Adequate amount of blood and guts...
paul_haakonsen27 September 2022
Well, I have to say that I was lured in by this 2022 horror movie's cover. Needless to say that I had never heard about the movie prior to watching it. But it being a horror movie was essentially all that was needed for me to sit down and watch it.

Writers and directors Jason Rader and Jason Von Godi put together a semi-adequate enough slasher script here. Sure, "The Hoot Owl" was watchable, but it wasn't a particularly outstanding horror movie. It suffered from being a low budget movie, but not managing to do what the 1982 "Evil Dead" did on its budget.

The storyline was adequate enough for a single viewing, and I doubt that I will ever be returning to watch "The Hoot Owl" a second time.

The acting in "The Hoot Owl" was as to be expected from a movie of this caliber, production and budget. And with that being said, don't get me wrong, because I've seen far worse acting performances, and even in bigger budget movies. But you know what you are in for here with a movie such as "The Hoot Owl". I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress here.

Something that definitely worked in favor of the movie was the gore, blood and special effects. Sure, "The Hoot Owl" is a low budget movie, but the special effects were actually good enough and gory enough to keep a gorehound like myself happy. And I will say that the blood and gore in "The Hoot Owl" actually makes it worthwhile watching the movie.

The movie's cover was rather interesting and alluring. But it was actually also the best part about the entire movie, sadly so.

My rating of "The Hoot Owl" lands on a three out of ten stars.

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this film for free on TUBI. After April (Augustine Frizzell) as a miscarriage, her husband Scott (Jason Skeen) buys a murder house where the killer(s) and the twins were never found. We did see an opening sequence from 15 years ago of a pregnant woman being pursued in the woods. April's floozy sister Susie (Katharine Franco) comes along as well as Scott's best friend Drew (J. D. Brown) who brings the party favors and hooks up with the sister. The Gibbon murder house needs some work so a couple of handy men show up to add to the kill total. They are being watched by a classic horror film "breather." Scott is a former punk rocker who now quotes Billy Joel. Susie snores like a "chainsaw" which doesn't work its way into the film.

The music during the killing scene was irritating. The dream scene was too long and the birth scene was disgusting and fake looking with a huge fake "V". It is a shame as I like the characters. I wish they did something with the ending.

Guide: F-word. Sex. Nudity (fake V, Augustine Frizzell or body double)

Very Disappointed

I would have like to learn more about what happened to the previous owners and what transpired to cause the murder why and what happened to the twins. Each of the characters back stories would have been nice as well. The acting wasn't as good I thought it could of been. I like grade B horror that's why I'm so disappointed. It would've been great to know if the twins were the people inhabiting the land what happened to the guy who went to get help what the baby looked like. What became of April and the baby. The effects were good but the movie was lacking any story or reason for any of what transpired.

No. Just no.

Warning: Spoilers
There is absolutely nothing in this movie for the first 53 minutes other than people doing what people do: moving to a new house, getting acquainted, partying, telling stories, and yes, finally fishing. Since the credits start rolling at 67 minutes, that leaves about the last 15 minutes of the movie for everything else including a large portion of blood and chasing, and yes - more blood. And since what's with the title "Hoot Owl". Since when does a guy running around in a cow skull look anything like an owl? Least, that's what it looked like to me. A more appropriate title should have been "How to kill off most of the cast in 15 minutes or less".

It's a B-movie that isnt scary for 1 second so I guess it is meant to be a parody? If not, then it is at least hilariously terrible.

NOT horror at all. More of a parody on horror. If it was ever meant to be a parody? Anyway, it is kinda funny, without wanting to be funny though. I guess...

The bad: this is not a full featured movie, because it lasts only about 1 hour. It has got the look and feel of an amateurishly homemade movie, produced by some enthousiasts who love horror who decided to try and make a horror movie by themselves and who are failing miserably at that attempt

But you gotta see this movie in good fun, because it cant be taken seriously. Have a laugh. There are even some gross bloody scenes with a pregnant lady at the end, but even these gross scenes are hilariously terrible.

Only recommended for those who want to have a laugh at an amateurishly made B-movie.

Utterly horrific(not in a good way)

The "acting" is beyond terrible, every character was truly unlikeable. Its like there was no script. I love a good bad horror film, but this is just a bad bad film. It takes 55mins for ANYTHING to happen, and the film is only 1hr 10 mins long, and that's 1hr 10mins too long.

The film hasn't a single redeeming quality. It's not a so bad it's funny film, it's a film that's trying to be serious, but the only thing it is, is seriously bad.

Normally with a film like this you have at least one half decent actor/actress, but somehow they have managed to find the 6 worst actors in the northern hemisphere. A truly remarkable achievement.

Dreadful Dreadful film by any standard.

All My Owls Say "Hoot MF Hoot MF uuuuuu!"

Some people hang around in a forest for no reason and then a hoot owl type person ( or so i assume) kills them. So... With a title like The Hoot Owl, what the hell were you expecting? The equivalence to The Godfather? The Empire Strikes Back? Oh! I'm so sorry it couldn't live up to those expectations. God! So..... Yes it is a tragedy but it was an entertainingly fun and happy tragedy. Great acting, great story, efficient and professionally directed.... every thing that The Hoot Owl is not. But if you watch this for the gore, then this will suffice. Particularly a scene where blood is gushing out a man's lady parts trying to birth a kid in graphic like fashion. Yummers! Anyways, I enjoyed this despite being a volcanic cesspool.

Beyond Awful

An hour and 10 minutes I will mourn the loss of for a long time after sitting through this absolute trash of a thing that doesn't have anything at all to redeem it The acting is atrocious ,storyline is atrocious and the cinematography is atrocious, the best thing about this is the end credits knowing I will never see it again let alone hear it, even the soundtrack is atrocious.

Please, please, please IMDB let us have minus ratings even if there aren't enough minus numbers to rate this creation from the mind of a complete and utter simpleton who should never, ever be allowed to write another word in their entire life.
