Film4’s annual budget has dropped from £25 million to £22.5 Million for 2024.
The Poor Things backer confirmed the reduction with us, adding that the figure was “in line with recent years.”
“Film4 is the largest Psb funder of independent film in the UK. Our budget is set annually, in line with Channel 4’s financials, to ensure we can best deliver sustainable, long-term support to the industry,” a spokesperson said.
“We have recently had some of our most prolific and successful years, and we are committed to maintaining a similar level of support in the future, backing around 10-12 films per year, maintaining our cultural impact and continuing to champion the most distinctive and innovative filmmaking talent.”
Film4’s reduced budget is still higher than BBC Film, which has remained at around £11M (including overhead) for the best part of a decade, and the BFI Filmmaking Fund, which sits at around £18m a year.

In the final minutes of Netflix’s Scoop, a fictionalised behind-the-scenes account of Newsnight’s infamous Prince Andrew interview, Billie Piper’s character Sam buys a kebab. Two lamb shawarmas – her usual, says the vendor, who gestures at the TV news and asks if she’s seen all this business with the prince? Boy, he’d love to have been in the room when that interview was filmed. Sam McAlister looks wistfully at the screen with the beginning of a smile on her face. “Yeah I did. I saw it,” she tells him, and then turns and leaves.
So humble. So real. So unmotivated by personal glory. Sam McAlister could have told the kebab shop man that she very much was in the room when that interview was filmed, and that as the guest booker on Newsnight, without her it might never even have happened. She doesn’t. The former...

Channel 4 is compiling a plan to enact its biggest round of layoffs in more than 15 years, with up to 200 staff potentially in line to be let go. The figure would represent around 17% of the network’s overall headcount.
According to The Guardian, which broke the news, Channel 4 head honchos have been working on the plan since late last year, with a view to doubling down on digital streaming while acknowledging linear difficulties and trying to keep its circa-£700M ($887M) content budget steady as it battles against economic forces.
“Like every organisation, we are having to deal with an extremely uncertain economy in the short term and the need to accelerate our transformation to become a wholly digital public service broadcaster in the long term,” a spokeswoman said. “As a result, we need to continue to divest from our linear channels business and simplify our operations to become a leaner organisation.

Channel 4 is in “market shock territory” and may finally look to use its £75M ($94M) revolving credit facility next year, according to CEO Alex Mahon.
Mahon faced a barrage of questions about the embattled Gogglebox broadcaster’s finances from the Culture, Media & Sport Committee this morning and was at pains to stress how bad the ad market has been this year and its impact on Channel 4.
In line with rivals, she said Channel 4 hasn’t seen predicted recoveries in H2 or Q4 of 2023 and revenues will likely be down around 8% for 2023, while the channel expects to post a deficit following three years of surplus.

Mahon faced a barrage of questions about the embattled Gogglebox broadcaster’s finances from the Culture, Media & Sport Committee this morning and was at pains to stress how bad the ad market has been this year and its impact on Channel 4.

Exclusive: Channel 4’s finance boss is to exit after five years, coming at a tricky time for the Gogglebox network.
Vince Russell has decided to leave at the end of the year and will work alongside interim Terry Downing, a former Endemol and Fox finance exec, until then. The search for Finance Director Russell’s long-term replacement has started.
Russell joined Channel 4 in 2018, overseeing finances during the pandemic, privatization period and, more recently, the economic downturn brought on by the ad recession. Prior to Channel 4, he worked for Sky in various finance and product roles.
His boss, Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Allan, said Russell had “helped shepherd the channel through a very interesting period with great skill and unwavering good humour – steering Channel 4 through the pandemic and then on to achieve some tremendous results including posting record revenues and programme investment in 2022.”

Studio Lambert has introduced the world to Gogglebox, Race Across the World and The Circle but the indie has faced its greatest test in Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge, and the road has been a bit of a bumpy one.
Stephen Lambert’s 15-year-old British production house, which its founder says is having its busiest year following a strategic shift to “go big” on premium unscripted, took on its grandest undertaking when Netflix gave it the weighty reins to the Squid Game competition series.
Alongside fellow UK indie The Garden, Studio Lambert has subsequently overseen a competition with 456 contestants – about 20 times that of the average reality show – with the largest prize fund in history.

In an exclusive interview ahead of the slate reveal, Binge Executive Director Hurbert-Burns talked up the reach of the streaming platform and Foxtel, which is Australia’s leading pay service.

The film industry faces intense pressure, yet some independent cinemas are still flourishing. We meet the volunteers who are making it happen
It’s a warm autumn evening and the graffiti along the side wall of Bristol’s Cube Microplex cinema shouts in the unseasonal sunshine as a gaggle of people gather quietly around the front gates. They are here for a screening of five short films, showcasing the work of some of the UK’s up-and-coming black film-makers. Several of the writers and directors are expected, and there is a tantalising buzz of voices from the cinema courtyard.
The punters surge in and are directed to a cash-only volunteer-run bar, before settling into faded velvet seats in a 100-seat auditorium. There is a ripple of excitement when someone in the audience recognises a famous face. She can’t quite put a name to him, but all becomes clear when...

“It’s like The Hunger Games, the AMPTP thinks they can starve us back to work,” said Bectu National Secretary Spencer MacDonald, as around 200 below-the-line workers gathered in London’s Leicester Square this afternoon to urge a swift end to the actors strike.
MacDonald was bullish, however, in the face of a possible resolution in the coming days, telling studio bosses across the pond: “Every single time, we win these disputes.”
“We need to remind employers that by dragging their heels and digging themselves in all they are doing is digging a bigger hole for themselves,” he added. “And we want to talk about the impact on our membership.”
Although unions in the UK are forbidden to join foreign strikes by tight labor laws, a recent Bectu survey found that an incredible 80% of UK crew felt they had been impacted by what is happening in the States, and Bectu has...

Mega Merger
The proposed merger between Indian powerhouse Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Sony‘s Indian TV businesses, which has been nearly two years in the making, is likely to be delayed further, Sony said in a filing on Friday. The companies cleared a key regulatory hurdle in August, but there are other matters pending, especially that of leadership. The original plan had foreseen that Zee’s CEO Punit Goenka would be its captain, while Sony would own a 51% controlling stake. However, Goenka was banned from managing any listed company in India following an interim regulatory report that accused him and Zee founder Subhash Chandra of running the company for their own benefit and “siphoning off” money.
Goenka appealed the decision with India’s Securities Appellate Tribunal, who heard his plea on Wednesday but has reserved a verdict for at least a week.

Channel 4 has “perhaps been a bit more honest” than its rivals about the recent commissioning slowdown, according to programs boss Ian Katz, who said there has been a “perception” that his network’s financial picture is “more dramatic than elsewhere.”
Katz was grilled at the Edinburgh TV Festival about its heavily-reported commissioning slowdown and the exec said Channel 4 has “perhaps been a bit more honest” about financial woes than other broadcasters, all of whom he claimed have been impacted.
He blamed the slowdown on the ad revenue slump, the U.S. strikes and “streamers pulling billions from their budgets” and said that much of the press around Channel 4 canceling shows due to its own financial picture is “not true” but was due to the natural cycle.
“The commissioning slowdown has hit the whole industry and every commercial broadcaster has been affected by the ad revenue slump,” he said. “Other...

Stephen Lambert, CEO of storied UK producer Studio Lambert, has delved deep into the differences in casting between the UK and U.S. versions of The Traitors.
Much has been made of the fact that the Alan Cumming-hosted Peacock U.S. version opted for several celebrities amongst civillians, while the Claudia Winkleman-hosted British version was 100% civillian.
“A lot of American celebrities come from competiton shows in the States so they were good game players,” said Lambert, whose All3Media-backed outfit produced both versions. “They were more strategic and were willing to play devious. That gave a slightly different taste and one suitable to the American audience, who are used to reality shows being strategic and underhand.”
NBC’s Sharon Vuong, the network’s Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming, said she wanted to “take the pressure off of celebrities” by mixing them with civillians in what was one...

Channel 4 executive pay soared to record highs last year amid industry fury over salaries for senior leaders at the UK commercial broadcaster.
Bumper pay packets were expected for 2022, but Channel 4’s annual report lays bare how much its top team earned as they fought off privatization and delivered a stable commercial performance.
Channel 4’s fortunes have soured in recent months as an ad market downturn has forced it to cancel and delay shows, and significantly slow down new commissions.
As Channel 4 commissions all of its content from independent producers, suppliers have been asked to suck up some of this pain, which has fuelled anger over executive salaries.
Alex Mahon’s total pay packet rose 25% to £1.5M ($2M) last year and was the most a Channel 4 Chief Executive has been paid in the company’s 40-year history.

Exclusive: On-the-block super-indie All3Media saw revenues rocket to £1B ($1.3B) last year, as accounts reveal it has taken majority voting control of The Traitors producer Studio Lambert.
According to a Companies House filing for the outfit’s holding company Dlg Acquisitions, All3Media boosted sales by 17% for the 2022 calendar year, with revenues just topping the £1B mark.
Ebitda shot up by a similar proportion to £100M and total group operating profit was up from £26M to £40M. In 2022, All3Media produced more than 4,000 hours of programing including the likes of The Traitors, The Tinder Swindler and The Tourist.
The group said the “current macro-economic climate including the continued impact of Covid-19 and the impact of inflation presents a risk and challenge,” however.
The issue is being managed by “reviewing production protocols and analysing opportunities to produce content more efficiently,” amongst other approaches, it added.

Exclusive: In a move that would have shaken up the UK broadcasting landscape, ITV attempted to poach Channel 4’s Gogglebox earlier this year, just a few months before saying it was mulling a bid for the show’s production outfit.
Deadline can reveal that ITV programs boss Kevin Lygo, who is said to be a huge Gogglebox fan, held exploratory conversations with Studio Lambert over switching the show from one commercial broadcaster to the other several months ago.
Gogglebox’s contract is renewed roughly once every three years, we understand, and it was mid-contract when Lygo made contact. At present, the show is staying put on Channel 4.

The hugely popular Outlander is back with a seventh season, the penultimate one, in fact, as we soon prepare for life without these characters. Two of our very favourites, and we speak for most fans, are Brianna & Roger – so needless to say, we were rather pleased to have the opportunity to speak to both Sophie Skelton & Richard Rankin to mark this latest series.
We spoke about their characters and their fate, and whether things are looking up for them in this latest season (spoiler alert: don’t get too positive) – while they also look ahead and discuss the eighth and final season. In this enjoyable, conversational chat, the funny, affable duo also speak about Gogglebox, for which we’re now convinced should happen.

U.K. broadcaster ITV has confirmed that it’s “actively exploring the possible acquisition” of “Fleabag” and “The Traitors” producer All3Media.

“There can be no certainty as to whether any transaction will take place, nor as to the terms of any such transaction,” reads the letter. “A further announcement will be made if and when appropriate.”
Citing sources close to the deal, Reuters reported on Thursday that ITV is looking to combine All3Media with its own in-house production and distribution business ITV Studios, which itself has been the subject of sales speculation in the last year.

Exclusive: Channel 4’s television audience sunk to a record low in May amid a painful period for the British broadcaster, which is cutting costs as it navigates a cratering ad market.
Channel 4’s main network audience share stood at 4.48% last month, which is said to be the worst four-week period in the commercial broadcaster’s 40-year history.
One source said the ratings had sparked scenes of “panic” at Channel 4, though other insiders were more philosophical and pointed to bumper online viewing.
Audiences streamed a record 5Bn minutes of Channel 4 content in April, with shows including Married At First Sight Australia performing well. May’s digital performance was also up 20% year on year.
Despite the shift to streaming, television viewing remains foundational to Channel 4’s commercial health, with linear advertising accounting for less than 70% of its £1Bn ($1.3Bn) revenue.
Channel 4’s record low audience share was echoed in other ratings data.

BBC smash The Traitors has won the BAFTA TV Award for Reality & Constructed Factual.
The Claudia Winkleman-hosted breakout series won in an all-bbc category against Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and We Are Black and British. Presenter Winkleman is also up for Best Entertainment Performance for the show.
The Traitors made a huge splash when it premiered late last year in the UK. Versions of the Dutch original have sold around the world, with some sources saying it has helmed something of a global formats revival. The show features a number of ‘Faithfuls,’ whose job it is to smote out the three ‘Traitors,’ while competing in challenges and adding to a weighty prize fund.
Last year’s Reality and Constructed Factual winner was Gogglebox.
Accepting the award, Winkleman thanked producer Studio Lambert and execs at the BBC for making it happen. Stephen Lambert, who runs Studio Lambert,...

Former England footballer Paul “Gazza” Gascoigne has become the first ever winner of experimental Channel 4 reality show Scared of the Dark.
Gascoigne came out on top over seven other celebrities, after spending 180 hours in complete darkness – living, eating, sleeping and completing challenges.
The series, billed as a “world first”, came to a close on Thursday (20 April) with the winner announced by host Danny Dyer.
Following his win, Gascoigne said he had been “nervous” to take part but said the experience had made him “a better person”.
“People always question my mental strength but my success on this series proves that I am strong,” he said.
“I was nervous going in there but having gotten this far on the series made me the happiest man around.
“I’m so happy. It’s unbelievable. I’ve got my smile back. I’m a better person.”

Titillating trash. Satisfying drama. As deep as it thinks it is – all things that Netflix’s Obsession isn’t. This four-part series adapted from Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage (memorably filmed as Louis Malle’s 1992 feature film of the same name) aims to be an arty, meaningful portrait of erotic obsession but turns out to be more of a boner-killer.
It’s not the fault of the cast, who commit mightily to the task. Richard Armitage and Charlie Murphy dial up their intensity to dangerous levels as William and Anna, two people whose affair blasts apart their lives.
Anna is dating William’s besotted son, but shares a sexual frisson with his father that proves irresistible. After a chance meeting at a work do in which Will breathily pushes an olive between Anna’s lips and gets such a lob-on that he has to spend the rest of the episode...

Gogglebox viewers were left shocked after a debate about Waitrose between Giles and Mary descended into a sweary rant.
During Friday (7 April) night’s episode of the show, the Wiltshire-based married couple tuned into Netflix’s new series Beef.
Giles commented that one of the characters looked like the sort of person who would complain in Waitrose, saying: “He’d be sent to that problem desk, Mary, which I always avoid. Somewhere in the middle of Waitrose where there’s always people queuing and tutting. Do you remember that place? Where they express dissatisfaction.”
However, Mary shot back at him: “Oh, you’re just such a b******. Waitrose is beautifully run, there’s never a queue of people tutting.”
Shocked by her impassioned defence, Giles jokingly asked his wife if she worked for Waitrose.
“Do you work for Waitrose, Mary? I think you’re on a retainer,” he said, with her replying: “No,...
