"At the height of his career and powers, Japan's master fixer, who has guided politicians and business heads through some of Japan's biggest scandals, discovers that fixing his family is harder than fixing a country."
I have watched six episodes so far and saying that the show is moving very slowly would be an understatement.
When you expect a suspenseful thriller about a dark figure moving (or fixing) the political landscape in Japan from the shadows, you are kinda in the wrong place.
Though the "fixer" has indeed moved Japan from behind the scenes, but he is not an evil character (he is not totally good either). There are some subplots with people conspiring against him to take him down, but that is almost just a sideshow.
After decades of "fixing Japan" he realizes he has no real connection with his children and grandchildren and wants to make up for it, and even wants to leave his "occupation" for good - only one issue remains to be solved.
So when people conspire against him to take him down it is actually quite useless because he wants to quit anyway.
The show mainly focusses (so far anyway) on his attempts to reconnect with his family. It also shows the lifes of his children and grandchildren in detail. None of them though is a bad apple. They all lead quite normal (well almost normal anyway) lives.
There is not much happening in each episode, there are no cliffhangers to make you watch the next episode and so far there has not happened a big plot point event carrying the show dramtically forward.
And yet.......
It is a beautiful and sometimes touching show about ordinary people having a distant father with a very unusual occupation, trying to reconnect with them
As in many Japanese TV series. The actors and the acting are top-notch, the cinmatography is just beautiful, and although you might think it is a dull show it actually is not.
There is never a dull moment in that show, it always keeps interested (very subtly at that) and you always want to know what will happen to this unusual family.
I highly recommend it and it is best watched in Japanese with subtitles.
