Suction Heroes
This game is one of my favorites in the "Contained Action Platformer" sub-genre. I remember playing this game at the "Auburn Family Fun Center" (when it was still around) when I was about ten, I really loved it and as an adult I still do.
It's true the format and premise of the game is nothing new, it doesn't reinvent the wheel by any means but it's the execution that matters.
I really like the graphical presentation, which is colorful and well detailed, it has that look and feel of a 90's cartoon, which helps in giving the game a fun atmosphere to it. Like the look of the characters that are kind of like the two brothers from the arcade game "Buster Bros" (which is a story for another time) however I really like the outfits they have which are sort of a rough Blue-Collar style with the vest and bandana hat. I really like the blue collar look which I don't see enough of in video games, it just helps make the characters easier to emphasize with and that good message on anyone being a hero.
But I also like the design of the subordinate badies as it's just a colorful and crazy roster, but each fit the theme of their locations, from killer clowns, invisible men, yetis, killer snowmen, cavemen, and many more you just must see for yourself to believe. However, I really like the backgrounds and the contained arenas your in which each are based on the global location you go to, each of them always look and feel different which just motivated me to play some more as I wanted to see those other locations. The music is good and fits the game, there aren't any favs of mine (not all make it on my list, that's just me) but there still a good listen as there are a few in a level or two that stand out.
What really makes the game stand out is in it's gameplay, main in the use of the vacuum cleaner weapon. I really like that you use a non cliche weapon in the game, who'd of though a vacuum cleaner would be an effective weapon. It sort of predates the "Luigi's Mansion" franchise as that Luigi's signature weapon.
This weapon has a risk reward factor attached to it; well ok almost every video game has this but as I said before it's in the execution that makes it stand out. You can suck up one nasty and use then like a projectile by spiting them onto one of their nasty buddies. However, the real fun is in sucking up as much as possible and depending on how many baddies are contained you shoot them out creating a giant snowball of death and with this you sort of play billiards as the ball depending on how big it is continuing to roll and maintain momentum taking out any to all targets within its pathway.
Of course, there is a catch, as you keep your finger on the suction button and have sucked up one or more guys you build up pressure in your vac pack in your long containment of the badies. If you don't spit them all out before the time runs out then the vac pack explodes and you lose a life. So, don't waste time and work fast.
The boss battles are solid if on the easy side but I still like them for how colorful and different they are. Their pretty daft onto themselves but each of them retain the theme of the level, from a dragon made of fire that breathes fire, a floating clown, a giant snowman, really like the expressions of pain they have every time you deliver punishment.
You even have some power ups along the way, from an item that can increase your Vac power which gives it a longer range and can entrap more badies. Though one favorite of mine is having a ray gun which makes you unstoppable as you just simply zap any to all enemies within your path, but this doesn't last as it you only have it in the stage you get it from and survive that stage in general, which makes sense to keep things fair so enjoy the ray gun while it lasts and make each shot count.
"Tumble Pop" is a vintage classic worth getting sucked into.
Rating: 4 stars.
