Magical encounter between Gardel & Sinatra
karinainsausti-4671620 August 2023
This is a emotional story of a magical encounter between two of America's greatest singers. Beautiful performances and interpretations of tangos reversioned to Sinatra style, that surprises.

I found it tender, emotional, the changes from the dressing room to other scenes with just the right time, the lighting, the setting of the choirs, exquisite.

Oscar Lajad plays Gardel with a heartfelt performance with characteristic twists of the time and sings as if Carlitos himself had taught him.

Pablo Turturiello, the young man who plays Frank seems like a find to me, he is tender and relaxed and he grows during the story.

Each one is in character of him playing very well.

Entertaining and nostalgic. Very enjoyable!!!

An endearing encounter

When Frank met Carlitos, the musical that has just been uploaded to Disney Plus is a more than pleasant surprise.

Based on the urban legend that supposes a meeting between Carlos Gardel and Frank Sinatra in NYC around 1934, the musical is a magnificent excuse to listen to Gardel's best tangos, impeccably sung in Spanish and English, and at the same time, journeys through themes that are very close to the Buenos Aires soul, such as women, the neighborhood, friendship, gambling and many more.

The show is very emotional but also offers many moments of humor thanks to a cleverly written book by Raúl López Rossi and Gustavo González, also producers of this special.

Oscar Lajad and Pablo Turturiello, as Carlitos and Frank, do an extraordinary job as well as Antonella Misenti, playing Nancy Barbato, the young Sinatra's girlfriend and later first wife.

All items are carefully executed (scenography, costumes, cinematography) as well as the musical arrangements by Nico Posse, which give a new shine to world-renowned themes.

In short, When Frank Met Carlitos is a little gem worth discovering.

Wonderful

This is a wonderful musical, not only for tango lovers but for those who enjoy good music.

It tells the story of the alleged meeting between a succesful Carlos Gardel and a young and still unknown Francesco Sinatra.

According to an anecdote that has been going around the Internet for several years, in 1934 Gardel was performing on NBC in New York when he was introduced to a young admirer who was eager to meet him. As it turns out, he was none other than 19-year-old Frank Sinatra. Nobody is certain about whether that meeting happened or not but rumor has it that during the night, Gardel and Sinatra were locked in a dressing room together.

Ok..but

The story itself is interesting. But, they needed to put English subtitles when Carlitos is speaking. They only use Spanish subtitles when Sinatra is speaking or singing. If the thought was to have the non Spanish speaking audience view it from Sinatra being unable to understand Spanish it was poorly done, as he seemed to fully understand what was being said or sung in Spanish.

Even when Sinatra's girlfriend comes in, she also seems to understand Spanish.

I think you were supposed to see life lessons being given to Sinatra by Carlitos, but it was hard to understand this with no English subtitles.

Not knowing what I was getting into, I started watching "When Frank Met Carlitos" on Disney Plus.

I had no idea what I was going to find: it turns out that it is a musical that tells of the meeting between the famous Argentine singer Carlos Gardel and the even more famous American singer Frank Sinatra.

The meeting is based on a legend, but the musical recreates it with so much magic, emotion and humor that it makes you want it to have really happened.

All most famous tangos are included as Caminito, Volver, Por una cabeza, La cumparsita, Cambalache, Chorra, Yira Yira, Soledad, Leguisamo solo!

Highly recommended.
