My biggest fear as a child was that my mother would die. Yes, you might think––yours and everyone else’s. My fear, however, stemmed from something that seemed contradictory: I was afraid she would be murdered for doing good. When I was a child my mother started her work as a human-rights activist, spending her life empowering people who live on the margins of society and fighting injustice. She’s badass. But in a country like Honduras, where I was born and raised, women like her end up dead.
I am incredibly proud of her now that I’m an adult, but when I was little I didn’t understand why being part of a hunger strike was more important than being home, or why she had to go on trips to places everybody knew were dangerous. Did she not value her life? Every time my mom was on...

In the biographical documentary “Igualada,” the space between the presidential candidate Francia Márquez and the underrepresented Colombians she inspires is often electric with hope, yearning and recognition. Her 2021 campaign and movement motto, reflective of her African roots — “I Am Because We Are” — struck a chord with its deep humility and humanity. The image of a Black woman in a crowd listening raptly, her eyes brimming, comes as confirmation. But the activist turned presidential hopeful inspired anger. When she takes to a podium during a campaign stop, she stands behind the bulletproof shields of a police detail. The gathered can barely see her as she addresses them.
Director Juan Mejia Botero’s documentary, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, is rousing and intimate, making for an often moving, sometimes nerve-wracking ride. It’s those very qualities that also nudge occasional moments of very gentle skepticism: Is this really what the candidate is like?...

Francia Márquez is the current Vice President of Colombia, and Juan Mejía Botero was fortunate to have documented the campaign exclusively and from the beginning. That footage, alongside archival footage of a younger Márquez, makes up the Sundance 2024 documentary Igualada. Ahead of the film’s premiere, cinematographer Gómez Karen Gómez (Sous le silence et la terre) talked about what it was like documenting a campaign that was constantly in motion. "We are the descendants of free men and women who were enslaved." Human Pictures has revealed a first look festival trailer for a documentary film titled Igualada, premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival kicking off this week in Utah. One highly anticipated world cinema doc film showing at Sundance this year. Black Colombian activist Francia Márquez transforms a derogatory term, "Igualada," into a symbol of rights defiance. Her presidential campaign inspires the entire nation, challenging societal norms. In one of Latin America’s most unequal countries, Márquez, a Black Colombian rural activist, challenges the status quo with a presidential campaign that reappropriates the term "Igualada" — someone who acts as if they deserve rights that supposedly don't correspond to them — and inspires a nation to dream. This looks like a rousing and inspiring story of just how hard it is to fight against incredible oppression, another fascinating tale of tenacity & ambition.

The United States is approaching an incredibly important election this November, and it seems as if our choices for President are going to come down to two incredibly old, wealthy white men. For the most part, that’s been our choice since the country was founded more than two centuries ago. But the upcoming Sundance documentary, “Igualada,” aims to show that grassroots campaigns can lead to real change and upend the political norms.
