton Abbey.

Anya Taylor-Joy makes a very brief appearance in Dune: Part Two, but if and when Denis Villeneuve returns to helm his adaptation of Dune: Messiah, the Furiosa star will have a much more substantial role.
If you haven't seen the movie yet, spoilers follow.
In Part One, we learn that Paul Atreides' mother, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, is pregnant with the late Duke Leto's child. When the Fremen take in the survivors of the Harkonnen massacre, Jessica agrees to become the tribe's new Reverend Mother (she isn't really given a choice) and is "persuaded" to drink the Water of Life (a blue substance that's been extracted from a juvenile sandworm).
This gives Jessica incredible foresight and knowledge of previous generations, while also awakening similar abilities in her unborn daughter, who begins to communicate with and seemingly influence her mother's actions.

Fans of the “Dune” novel series were not shocked by much in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation. However, even if you read the original book, you were probably shocked to see the inclusion of Anya Taylor-Joy in the film. Not only was her cameo a secret, but playing the unborn Alia Atreides is something no one predicted. However, she showed up and surprised audiences. And if Denis Villeneuve has anything to say about it, Taylor-Joy’s time in Arrakis is just beginning.

This post contains spoilers for the book "Dune: Messiah."
The adaptation of "Dune: Messiah" has already been approved, but we've long wondered just how the hell director Denis Villeneuve is going to pull it off. Not only is there a 12-year time jump, and not only are major characters like Jessica unceremoniously dropped from the narrative, but the book also features a lot of political feuding that will probably have to be cut for the movie to feel even vaguely comprehensible.
For screenwriter Jon Spaihts, however, there are plenty of reasons to stay optimistic. The big one is that "Dune: Part 2" has already made a ton of changes to the narrative to make a better transition into "Messiah," and he thinks those changes are going to pay off big time going forward. As he explained in a recent interview with Mashable:
"I think [author] Frank Herbert came away from...

Rebecca Ferguson is becoming close to a household name. O.K., maybe “close” is a slight exaggeration, but her profile is bigger than her social media presence, and that’s primarily because her resume over the past decade is filled with one banger after another. “The Greatest Showman,” three acclaimed “Mission: Impossible” flicks, a Best Picture nominee in “Dune” and, likely, a second Oscar nominee in her latest blockbuster, “Dune: Part Two.” And now, she’s up for a potential Emmy nomination as Juliette, a “sheriff” in a post-apocalyptic civilization trying to discover the truth behind the gigantic, multi-level “Silo” humanity is confined to.

As the prophesied hero turned brutal ruler of the Freman, Paul Atreides is the face of "Dune" -- and thanks to Denis Villeneuve's recent blockbusters, Timothée Chalamet is the face of Paul Atreides. The actor, who earned his first Oscar nomination at the tender age of 22, puts in a fantastic performance as the multi-faceted Muad'Dib in 2021's "Dune" and this year's "Dune: Part Two," but at one point, the film's casting department wasn't certain he was the right man for the job. The reason? He was too old.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2021, "Dune" casting director Francine Maisler spoke about the challenge of assembling the right cast for the sci-fi epic and admitted that during the casting process, there was some "discussion" about Chalamet's age in relation to Paul in the original book. "All the ['Dune'] actors wanted to work with Denis Villeneuve, and some...

Before receiving a digital release last week, Dune: Part Two racked up nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office, paving the way for the third Dune film that writer/director Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya all expressed interest in making during the build-up to the second movie’s release. While the first two Dune movies were both based on the story told in Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, the third movie would move on to different source material: Dune Messiah, the second book in Herbert’s series. During an interview with The New York Times, Villeneuve confirmed that he’s writing Dune Messiah right now!
Villeneuve said, “That anger (felt by Zendaya’s character at the end of Part Two) is tremendous. I don’t want to reveal what I’m going to do with the third movie. I know exactly what to do. I’m writing it right now.

This article contains possible spoilers for Dune: Part Three and Dune Messiah.
When Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part One opened in 2021, it only took Warner Bros. six days to announce the sequel. However, when Dune: Part Two opened this past March 1—despite doing huge business and clearly paving the way for a third chapter—it took the studio over a month to confirm a film of Dune Messiah was in development. Why the delay? Well, lots of possible reasons, actually.
Even though Dune: Part Two is likely to soon cross the $700 million mark at the global box office, it was an expensive movie to make at a reported $190 million ($25 million more than Part One), plus a marketing budget that likely took that final price tag well over the $300 million mark. Once you factor in that half the box office is going to theaters, you have a low margin for profitability,...

It stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Austin Butler and others.
In Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, Timothee Chalamet plays Paul Atreides. When the movie was announced a few years ago, everyone was worried that it would be a good watch. It's been over a month since "Dune: Part Two" was released in theaters, and it's already a clear-cut success. The film's now passed the $600 million threshold at the box office and the reviews have been consistently positive; not since the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy has such a seemingly-unadaptable book been so successfully adapted to the big screen. Already, "Dune: Part Three" has been confirmed to be in development, adapting the second book in the "Dune" series, "Dune: Messiah," and hopefully wrapping up director Denis Villeneuve's planned trilogy in a nice, satisfying bow.
Already, however, there are a few challenges ahead for the Villeneuve. The first is that "Messiah" begins 12 years after the events of "Dune," which means they'll either have to delay the film a bit to let the actors age into the roles or put a lot of make-up on Timothèe Chalamet to sell the illusion that...

In Denis Villeneuve's 2021 sci-fi epic "Dune: Part One," Jason Momoa plays Duncan Idaho, a Gonaz Swordmaster in the service of House Atreides. He was robust and friendly, kind to the young Paul (Timothée Chalamet), and capable in a fight; he famously killed multiple Sardaukar warriors before being overwhelmed and slain during a Harkonnen raid on the Atrides' mansion in Arrakeen. Despite this, Frank Herbert's second "Dune" book, "Dune Messiah," sees Duncan return as a clone, Indeed, Duncan clones, called "gholas," appeared throughout Herbert's six original novels, making Duncan Idaho the only "Dune" character to hold that distinction.
Villeneuve's "Dune" was filmed in the deserts of Jordan, specifically the Wadi Rum region, making for unbearably hot shooting days. When Momoa spoke with Entertainment Weekly about filming "Dune," he admitted he was wont to explore those deserts in his spare time. He explained how Villeneuve ensured all the...

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 is well on its way to becoming one of the most successful blockbusters in Hollywood. A brilliant sequel to its impressive predecessor, the film was bigger, more visually spectacular, and more emotionally intense that the first part, which is credit to Villeneuve’s prowess and skill as a filmmaker.

Frank Herbert wrote six “Dune” novels, but Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve has made it clear that after book two, “Dune Messiah,” he’s quitting the worm-ridden desert planet Arrakis, despite his box office wins and forging such fans as Steven Spielberg. As reported by Deadline, Legendary Entertainment has secured the rights to Annie Jacobsen’s nonfiction work “Nuclear War: A Scenario” as an option for him once he’s ready to return to Earth.
Jacobsen’s book, which hit stores less than two weeks ago, is the result of a decade of research resulting in a realistic, step-by-step “just what the hell would it be like if this nightmare came true.” Just reading the New York Times review is absolutely terrifying.
Her previous works include “Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base,” “Operation Paperclip: The Secret Intelligence Program that Brought Nazi Scientists to America” and...

Imagine being born with the gift of foresight and predicting decades ago that, one day, there would be a live-action "Dune" franchise. And not only would it prove accessible to mainstream audiences, but it would also end up becoming a genuine pop-culture event and eventually spawn three entire movies from one of our most talented filmmakers around. Well, the people have spoken and their wishes couldn't be clearer: more desert, more Arrakis, and more "Dune."
After opening weekend box office numbers for "Dune: Part Two" surpassed early tracking figures, boosted by positive critical responses (including /Film's review by Chris Evangelista) and word of mouth spreading from fan screenings, the obvious has finally become official. Legendary announced that, essentially, it loves money and would like to remain in the money-making business by giving the green light to a third "Dune" movie, which is currently untitled. With “Dune: Part Two” now in the rearview mirror, what’s next for Denis Villeneuve? First, a well-deserved rest, but the director said last month that he has “four projects on the table,” including “Dune Messiah,” “Cleopatra,” and another secret project. But what about the fourth?

Exclusive: In a deal worth $500,000 against $1.5 million, Legendary Entertainment has optioned Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s nonfiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario as a potential reteam with its Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve. The expectation is that Villeneuve would take this one as another giant project after he completes Dune: Messiah, which he and Legendary are developing as the conclusion of the trilogy.
Deadline reveals the deal just as Nuclear War hits the New York Times bestseller lists. The book explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who built the weapons and have been privy to the response plans and have been responsible for those decisions should they need to be made.

Denis Villeneuve is definitely interested in making a Dune trilogy but it appears that Warner Bros. may steer away the director from such an idea. According to reports, WB is planning to release the successfully running Dune: Part Two on streaming platforms at least by April 15th. Villeneuve vehemently opposed Dune‘s dual release in theaters and HBO Max in 2020. The new move may not make the director a very happy man.

The world knows Zendaya today for being one of the biggest and most sought-after stars in the entertainment industry. She has consistently been part of some of the most exceptional projects, both the big and silver screen has seen in recent years.
But before all that fame and glory, the actress had started her journey into films and TV shows as a young Disney star.

The show she’s known for that made her climb the ladder to the top was her role as the titular protagonist of K.C. Undercover. But unlike most stars who try to conform themselves to their character, Zendaya had a different approach.
When she was offered the role in the series, she laid out clear instructions for the production on what they could and couldn’t make her character do in the series or she may have not taken it at all.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two has worm-ridden its way to success after debuting with $182 million on opening weekend. The film has earned over $514 million at the international box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024 as of now. The Timothée Chalamet starrer has also been widely regarded by critics and audiences as a masterpiece.
The film is a follow-up to 2021’s Dune: Part One, continuing the story of Paul Atreides and his mother Lady Jessica on the desert planet of Arrakis after their family is betrayed by the evil Harkonnens and the Emperor Shaddam IV. Both films are based on Dune by Frank Herbert. While the novel series has four more books, Villeneuve reported is just interested in adapting the second book and wrapping up the story with Dune 3.

Denis Villeneuve will proceed with Dune: Messiah only under a specific condition ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia; IMDb )
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune: Part Two, discusses the potential sequel Messiah. Villeneuve hints that he would only consider moving forward with Messiah, pending approval from Legendary Entertainment, if he believes it can surpass Part Two and deliver a more captivating narrative.
Denis Villeneuve highlighted the logic behind shooting both films consecutively, citing the benefits of maintaining momentum after Part One. However, he acknowledged the toll it took, spending six years continuously on Arrakis. Recognizing the need for a break, Villeneuve emphasized the significance of refining the screenplay before progressing further. He expressed concern about the risks of proceeding without a solid plan and emphasized the importance of thorough documentation to mitigate potential challenges. Should Denis Villeneuve opt to undertake Dune Messiah, he underscores the necessity for authenticity and significance.

Denis Villeneuve has already expressed interest in helming a third movie to continue the story of Paul Atreides in the Dune franchise, and he revealed one condition that will make him do so. With Dune: Part Two already rolling in cinemas, fans were treated to a spectacular show based on the reviews and general reaction of the public.
Dune (2021)
The anticipation for the third film is quite high, but it remains to be seen how the director will forge the path towards the film’s conclusion. Frank Herbert’s novel is too complicated and too “un-adaptable” to bring to the screen, even with Villeneuve’s version.

Dune: Part Two has been a triumph, with many praising the sequel as one of the best sci-fi movies of all time; not only that, but it’s been kicking ass at the box office, grossing over $500 million worldwide and counting. That all but guarantees a third installment, but director Denis Villeneuve isn’t in any rush; in fact, he told Empire Magazine that he won’t make Dune: Messiah at all unless he’s sure it’s going to be better than Dune: Part Two.
“I did both movies back-to-back, which makes absolute sense for me,” Villeneuve said. “I felt that it was a good idea to move forward right after Part One. After three weeks in theaters, “Dune: Part Two” currently reigns as the top-grossing film of 2024 with $512.1 million globally. That’s about $80 million more total gross than its 2021 predecessor, and guarantees Warner Bros. will greenlight “Dune: Messiah,” right? Not so fast. Empire reports that director Denis Villeneuve wants to make a third “Dune” film, but he needs an extended break from the first (and an idea that makes it “real” and “relevant”).

Though it has its defenders in 2024, David Lynch's "Dune" remains a divisive entry in the director's canon. While some argue that "Dune" is better than its reputation suggests, there are still many, many things wrong with "Dune" 1984 — things which led to a poor critical and commercial reception for Lynch's adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel. Since that inauspicious debut, Herbert's epic story maintained a reputation for being "unfilmable," due to its sheer scale and detailed lore. Then, Denis Villeneuve came along.
Back in 2018, the French-Canadian filmmaker announced he was planning a "Dune" adaptation spread across two films, the first of which arrived in 2021 at the height of the global pandemic.
