Mayhem at the Whitfield Mansion
lavatch8 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There is a lesson to be learned for everyone when the dynamic travel writer Audrey has a whirlwind romance and quickly marries Xander in Hawaii. It is always a good idea to first meet the spouse's family before tying the knot.

At the Whitfield mansion, the word dysfunction does not go far enough to describe this clan. Not only is every member of the Whitfield family repellent, but the situation is compounded by inbreeding!

Marlena is the scheming matriarch who coupled with both Lionel, the father of Xander, but also Xander himself. A little baby girl, Nicole, was the result of the congress of Marlena and Xander. Yet, Xander is unaware that he is a father.

This moment in which it was revealed that Marlena had conceived a delivered a child fathered by her son-in-law, then covered up the truth from her husband, her young son-in-law, and the daughter was the most chilling in the film. At this point, I felt the need for an intermission ... and a shower!

Audrey shows up on cue to the Whitfield mansion and the subsequent encounter is much worse than "Meet the Fockers." Lionel makes the mistake of lingering at the top on the stairs and becomes the first casualty.

There ensues frenetic action in a wild sequence of metaphorical backstabbing and actual stabbing. The bad behavior of the Whitfield family is complemented by two sleazy attorneys, Teresa and Warren, seeking to monetize their interests in the family. The gardener Sonny is also busy in hooking up with both Marlena and her daughter Nicole.

The filmmakers didn't quite hit all the right notes with a tongue-in-cheek style appropriate for the romps through the Whitfield mansion. The best character was Marlena, who in the biblical sense "knew" the husband, the son, the gardener, the attorney, and, at the end, a new CEO on the West Coast. The film was a farcical variation on Goldsmith's comedy "She Stoops to Conquer." In this film, the tagline should be "She Strips to Conquer"!

Truly Awful
dukeofburl13 January 2024
This movie makes you feel like your IQ is dropping for every 5 minutes of watching it. The writing is absolutely awful. The acting is as bad as it can possibly get. In one scene, a gun is being pointed at someone and it looks like a toy gun; there's not even a hole on the end for a bullet to potentially come out of. At least try to make it seem real. And the actor who got "shot" doesn't know how to act injured at all. The sound effects department doesn't know how to make a gunshot sound. The writers thought they were clever by adding all kinds of twists and turns but it just got to ridiculous. No one should be proud of being associated with this movie.

Lifetime at it's most self-aware!
dianereneew2 December 2023
If you love the over-the-top plot twists and over acting of a true Lifetime Movie as much as I do, this is the movie for you. The premise was simple but, my goodness, every time I thought I knew what was going on this movie added 1 curveball after another. I literally laughed out loud a few times at the absurdity - yet it was done in such a self-aware way that it didn't ruin the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment down to the final scene.

Without giving anything away, this is the story of a whirlwind romance and marriage between 2 beautiful and successful people. He gets summoned home by his domineering father, and tells her she should stay at home to finish the project she is working on. He tells her that she will meet his family at a later date but he wants to shield her from them a bit longer as they are very dysfunctional. Her project ends sooner than expected so she decides to surprise him by showing up at his father's estate. That, my friends, is where the real fun begins ;)

I highly recommend this movie for pure entertainment purposes. If you are looking for a serious, based-on-a-true-story movie, watch something else!

8/10 stars.
