  • Paula White : In addition to the unique eastern exposure, this has outstanding flow. And this living room is the largest we've seen.

Carrie Wells : It's 342 square feet. It's actually the smallest we've seen.

Paula White : Uh, no. West 83rd was 260 square feet.

Carrie Wells : No, 360 square feet. 20 by 18.

Paula White : Well, 98th Street was definitely smaller.

Carrie Wells : 348 square feet. It also had northern exposure.

Al Burns : All right, she has a memory thing. Don't...

Paula White : So, uh, let's look at the plus side. This is a recent reno. They will install new appliances. Uh, there's... minimal street sound. Oh, and... have I mentioned, the former tenant started her very own successful cupcake company right here.

Carrie Wells , Al Burns : Oh.

    Paula White : Yeah.

Carrie Wells : Well, it's a good thing she was making cupcakes, 'cause you couldn't fit a whole cake in here.

  • Al Burns : [after going apartment hunting]  Why so shy in there? I was hoping you'd speak up.

Carrie Wells : You asked me to come along; I'm gonna give my opinion.

Al Burns : I asked you along because the brokers think a couple is more stable.

Carrie Wells : [amused laugh]  Ha! You brought me along for stability? That's a first.

    [letting another tenant pass]

Carrie Wells : Oh. Besides, your red couch, there's no way it's gonna fit in that living room.

Al Burns : Well, I hate to tell you, I got rid of it.

Carrie Wells : What? The one from Syracuse? Why? I liked that couch.

    Al Burns : I remember.

Carrie Wells : It was firm, but forgiving in all the right places.

  • Al Burns : You know what? That couch went to Goodwill back in March. When was the last time you were even at my place? Like, a year ago?

Carrie Wells : One year, four months, three days.

Al Burns : Ah, we had a plan last month; I was gonna cook my famous lemon sole, and you were gonna clean out my closet.

Carrie Wells : [teasing]  Wow. I wonder why that plan fell through.

  • Cherie Rollins-Murray : DOA is Christopher Jenkins, the celebrated defense lawyer. Do you know him?

Al Burns : From Court TV, yeah. But also, I testified against a client of his once. On cross, Jenkins tore me a new one.

Cherie Rollins-Murray : Yeah, well, you wouldn't be the first cop he did that to.

Al Burns : He was good. He somehow stayed a nice guy. His man lost, but he still took me out for drinks after, and he paid.

  • Al Burns : Hey, Jo.

Joanne Webster : Hi. How's the apartment hunting going?

Al Burns : You know, I never realized real estate brokers occasionally just make things up.

  • Carrie Wells : So, Jo, what do we got?

Joanne Webster : Okay, the bullet entry tear pattern in the back of the jacket and the direction of his fall would indicate that the shooter was behind him and to his left.

Al Burns : What kind of mugger shoots his victim from behind?

Carrie Wells : Here's the thing. Car door's open, right? Body's over here. Why?

Al Burns : The perp sneaks up on him... but Jenkins hears him, moves back to face him.

Carrie Wells : No, Jenkins was shot from behind. So if he turned to face the shooter, he would have had to turn away again in order to be shot in the back.

Joanne Webster : He saw the gun and instinctively turned away.

Al Burns : Nah, you never turn away from a gun in your face. You ever been mugged? About the only thing you can remember is the gun.

Carrie Wells : He wasn't afraid of being shot. He was heading back to his car. Jenkins wasn't mugged. He knew his killer.

  • Mary Garroto : He gave everything to his clients. Days, nights, weekends. Professor Jenkins used to say there wasn't a case he ever lost he couldn't have won if he'd just worked a little harder.

Al Burns : How about when he did lose? Anyone ever take exception?

Mary Garroto : Think one of his clients did this, you don't understand what Professor Jenkins was about. His clients understood his dedication. They adored him for it.

Al Burns : Even the ones who went to jail?

Mary Garroto : There's obviously some unhappiness when a conviction results, but... I-I can't even imagine it.

  • Cherie Rollins-Murray : I talked to a Father Kerrigan. Simkins was at an AA meeting, just like he said.

Al Burns : You don't get a better alibi than a priest.

  • Al Burns : Smart not mentioning we came down here together. To my cousin's wedding.

Carrie Wells : That was a memorable weekend.

Al Burns : Mmm. You mean the giant cockroach under the bed in our fancy hotel? I remember that.

Carrie Wells : Really? Is that all you remember?

  • Eliot Delson : You do realize that certain individuals with a good deal of forethought went to a lot of trouble to keep the Shawn Manning parole as quiet as possible.

Al Burns : Best laid plans, right?

Eliot Delson : It's a media firestorm out there.

Al Burns : Well, don't look at us. Anybody could have been the source of that.

Eliot Delson : Yeah, well, now that it's out, we better find Manning sooner rather than later. Otherwise, the optics could kill us.

Al Burns : A murder suspect is running lose. A rape victim is being harrassed by the media. You're worried about optics?

Eliot Delson : When I said they could kill, I was including Manning. You weren't here when the rape went down. The city went crazy. I've never seen anything like it before or since. We had mobs in the street looking for this guy. Luckily, we found Manning first, which is exactly what I expect to happen this time.

  • Cherie Rollins-Murray : Your employees all dress like that?

Bruno : Why? What are you, the health inspector here?

Cherie Rollins-Murray : Section 81.13. "Food workers shall wear hats, caps, hairnets, or other hair coverings to effectively keep hair from having contact with exposed food or food contact surfaces."

Al Burns : Take another look.

Bruno : Okay, fine. I saw on the news about this guy getting whacked. I figured keeping my mouth shut would be in my best interest. But now I see how important you consider my cooperation. Yeah, I saw him. He was here like you said.

Al Burns : Was he with him?

    Bruno : Yeah.

Al Burns : Shawn Manning. Come in here a lot?

Bruno : Just that one time.

Al Burns : Did he ask about a job?

Bruno : Job? No, he came here, he wanted to eat something. That the rapist guy, huh? He's an animal.

Al Burns : If you see him or you remember anything else, you call me.

Cherie Rollins-Murray : And buy some hairnets.

Al Burns : [turning to leave]  Section 81? How'd you know that?

    Cherie Rollins-Murray : I made it up.

    Al Burns : You're learning.

  • Al Burns : You really think he's innocent.

Carrie Wells : Yeah, and I think you need to take a harder look at Cordero. If not for the rape, at least for Jenkins' murder. Look, Cordero transferred through Dannemora Prison when Shawn was there. Maybe that's when Shawn got onto him.

Al Burns : Okay, hypothetically, but hypothetically only, in order for Cordero to have a motive to kill Jenkins, he has to be the real rapist. Otherwise, he'd have nothing to fear, right?

    Carrie Wells : Agreed.

Al Burns : Okay. To make a case against Cordero for the rape, we'd have to put him in the park at the time.

    Carrie Wells : Also agreed.

Al Burns : Except there's no indication he was in the park. There's not a single witness.

Carrie Wells : You've been looking into Cordero yourself, haven't you?

Al Burns : Of course I've been looking into Cordero. I got Murray out there tracking him right now. But there's no "there" there, Carrie. There's not a single database where his name ever comes up.

Carrie Wells : You're forgetting the one database we haven't tapped into.

  • Al Burns : All right, you want to tell me what the hell you're doing?

Carrie Wells : ADA Frost parked his car in this lot. I saw the ticket stub on his windshield. 892.

    Al Burns : Frost?

Carrie Wells : [finding the corresponding ticket]  Yep. And look at this. The receipt is stamped; last night, right before Cordero was shot.

Al Burns : Carrie, Frost is gonna be the next Manhattan D.A.

Carrie Wells : Yeah, I wouldn't bank on that.

  • Carrie Wells : We can place Gordon Frost at Cordero's murder.

Eliot Delson : Gordon Frost? He's the head of the Homicide Bureau. He goes to murder scenes all the time.

Carrie Wells : Really? Before they're committed?

Eliot Delson : Okay... what are you two talking about? And I say that with some reluctance.

Al Burns : Frost parked his car at Molinero's ten minutes before Bobby Cordero was killed there.

Eliot Delson : Sometimes my therapist says "Begin at the beginning" and, oh, I want to kill him when he says it, but I think I'm gonna say that now.

  • Al Burns : We think Manning and Jenkins made Cordero for the Central Park rape. We think Jenkins then took it to Gordon Frost.

Eliot Delson : Okay, but then how do we get to Gordon Frost killing someone he's never heard of?

Carrie Wells : Because he had heard of him. Listen, we got a report from a mounted cop that can place Cordero in Central Park the night of the rape; only that report never made it into the D.A.'s file.

Al Burns : Gordon Frost was in charge of coordinating the evidence. He had the confession from Manning, but he also had DNA from the scene that did not match his. The last thing he wanted was to open it up to other suspects.

Carrie Wells : So he suppresses the evidence. Listen, Frost figures out that Jenkins is onto Cordero. He knows that eventually that cop's report is gonna surface, and then he can kiss his D.A. career goodbye.

Eliot Delson : So he kills Jenkins and then Cordero to cover his tracks. I can't believe I just said that. Who else knows about this?

Al Burns : Just you and us.

Eliot Delson : Good. Keep it that way.

    Carrie Wells : What?

Eliot Delson : If word gets out that we're looking at Frost, right or wrong, we're all looking for new jobs.

Carrie Wells : [talking over him]  Eliot, we can't just close our eyes and make believe this didn't happen. Shawn Manning's life is on the line here.

Eliot Delson : Look, this city is going through a rather painful case of deja vu right now. Before I make that worse, we need to get Manning off the streets. Then we go after Frost.

  • Al Burns : It will take a little time, but your record will be expunged and your name cleared.

Shawn Manning : My name cleared.

Al Burns : We matched Cordero's DNA to samples from the clothes Rupa Nair was wearing. Not that what I say matters, but I'm sorry for everything you had to go through.

Shawn Manning : I feel worse for Chris. I mean, however long it took... at least I still get to walk out of here now.

  • Carrie Wells : We had her right where we wanted her.

Al Burns : It's okay. I'll find a place. Or maybe I won't. The fact is, I'm doing pretty good in the one-ones for now.

Carrie Wells : I like living in the same borough. There's something cozy about it.

Al Burns : Did you just say "cozy"?

Carrie Wells : You know what? Fine, move to Manhattan. See if I care.

Al Burns : [laughing]  Well, I can't now. I finally bought a new sofa. You should come over... tonight and try it out.

Carrie Wells : Yeah, I can't. I gotta... I gotta... wash my hair.

Al Burns : Oh, fine. It's a really nice couch.

Carrie Wells : I bet it is. But you know what's gonna happen. First it's the couch, then it's the lemon sole, then the next thing you know... I'm cleaning your closet.
