It’s Halloween time, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that you’ve heard some Edgar Allan Poe verse in the past few weeks. “The Raven,” most likely. If you had been alive during the time when Poe was still living, your chances of hearing “Once upon a midnight dreary…” would have been just as good.
“‘The Raven’ was a massive hit. [Poe] was a huge celebrity during the time ‘The Raven.’ Everybody knew ‘The Raven.’ People did parodies of ‘The Raven.’ Kids memorized it in school,” actor and literary superfan Denis O’Hare explained in a recent interview
In Eric Stange’s new PBS film “Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive,” O’Hare plays Poe in surreal, reimagined moments, performing the writers’ work to empty rooms and slinking through the streets of Poe’s eventual home city of Baltimore under cover of darkness.

It’s kind of hard for me to undersell the impact Batman and Adam West had on me as a boy. I was six years old when the show premiered, and it was the first program I can remember seeing previews for and *begging* my mom to commit to letting me watch it when it finally came on. Like most every boy my age in the mid ’60s, I had a makeshift costume, a lunchbox, a plastic Batmobile, the Batman TV soundtrack (I still own the original LP), and of course the comic books, which never seemed quite as captivating to me compared to the vivid pop-art energy of the series. And hardly least of all, Batman introduced Julie Newmar’s Catwoman to me, who in turn introduced a whole other set of feelings to this six-year-old– fear and sex all rolled up into one inexplicable but ooh-la-la! package. (I’ll spare you,...

His illustrations may have caused you to dread the next full moon, avoid the swamp on your shortcut home, or ignite your imagination with a peek into the post-apocalypse. Through his artwork, Bernie Wrightson has influenced and inspired generations of horror fans, so it is with great sadness that we inform readers that the prolific artist has passed away at the age of 68 after a long battle with brain cancer.
Wrightson's wife, Liz, shared the somber news of her husband's passing earlier today on the artist's official website and Facebook page.
A fan of EC Comics growing up, Bernie Wrightson, aka "Berni," began working on projects for both DC and Marvel early in his career, co-creating the complex character Swamp Thing with writer Len Wein in the early ’70s. Bernie later worked for Warren Publishing, where he helped bring H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe stories to life on the paneled page.

Simon Pegg is to head up a starry horror comedy about Mary Shelley, Lovecraft, Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe...
Horror legend Jeffrey Combs is well known for his collaborations with director Stuart Gordon, which resulted in such wildly entertaining films as Re-Animator, From Beyond and The Pit And The Pendulum.
Combs is set to star in The Gathering, which sounds like the kind of film he'd make with Gordon. In it, Combs will play Edgar Allan Poe - a role he's inhabited twice for Gordon, first in TV's The Masters Of Horror: The Black Cat, and a second time in a stage production called Nevermore.
The Gathering will be directed by Jon Keeyes, whose previous films include Phobia (2013) and Fall Down Dead (2007). Essentially an anthology film, the premise behind The Gathering is quite ingenious: the Devil (who'll be played by Simon Pegg) gathers together a group of famous...

It has just been announced that Re-Animator: The Musical will return for new performances in Hollywood this October with new performers and brand new songs:
““Re-Animator ™ the Musical” tells the story of Herbert West, a brilliant young medical student who has created a glowing green serum that can bring the dead back to life. What should be a medical breakthrough results in hideous monstrosities and ghastly consequences. “I guess he just wasn’t fresh enough,” is West’s constant refrain in his quest for fresh subjects. Graham Skipper, who won a Best New Performer Award at the New York Musical Theater Festival for his crowd-pleasing turn, returns as the demented young genius.
And operatic Jesse Merlin is back as Dr. Carl Hill who loses his head for Meg, the dean’s beautiful daughter, only to actually lose it at the hands of Herbert West. But thanks to the glowing re-agent,...

If you're in New England and have never seen Jeffrey Combs perform Nevermore: An Evening With Edgar Allan Poe, then clear your calendar for Halloween night because he'll be doing just that at the Somerville Theatre right outside of Boston.
And the play's not the only thing happening that week. The day before, on October 30th, the Edgar Allan Poe Bronze Bust Project will be unveiled at the Boston Public Library. In fact, it's Bryan Moore, the Poe bust sculptor, and Boston-based filmmaker Izzy Lee who are bringing Dennis Paoli’s play to town.
Starring beloved character actor Combs, the one-act play is set in 1848—one year after the death of Poe's wife and muse, Virginia, and two years before his own death—and begins and ends with the lighting and extinguishing of a candle. Combs inhabits Poe’s persona seemingly as easily as he breathes—and runs...

Interview
Re-Animator landed like a firecracker in the middle of 80s horror cinema. A wild, vibrant adaptation of the Hp Lovecraft tale, Herbert West-Reanimator, it was both extremely funny and remarkably close to the writer’s source text. Jeffrey Combs plays the darting-eyed Herbert West, a gifted yet utterly mad young medical student who invents a serum which brings the dead back to kicking, screaming life.
A sprightly Bruce Abbott and Barbara Crampton play his fellow students, who can only watch in horror as their Miskatonic University campus fills up with angry revenant corpses from the morgue, while David Gale is brilliantly glowering as Dr Hill, West’s nemesis.
With glowing reviews from mainstream critics, Re-Animator quickly became a cult favourite, establishing Stuart Gordon’s reputation as a talented genre director.

Director Stuart Gordon has worked with actor Jeffrey Combs since his first feature film, Re-Animator, in 1985. Since then, they have worked on nearly a dozen projects, many of them adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe stories. Their newest collaboration isn’t all that new: Nevermore. Based on the personal letters and journals of Poe, “Nevermore” started as a one-man stage play, directed by Gordon and starring Combs as Poe. Three years later, the pair want to turn the play into a film. We spoke with Stuart Gordon about his plans for the film adaptation.
First tell us a little bit about “Nevermore” and how you started with the play?
In 2007 Jeffrey Combs played Poe for the first time in “The Black Cat,” an episode of the Masters of Horror series on Showtime. He was so amazing that we decided to create “Nevermore,” a one-man stage show for the bicentennial of Poe’s birth.

Daily Dead recently caught up with iconic horror filmmaker Stuart Gordon to discuss his plans for the Nevermore feature film adaptation, based on his hugely successful one-man play of the same name that starred Jeffrey Combs as Edgar Allan Poe.
A blending of fact and Poe’s fictional tales, Nevermore is Gordon’s exploration of the last days of Poe which have been shrouded in mystery ever since his death in 1849. During our recent chat with the Master of Horror, he talked about why he chose Kickstarter to fund the feature version and how the industry has changed for filmmakers who are looking to create original stories. Gordon also discussed his thoughts on other Poe adaptations, how Combs has perfectly embodied Poe over the years and more.

We first told you about Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs' plans to bring their phenomenal Edgar Allan Poe stage play Nevermore to the big screen a while back, but now the two titans are hoping to see their project become a reality through a Kickstarter campaign.
According to the campaign page: Nevermore is set in 1848, a year after the death of Poe's beloved wife, Virginia (and a year before his own). He had become internationally famous as the author of The Raven and his Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. But his fame did not provide fortune, and so he was constantly seeking financial security and respect from the literary establishment.
This is Poe in his own words. Our text is taken from his letters and essays, and we have based our evening on reviews and reports of his actual appearances. Our goal is to present a sense...

New comic book Wednesday has come and gone. The dust at your local comic shop has settled. An eerie silence descends as you finish reading your last superhero book of the week. Now it's time for something a little more sinister. Welcome to Bagged and Boarded: comic reviews of the sick, spooky, twisted and terrifying! B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth No. 112 This issue we get more background and story on the psychic named Fenix. She was once able to control fire, and may be able to still or may have lost that power forever. We see her struggle with the loss of her abilities while Johann Krauss makes plans and gets leads on this whole end of the world business. In the end, this is just another few small steps towards a long, wild story. Bag it or board it up? I love this series, but this issue is definitely "for fans only.

Last night, I co-hosted my 10th Dead Right Horror Trivia Night at the Jumpcut Cafe in Studio City, California with Fangoria's Rebekah McKendry and it was our biggest event of the year.
It's October and, naturally, we had to pull out all of the stops. In addition to telling teams that costumes were mandatory, we stacked on some bonus rounds, some truly killer prizes...and asked Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child's Play) and Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond) to come on down and co-host some rounds! Appropriately enough, Holland dished some questions from Fright Night. Gordon, meanwhile, tackled some Edgar Allan Poe trivia and stumped for his Nevermore Kickstarter.
Regulars of the monthly trivia night event know that Friday the 13th Part 3's Larry Zerner is a fixture and he turned up last night dressed as Jason Voorhees while his teammates played the ill-fated "Shelly."

Shudder in fear at this week's horror-themed crowdfunding projects, which includes a new film from Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon...
The nights are drawing in, and we've packed away our flip-flops and inflatable dolphins for another year. And as the autumn approaches, it's only right that we light a few candles, dust off our Mr James collections, and begin to consider the chillier, supernatural side of geek culture.
That's our excuse for this week's collection of crowdfunding curiosities, which includes a film project from a true master of the horror genre, and three other film and web series campaigns, which all have ideas to alternately provoke laughter and shivers of fear...
Nevermore
For many of us, Stuart Gordon will need no introduction. The director whose febrile genius brought such classic films as Re-Animator, From Beyond and Fortress to life, his work is distinguished by its gruesome gore and jet-black comedy.

Stuart Gordon has brought us some great B-movies. Re-Animator, Dolls, From Beyond and, even more recently, Stuck. My first year at Fantastic Fest was 2010 and it was the year that Gordon brought Jeffrey Combs and not only did they show Re-Animator and From Beyond, they also did the stage version of Nevermore. It was something I thought I would never see since it only seemed to be performed in Los Angeles. Last year, I talked to Combs at Con-tamination and asked if they were ever planning on doing a full tour of the play. Combs stated that he and Stuart really wanted to make a feature film out of it instead. He then told me, after signing my Mondo Nevermore poster that I bought at Fantastic Fest, that Gordon was probably going to launch something on Kickstarter to pull it off. After over a year’s wait, it looks like they are going forward.

Although I have not had the honor of seeing it for myself it is pretty well known fact that one of the must see events to have happened in actor Jeffery Combs career was playing Edgar Allen Poe in a one man stage show titled Nevermore.
