An interesting idea and a detailed IMDb page brought me to this short film. A group of those with various issues and insecurities are brought together in a deserted building in the middle of nowhere. The proposition is clear –England is at risk and the Government needs their help against an as-yet-unknown enemy. The oddest group of superheroes weigh up their options
The basic plot summary sounds interesting, and indeed as it starts up there are aspects which are okay, but unfortunately they are in the minority. The various characters are introduced and few of them are likable – or rather most of them are hard to like or be interested in; a bit of a problem if setting your film in a fixed location and driven by this group of characters. I had worried that the word "nutters" in the tagline may have meant this would be offensively simply, however it is not really developed enough to be that way. The characters are drawn and performed in such an one-note manner that it is hard to really care too much for any of them. The dialogue doesn't cover for this and at several points I struggled to know what the film thought it was doing as some longer periods really did nothing – not entertain, not develop, just take up space.
However – we have effects. At first they are just a few little things, but gradually across the film the special effects and style become more prevalent, and this made me realize why we are here – we are here for the effects. Given the limited resources of the film, the effects are indeed impressive, however they are not so impressive that one forgets the rather dull 11 minutes which we have to get through just to occasionally see them. The cast deliver their simple characters with little help from the script, mostly being okay in their limited scope but unable to do more.
It is an odd short film; the concept sounded like it would be interesting, while the closed location offered a good chance for dialogue with the colorful characters, but sadly nothing really comes of it.
