Watching movies on the big screen is an indulgence these days. Everyone prefers sitting in their homes, opening Netflix or Prime or any other streaming site, and watching whatever they feel like. But seems like viewers will have to indulge a little more than usual if they want to experience movies and not just watch them. Just ask Christopher Nolan, and he can tell you all about the IMAX experience.

And now, others are looking to emulate the same in their movie-making. In their 2025 slate, IMAX will be releasing no less than 14 movies in their “filmed for IMAX” format. And out of these 14, 5 of them are superhero flicks from both Dcu and the MCU. Looks like it will be less of Netflix and more of IMAX for next year.

IMAX reveals a sizeable list of films coming to the format in 2025: here’s what to expect and when to expect it.
When it was reported around this time last year that Tom Cruise was engaged in a rather ‘spirited’ series of conversations with studio executives regarding Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning's IMAX allocation, it ushered into the foreground a fact that had steadily been emerging over the last few years.
The IMAX technology (and ticket price uplift that accompanies it) has established itself as something of a kingmaker in Hollywood. Studios that can secure the longest IMAX runs for their films can gain a much-needed commercial edge over their rivals.
Such was the case with Dead Reckoning, as the film’s brief IMAX window was surely a factor in it being beaten at the box office by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a movie mostly featuring people in rooms talking.

While 3D cinema had come and gone in popularity, one premium screen that was made popular by Christopher Nolan’s attempt to use the technology is IMAX. Originally, the special cameras and format were meant for nature & science documentaries. The picture quality was unlike any that was seen before in order to capture the immense detail in every facet of the natural life on Earth. Then, Nolan had taken to using it for his blockbuster sequel, The Dark Knight, and crews of camera operators and projectionists would have to learn to utilize the practice for general audience movies.
The format has since taken off and has become a more luxurious and immersive way to watch a movie. This is especially if the film were a special effects-laden narrative that aims to take you on a journey onto a bigger plane. The practice has become more and more common in Hollywood with their big movies,...

Following the global success of Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two, Imax is looking forward to its biggest ever “filmed for Imax” slate in 2025, including at least 14 titles currently shooting with Imax film or Imax-certified digital cameras, which are due for release next year.
The company said today that the 2025 slate more than doubles any previous year in its history, as Hollywood and overseas filmmakers and studios increasingly create for its platform. (Scroll down for the full 2025 roster.)
The increase in Imax-focused production follows a run of historic box office success for films shot with its proprietary cameras despite its nearly 1,700 commercial locations accounting for less than 1% of total screens worldwide.
Recent highlights include over 20% of the global box office ($190M+) on Universal’s Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan shot the Oscar winner entirely with Imax film cameras. It’s the fifth highest grossing Imax movie of all time.

One Cannes ritual is IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond’s annual press lunch. IMAX is thriving in the global marketplace, with more than 1,700 screens in 90 countries, as audiences continue to recognize and embrace the global brand for giant film and digital cameras and big-screen formats. Helfand announced the company’s upcoming 2025 filmed for IMAX slate (below) while at Cannes, which he believes will break records for the company. Thanks to IMAX believer Chris Nolan‘s global blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” IMAX performed at peak capacity with over $1 billion in revenue in 2023, matching the company’s 2019 pre-pandemic record.
IMAX delivered 20% of the global box office for “Oppenheimer” — shot entirely with IMAX film cameras — and more than $190 million worldwide, making it the fifth highest grossing IMAX film of all time. IMAX also delivered 21% of the global box office for “Dune: Part Two” — shot entirely with IMAX-certified digital cameras — and over $145 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest.

Imax is going big for 2025, unveiling on Thursday that it will release at least 14 titles in its “filmed for Imax” slate, features shot on Imax film or Imax-certified cameras, more than double that of any previous year.
Among the highlights going out on the wide-screen format will be Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World, The Fantastic Four, and Tron: Ares; Warner Bros.’ still-untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan feature and its DC release Superman; Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 8; and Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon. (See full slate with release dates below).
Earlier, Imax said that Francis Ford Coppola’s Cannes entry Megalopolis would get a global Imax release.
Imax is coming off the success of 2023 wide-screen releases such as Oppenheimer — which generated more than $190 million worldwide, some 20 percent of its overall gross, on Imax screens — and Dune: Part 2 (21 percent, $145 million). Oppenheimer was the fifth-highest-grossing Imax film of all time.

It’d be fair to say that critically panned movies are not rare guests of the platforms’ charts at all. On the contrary, sometimes it’s a pleasure to switch off your brain and to dive into a simple, yet somewhat stupid onscreen story to have an evening chill.
The 2023 action flick that is now holding the 6th place in Netflix’s global top fully proves this tendency. Its shameful rating of a rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes didn’t manage to scare off the audience, as lots of people around the world have recently watched it.
The movie’s plot revolves around Michelle, an ex-military doctor during her usual working day at the city’s hospital. As it often happens in the genre’s staples, she ends up involved in a showdown where she doesn’t belong - the one of the powerful mafiosos.

Treasures from the archives of the late Suicide frontman Alan Vega and his widow, Liz Lamere, will come out in the year ahead. The first will be a solo album, Insurrection, that Vega recorded in the late Nineties, and its latest single, “Cyanide Soul,” sounds as unsettling as Suicide’s Seventies recordings. A mechanical rhythm propels its way through Vega’s and Lamere’s icy, synthy atmospheres as Vega whispers in a menacing way about cyanide. It’s just as eerie as “Mercy,” the first track to be released from Insurrection,...

The X-Men have finally come back home to the MCU after the acquisition of Fox Studios by Disney. The characters will be making their official MCU debut with the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine, which sees Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and a whole bunch of other actors crossing over to the franchise.
The MCU has also reportedly begun work on making an X-Men film. An industry insider recently reported that the studio was looking for writers who could balance comedy and drama. The report also mentioned that the new films would focus more on the female mutants. While previous female-centered Marvel films have not worked for the franchise, it might just be the best foot forward with the X-Men.

As the upcoming Ryan Gosling–Emily Blunt crowd-pleaser “The Fall Guy” shows, doing stuntwork in Hollywood can be risky business. That is why you are supposed to leave it to the professionals.
But Chris Pratt decided to get in the mix a little bit during the production of his next film, “Mercy,” and the result didn’t go so well.
As he shared on Instagram, the “Jurassic World” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor, after saluting his stunt team, admitted he “sometimes tr[ies] to get in there and do some of my own stuff. Today, daddy caught a metal post to the ankle. Should be interesting moving forward.” He included the “thinky guy” emoji and two photos—one of a bandaged foot, the other looking a bit scratched and puffy. It’s unclear to what degree this injury will delay shooting.

Upon her introduction in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Isla Faust quickly became a fan-favourite character, but she sadly made her exit in last year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. During an episode of WrapWomen’s Unwrapped podcast, Rebecca Ferguson explained why the time was right to leave the Mission: Impossible franchise.
“To speak very clearly — because I know a lot of people are sad about it, I’m sad about it — I had filmed three films. My deal was done,” Ferguson explained. “And I love her beyond words. Beyond words. I think she’s the most awesome, fantastic character.“

When Rebecca Ferguson revealed earlier this year that she had to stand up to an “idiot” co-star after they belittled her in front of the cast and crew – ultimately telling this unknown star to “f off” – a frenzy began in trying to figure out who the mystery was. Sadly, her overall point was missed by many in the process.
As Rebecca Ferguson told Jess Cagle (via The Hollywood Reporter), “The point of the interview wasn’t about finding the person — of course, people will be interested. But I was excited about the question, which was a very good question…Because the point was: Is there a point in your career where you were treated in a way where you changed your decision on — this is how I formulated it in myself — where you want change, or you will not accept it? And it was such a clear moment for me working with this person.

Theater owners have been treated to their first glimpse of Amazon MGM Studios’ year-end holiday romp Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. While the studio didn’t give an official presentation at CinemaCon this week, it used the annual convention to show off 10 minutes of the comedy inside a spacious suite at Caesars Palace.
Those who saw the footage were asked to keep plot details under tight wraps, although its known that J.K. Simmons plays Santa and Bonnie Hunt plays Mrs. Claus.
Red One, from Dwayne Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions, is set to hit theaters worldwide Nov. 15, 2024, in order to take full advantage of the long year-end holiday corridor (several cinema operators told The Hollywood Reporter the footage looks promising). The holiday action comedy is based on an original story from Hiram Garcia, president of production at Seven Bucks Productions. Jake Kasdan directed from a script by Chris Morgan.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.
Let’s just say that Red One is a fire-breathing Christmas action movie that completely reinvents the holiday genre. There hasn’t been a mass appealing Christmas tentpole in six years, the last being Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch which made over a half billion worldwide. Red One is a really fun original action film for both Johnson and Evans, and...

Amazon MGM Studios executives have been screening privately a 10-minute sizzle reel of the upcoming Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans Christmas action adventure Red One and discussing the upcoming theatrical slate with exhibitors.
Red One was originally planned to launch on Prime Video and will now open theatrically on November 15. The tentpole, which Screen and other outlets were not allowed to write about in any detail after watching the reel, offers an indication of what the studio, led by head of film Courtenay Valenti and head of theatrical distribution Kevin Wilson, plans to assemble.

Starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, sci-fi thriller Mercy is taking shape, with Kali Reis and Rafi Gavron among the actors joining its cast.
For the past few months, Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov has quietly assembled what could end up being one of the starriest sci-fi films of 2025. In January, Amazon MGM bought up the global theatrical rights for Mercy – which is unsurprising, given the package: it has Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson attached as its stars, and Hollywood veteran Charles Roven as its producer.
In the weeks since, more and more names have been added, including Annabelle Wallis (who starred in the gleefully twisted Malignant) and Kali Reis, who made a strong impression in the hit series True Detective: Night County. Most recently, Deadline reports that four more actors have been added to the roster: Rafi Garon (A Star Is Born), Chris Sullivan (This Is Us), Kenneth Choi (9-...

John Cale has announced his 18th studio album, POPtical Illusion, arriving on June 14th via Double Six/Domino.
The announcement arrives just over a year after Cale’s last album, Mercy, which was his first solo album in seven years. For POPtical Illusion, the Welsh musician and composer has teamed up once again with regular collaborator Nita Scott, and centered his sound on a more hopeful attitude than Mercy. According to a press release, Cale is keeping his gaze toward the future on POPtical Illusion: “[Cale] foregoes the illustrious cast to burrow mostly alone into mazes of synthesizers and samples, organs and pianos, with words that, as far as Cale goes, constitute a sort of swirling hope, a sage insistence that change is yet possible.”
To preview POPtical Illusion, Cale has offered “How We See the Light,” and shared its stylized, Pepi Ginsberg-directed video. Over warm, syncopated piano stabs, Cale...
