Fans worldwide have fallen in love with Patrick Dempsey on "Grey's Anatomy." But he has another passion in racing. In fact, he may be more passionate about racing than acting. The new, four-part documentary series "Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans" chronicles the actor as he prepares for the biggest race of his life: a 24-hour endurance race in Le Mans, France.
While his success on "Grey's" has allowed him to pursue his passion for racing, it was always racing for Dempsey. "My life really started once I started racing. Acting, I’ve never felt comfortable," he admitted. "I never felt like I belonged in the acting community ... With the car, it’s very clear cut. Hollywood is not clear cut, it doesn’t make any sense.”
He admitted that he's kind of disillusioned with acting, though he doesn't downplay the significance of "Grey's Anatomy" in his life. He admits that...

Patrick Dempsey has earned himself quite a bit of goodwill playing Dr. Derek Shepherd on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" for the past nine seasons. It was an image rejuvenation, jump-starting the actor's career that had mostly laid dormant since the early '90s -- an actor's dream. And that's what makes "Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans" feel so unseemly.
The new docu-series, premiering concurrently on Velocity and Discovery on Wednesday (Aug. 28), follows Dempsey on his quest to race cars in the illustrious Le Mans. The premiere chronicles the many obstacles Dempsey faces on his way, while also illustrating his love of the sport. It begs the audience to sympathize with the actor -- a near impossible feat.
At one point in the hour, Dempsey says to the camera, "Do I love acting? I don't know anymore." While it's certainly understandable that one might fall out of love with their career, it's...

Patrick Dempsey still hasn't decided whether he'll stay with "Grey's Anatomy" past Season 10 or leave like co-star Sandra Oh, who will wrap her decade-long run on the ABC drama in the upcoming season.
On a visit to "The Late Show," David Letterman asked the star how much longer he'll remain on the hit medical series. "I think it depends on renegotiations, quite honestly," Dempsey admitted in the video above. "I could stay, I may go, who knows?"
It's not the first time Dempsey has considered leaving "Grey's" -- the actor was weighing his options back in Season 8 after his previous contract expired. "I have a family to support, and why not have a discussion about continuing?" he told TV Guide. "The question is will I do a full season, a half season or come back at all?"

Discovery Communications has promoted Robert Scanlon to general manager of Velocity network. Since October of 2011, Scanlon has been Svp at the network, which made news recently when Patrick Dempsey, star of its four-part miniseries Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans, told the press at TCA Summer TV Press Tour 2013 that acting — the thing he does on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy — is that which he does in order to finance his real love, which is race car driving. From today’s announcement: Previously, Scanlon served as vice president in the Discovery Communications Emerging Networks Group, where his responsibilities included program development and production for Military Channel and HD Theater. Prior to joining Discovery, he was recruited by the NFL to manage the creation and launch of the NFL Network. Bad news for ABC — better news maybe for Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey: Sandra Oh has announced she’s leaving Grey’s Anatomy at the end of the ABC drama’s upcoming 10th season. “It’s been a great privilege to play the character of Cristina Yang on Ga and I am both sad and excited to see where this, her final season will take her,” Oh said in this afternoon’s statement, calling it an emotional and “deeply creative decision” to leave. Pompeo and Dempsey’s contracts also are up at the end of the coming season, and ABC presumably won’t want any more of the series majors to exit. That’s always a good bargaining position. Dempsey made news the recent Summer TCA Press Tour, when he told a ballroom full of press — while promoting a car-racing show for Velocity network called Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans...

Relax, "Grey's Anatomy" fans -- the ABC medical drama isn't going anywhere.
"We would like to see it on our network for many years," ABC president Paul Lee said at the Television Critics Association Summer 2013 press tour on Sunday.
"Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey recently indicated he may be weary of his role on the drama, saying in promotional material for his new racing miniseries "Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans" that "Grey's" has "the same storyline over and over."
Dempsey later clarified his remarks and though he didn't necessary say he would be leaving "Grey's," the actor told HuffPost TV that he "would race full-time if [he] could right now."
Whatever happens to McDreamy in the future, Lee said that he thinks "Grey's" will "go on for many, many years to come," despite the fact that ratings for the show, which is now entering its tenth season, have dropped off.

Patrick Dempsey made a few waves at the Television Critics Association Summer 2013 press tour, talking about acting on "Grey's Anatomy" ("I'm an actor so that's my profession, my job") versus his real passion: racing cars ("I'm grateful I have the gig, but it's not the same as being in a race car"). But hear him out.
Dempsey is continuing a tradition of Hollywood leading men with a need for speed, from Steve McQueen to James Garner to Paul Newman. But he makes more headlines for his chosen second career because of the expense and competitiveness of the sport now, and his very high-profile other career on one of ABC's longest-running hit shows.
I caught up with Dempsey after his choice words during the panel to find out if he had any backpeddling to do, and to let him clarify exactly how much he appreciates the "Grey's" fans ... especially since, again,...

Patrick Dempsey is looking beyond "Grey's Anatomy" for his thrills these days. Dempsey was on hand at the Television Critics Assn. Press Tour to discuss his upcoming TLC series "Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans," which centers on his quest to compete in the legendary 24-hour car race. He admitted that, while he's "not necessarily bored with" the long-running ABC drama, after nine seasons, acting is a "job" -- and "not a lot of homework" goes into his portrayal of Dr. Derek Shepherd. Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TCA coverage. Patrick Dempsey admitted this morning that working as an actor in a long-running series like ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy can’t hold a candle to the excitement of being a race car driver. Dempsey was at TCA to promote the testosterone-encrusted Velocity network’s documentary miniseries Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans, which depicts the actor training for and competing in the famed 24-hour race. It premieres August 28. He made it clear during the session that, as Grey‘s comes up on 10 years and 200 episodes, it gets tougher and tougher to motivate himself on the set. “Work on a TV show doesn’t change,” Dempsey said. “In a race, it changes constantly, every lap, every corner, every moment of that day. And that’s very exciting. And it keeps me alive. And then I can go back to work and enjoy it.
