2000 Ad has become a British institution since its launch in 1977, bringing characters to the world including Nemesis the Warlock, Rogue Trooper, Nikolai Dante and, of course, the one-and-only Judge Dredd.
Future Shock! The Story of 2000 Ad is a documentary that takes in the highs (and lows) of the comic's history, with interviews with Pat Mills, Kevin O'Neill, Andy Diggle, Karen Berger, Dave Gibbons, Lauren Beukes, Leah Moore and many more.
Ahead of the film's premiere as part of BFI's Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder season, we spoke to director Paul Goodwin, producer Sean Hogan and executive producer Nick Harwood about the past and future of 2000 Ad, Alan Moore and taking dinner with Pat Mills:
What made you decide to tell the story of 2000 Ad?
Sean: "We were at college together. After that, we went our separate ways. We'd always spoken about doing something one day. And we were...

A wonderfully exhaustive documentary, Future Shock! The Story of 2000Ad argues pointedly that the British comic book deserves more recognition for its influence on modern popular culture. Far better known in its native land than in the rest of the world, 2000Ad has spawned an amazing assortment of creative talent, an array of writers and artists that includes Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Neil Gaiman, yet it began in 1977 as a step back for Pat Mills (pictured below), the creator and first editor. His previous book, Action, had been banned in Britain for its 'extreme' content, and so he was forced to retrench by pushing all new stories into the future. There’s the world premiere of "Future Shock! A trailer has been released for Future Shock! The Story of 2000 Ad.
Director Paul Goodwin's documentary charts the history of the long-running UK anthology.
Watch the trailer below (Warning: Contains explicit language):
The trailer features interviewees including Pat Mills, legendary Vertigo editor Karen Berger, Neil Gaiman, Dave Gibbons and Grant Morrison.
"2000 Ad is the comic that people don't know they like," said Goodwin.
"Its pop cultural influence is massive - it's been referenced, homaged and outright ripped off in everything from other comics to films to television to music - and yet too many people are unaware of it.
"So many of us owe a debt to 2000 Ad - both as fans and creators - and Future Shock! is our attempt to acknowledge that."
Future Shock! The Story of 2000 Ad is yet to announce its release details.
