- [Patrick asks to shake Daryl's hand]
- Patrick: Mr. Dixon, I just wanted to thank you for bringing that deer back yesterday. It was a real treat, sir. And I'd be honored to shake your hand.
- [Patrick holds his hand out as Daryl licks his own fingers clean before shaking Patrick's hand back]
- [Daryl sees Carol cooking up the deer he caught]
- Daryl Dixon: Smells good.
- Carol Peletier: [Carol smiles] Just so you know, I liked you first.
- Daryl Dixon: Stop.
- [Carl and Lizzie disagree about the Walkers having names]
- Carl Grimes: You're naming them?
- Mika Samuels: Well, one of them has a name tag, so we thought all of them should.
- Carl Grimes: They had names when they were alive. They're dead now.
- Lizzie Samuels: No, they're not. They're just different.
- Carl Grimes: What the hell are you talking about? Okay, they don't talk. They don't think. They eat people. They kill people.
- Lizzie Samuels: People kill people. They still have names.
- Carl Grimes: Have you seen what happens? Have you seen someone die like that?
- Lizzie Samuels: Yeah, I have.
- Carl Grimes: They're not people and they're not pets. Don't name them.
- [Maggie tells Glenn that she isn't pregnant]
- Maggie Greene: I'm not pregnant.
- Glenn Rhee: You know?
- Maggie Greene: I know.
- Glenn Rhee: [Glenn gasps] Oh, thank God.
- Maggie Greene: Yeah.
- Glenn Rhee: Oh, my God.
- Maggie Greene: I didn't want to, but we could have. We can have lives here.
- Glenn Rhee: How can you say that after today? After Lori?
- Maggie Greene: Because I don't want to be afraid of being alive.
- Glenn Rhee: Being afraid is what's kept us alive.
- Maggie Greene: No. It's how we kept breathing.
- [first lines]
- Carl Grimes: [Carl tells Rick that he never woke him up in the morning] You didn't wake me up.
- Rick Grimes: 'Cause I knew you were up all night reading comics with a flashlight.
- [Clara answers Rick's three questions before she dies]
- Clara: What were... the questions? The three questions?
- Rick Grimes: [Rick tears up] How many Walkers have you killed?
- Clara: [Clara bleeds out] Eddie... Eddie killed... killed them all. Until...
- Rick Grimes: How many people have you killed?
- Clara: [Clara whispers] Just me. Just me.
- Rick Grimes: Why?
- Clara: [Clara breathes out] You don't... you don't get to come back. You don't get to come back from things. You don't...
- [when Clara passes away in front of Rick]
- [Carl and Rick see the sick pig Violet]
- Carl Grimes: What's up with Violet?
- Rick Grimes: Carl, I told you not to name them. They're not piglets anymore. They're food.
- Carl Grimes: I just thought, you know, until... okay.
- [Daryl sees Beth and Zach have a hard time saying good-bye to each other]
- Daryl Dixon: It's like a damn romance novel.
- [Michonne brings back comics for Carl to read]
- Michonne: [Michonne smiles] Somebody hit the jackpot.
- Carl Grimes: [Carl smiles] No way. Awesome! Thank you.
- Michonne: I get to read 'em when you're done.
- [Daryl talks to Carol about Rick still bringing in people]
- Daryl Dixon: You know, Rick brought in a lot of them, too.
- Carol Peletier: Not recently. Give the stranger sanctuary, keeping people fed, you're gonna have to learn to live with the love.
- Daryl Dixon: Right.
- [Rick gives Carl a list of things he can do around the prison]
- Rick Grimes: Do your chores. Read comics. Maybe some books, too. Hang out with Patrick. Maybe go to story time.
- Carl Grimes: Dad, that's for kids.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick smiles] Yeah.
- [Michonne asks Daryl if he's ready to go into the Big Spot store]
- Michonne: We're gonna do this, Detective?
- Daryl Dixon: Let's do it.
- [Beth tells Daryl that she doesn't cry anymore]
- Beth Greene: [about Zach] I don't cry anymore, Daryl. I'm just glad I got to know him, you know?
- Daryl Dixon: Me, too.
- Beth Greene: [Daryl hangs his head] Are you okay?
- Daryl Dixon: Just tired of losing people is all.
- Beth Greene: [when Beth hugs onto Daryl] I'm glad I didn't say good-bye. I hate good-byes.
- Daryl Dixon: Me, too.
- [Carol shows Daryl the buildup of Walkers around the fence]
- Carol Peletier: About today, I don't know if we're gonna be able to spare a lot of people for the run.
- Daryl Dixon: That place is good to go. We're gonna move on it.
- Carol Peletier: Yeah. The thing is, we had a pretty big buildup overnight. Dozens more towards tower three. It's getting as bad as last month. They don't spread out anymore.
- Daryl Dixon: With more of us sitting here, we're drawing more of them out. You get enough of those damn fence-clingers, they start to herd up.
- Carol Peletier: Pushing against the fences again. It's manageable, but unless we get ahead of it, not for long. Sorry, Pookie.
- [Carol smiles as Daryl scoffs]
- [Hershel shows Rick a gardening technique with the plants]
- Hershel Greene: These leaves are gonna be in the shade, so we won't get any good fruit from it. So we just pinch it off here. Things break, but they can still grow. These little bristles, they'll take root and we'll have a whole new plant.
- [Hershel tells Rick that he needs to look the part of a farmer]
- Hershel Greene: You're growing us enough food so we won't need to do runs soon. But we do have to find you a good pair of overalls. You need to look the part. A little piece of wheat out of the corner of your mouth. Maybe a bigger ass.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick chuckles] Yeah.
- [Hershel tells Rick that the council members want Rick to carry his gun outside the fence]
- Hershel Greene: Listen, the rest of the council: Daryl, Glenn, Carol, Sasha, all of them... they wanted me to talk to you. When you go out there, you got to take your gun.
- Rick Grimes: It's just outside the fence. I have my knife. I get in trouble, six bullets isn't gonna make the difference.
- Hershel Greene: Rick, we want you to be safe. Bring your gun.
- [Zach tries to guess what Daryl did before the apocalypse]
- Zach: Well, the way you are at the prison, you being on the council, you're able to track, you're helping people, but you're still being kind of... surly. Big swing here. Homicide cop.
- Daryl Dixon: [when Michonne laughs] What's so funny?
- Michonne: Nothing. It makes perfect sense.
- Daryl Dixon: Actually, the man's right. Undercover.
- Zach: Come on, really?
- Daryl Dixon: Yep. I don't like to talk about it 'cause it was a lot of heavy shit, you know?
- Zach: Dude, come on, really?
- Zach: [as Daryl stares silently at Zach] Okay. I'll just keep guessing, I guess.
- Daryl Dixon: Yeah, you keep doing that.
- [Sasha asks the runners if they're ready to go into the Big Spot store]
- Sasha Williams: All right, we go in, stay in formation for the sweep. After that, you all know what you're supposed to look for. Any questions?
- Tyreese Williams: Was there ever a time that you weren't the boss of me?
- Sasha Williams: [Sasha smiles] You had a few years before I was born.
- [Rick tells Clara that they call the dead 'Walkers']
- Rick Grimes: You have to have numbers. People are the best defense against Walkers or people. We help each other.
- Clara: You call them 'Walkers'?
- [as Rick remains silent]
- [Clara asks for Rick's help with the dead boar carcuss]
- Clara: I know you don't know me. Okay, I know that. But can you please help me get this to my husband? We haven't eaten in days.
- [Clara asks Rick if he has a camp nearby]
- Clara: Do you have a camp around here?
- Rick Grimes: Yeah.
- Clara: [about her and her husband] Could we possibly come back with you? We've been doing... very badly on our own.
- Rick Grimes: I'd have to meet him.
- [Rick tells Clara to not try anything or she'll be the one who loses]
- Rick Grimes: Look, I don't know you, so I'm just gonna tell you this. You try anything... anything... you're gonna be the one who loses.
- Clara: [Clara in a low voice] I don't have anything else to lose.
- Rick Grimes: No. You do.
- [Clara asks Rick if he had to do those same things her and Eddie did to survive]
- Clara: What Eddie and I had to do, did you do things like that? Did you? Do you think you get to come back from them?
- Rick Grimes: I hope so.
- Clara: Yeah? I hope we answer your three questions to your satisfaction.
- [Mika asks Patrick if he's coming to story time with Carol]
- Mika Samuels: You coming to story time tonight?
- Patrick: Uh, yeah.
- Mika Samuels: See you then.
- Patrick: [Patrick looks to Carl] I go sometimes. I'm immature. You wouldn't dig it. It's for kids.
- Carl Grimes: I'm gonna head up there, too.
- [Clara begs Rick to please not stop her from being with Eddie]
- Clara: [Clara sobs] I wanted to take the boar. I just knew... I knew I'd get you here so much quicker.
- Clara: [Clara cries] He's starving. He's slowing. He needs something alive. Please, I told you, I can't be without him. And so I kept him. It was wrong. I can't do things like this. And... and you have to do things like this.
- Clara: [Clara asks Rick to not kill her after] Let me be like him. Don't stop it. Don't end it after.
- Rick Grimes: [as Clara takes out her knife] No.
- Clara: Let me be with him.
- Rick Grimes: [when Clara stabs herself in the stomach] No!
- [Carol reads out of a book during story time with the children]
- Carol Peletier: 'The children fastened their eyes upon their bit of candle and watched it melt slowly and pitilessly away. Saw the half inch of wick stand alone at last. Saw the feeble flame rise and fall. Climb the thin tower of smoke. Linger at its top a moment and then... '
- [Tyreese tells Karen that he doesn't want to go out on runs either]
- Karen: What?
- Tyreese Williams: I don't like going out there, either.
- [Glenn asks for Maggie to stay behind from going out on the run]
- Glenn Rhee: I don't think you should go today.
- Maggie Greene: Really?
- Glenn Rhee: Yeah.
- Maggie Greene: We have the suits.
- Glenn Rhee: Yeah, but you don't have to go. You shouldn't.
- Maggie Greene: [Maggie sits up to Glenn's face] You know everything's gonna work out, right? Right?
- Glenn Rhee: Right. Right.
- Glenn Rhee: [Glenn kisses Maggie's lips] But you're staying, okay?
- Maggie Greene: [Maggie smiles] Fine.
- [Tyreese tells Karen that he doesn't want to kill Walkers on the fence anymore]
- Tyreese Williams: I was thinking of going on the run today.
- Karen: Okay.
- Tyreese Williams: I don't like killing them on the fence. I hate it. I mean, when they're coming at you out there, it's different. You don't even think about it. When they're stacked up against the chain-link, you're just face-to-face. I... I just wanted to do something different to help out.
- Karen: You always volunteered to do it.
- Tyreese Williams: [Tyreese smiles] That's because you were always doing it. Just thought I could get to know you.
- Karen: [Karen kisses Tyreese] You did.
- [when the two smile]
- [Bob asks Sasha to go on the run with her]
- Bob Stookey: Let me earn my keep.
- Sasha Williams: You were out on your own when Daryl found you.
- Bob Stookey: That's right.
- Sasha Williams: I just want to make sure you know how to play on a team.
- Daryl Dixon: We ain't gonna do it unless it's easy.
- Glenn Rhee: You know he was a medic in the Army.
- Bob Stookey: [Bob looks to Sasha, smiling] You a hell of a tough sell. You know that?
- Sasha Williams: [when Sasha finally agrees] Okay.
- [Daryl and the group of runners arrive at the Big Spot discount store]
- Daryl Dixon: Army came in and put these fences up. Made it a place for the people to go. Last week when we spotted this place, there was a bunch of Walkers behind this chain-link keeping people out like a bunch of guard dogs.
- Bob Stookey: [as the group see no Walkers] So they all just left?
- [Clara tells Rick how her and Eddie survived on their own]
- Clara: There were a lot of us and... now it's just Eddie and me. And I wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for him. And it isn't that... he saved me over and over again or that he showed me the things that I had to do or... to be willing to do. If he wasn't still here... I-I couldn't be. I just... I couldn't.
- Rick Grimes: What were they?
- Clara: What?
- Rick Grimes: The things you had to be willing to do?
- Clara: Um... eating whatever we could find... animal carcasses and rotten fruit... and... leaving people behind. Hiding from people who needed my help. Unlike you.
- Rick Grimes: This is not charity.
- [last lines]
- Hershel Greene: [Hershel tells Rick that some people are so far gone but not them] You tried to help her. You couldn't. No one could. Some people are too far gone. You're not. You tried to help her.
- Rick Grimes: How that woman wound up, I got close to that. If I lost Carl and Judith, if I lost this place...
- Hershel Greene: Not then, Rick. Not even then. You came back. Your boy came back. You get to come back. You do.
- [Patrick asks Carol if he can be excused from story time]
- Patrick: Ma'am, may I be dismissed?
- Carol Peletier: What is it?
- Patrick: I'm not feeling very well.
- Carol Peletier: Sometimes you're gonna have to fight through it. What if you wind up out there alone? You just give up because you're feeling bad?
- Patrick: No, it's just I don't want to yack on somebody.
- [when the other kids move away from Patrick]
- Patrick: Go
- [Zach says good-bye to Beth before leaving for the run]
- Zach: Well, the council pulled back everyone on the coal crew from going on the run. They're shorthanded right now. I figured I'd step up to help, go with 'em. Just, you know, wanted to make sure that I saw you before.
- Beth Greene: [Beth smiles] Okay.
- Zach: I just... 'cause, you know, it's dangerous going out there.
- Beth Greene: [Beth chuckles before kissing Zach] I know.
- Zach: Okay, are you gonna say good-bye?
- Beth Greene: [Beth smiles while walking off] Nope.
- Rick Grimes: You didn't wake me up.
- Carl Grimes: I knew you were up all night reading comics with a flashlight.
- Carl Grimes: You didn't wake me up.
- Rick Grimes: I knew you were up all night reading comics with a flashlight.
