"Out of Darkness" is a British 12-minute live action from 2013, so this one has its 5th anniversary now. Writer and director is actress Manjinder Virk and this is one of her rare filmmaking efforts. With Riz Ahmed and Tom Hiddleston in the cast, it is no surprise that this one even received a solid amount of awards recognition. It is in black and white and has several actors tell mostly depressing material in a most essential film where we just have an actor's face look at the camera and tell a story. Sadly, the outcome, maybe because of the contents, to a lesser degree because of the delivery, is not too great in my opinion. One problem I had early on that when so many people are talking about their/"my mother", then it just lacks the personal connection between the story-tellers and the people they talk about as it is very close family. Maybe that is just subjective I don't know, but I think while I frequently like films with simple concepts if they are executed with quality, this one here just did not cut the cake. If you really love Hiddleston, Ahmed or any other of the lesser known castmembers, then you can check it out. with this running time, you are not doing too much wrong of course. But I give it a thumbs-down as it did not turn out as touching, memorable or just as good as I hoped it would be and maybe it is better for Virk to focus on acting. By the way, you get to see her in here as well in front of the screen.
