- In a house on a hill in rural Alaska lives rock star of the dog mushing world, Lance Mackey, along with 50 dogs, two small children, his partner, and a ton of drugs. There are no rules and, no boundaries. Then it all comes crashing down
- Alaskan born Lance Mackey lived an unusually wild life. The undisputed rock star of the dog sledding world grew up in difficult circumstances in rural Alaska, with his mom, dad, and a little brother. "The Mackey boys" where known as troublemakers from an early age on, being left to themselves most of the time. Lance's mother was a small plane pilot and his father was a famous dog musher, who also ran several companies.
Lance had a troubled relationship with his father and escaped into a commercial fishing career where drugs were everywhere. He eventually started dog sled racing, in an attempt to make his father proud and mend their broken relationship. But then tragedy struck, and Lance was diagnosed with stage four cancer, leaving him fighting for his life.
Miraculously he battled through his illness and came back stronger than ever, winning four consecutive Iditarod races and finally gaining the admiration of his dad. Eventually dog sled racing was replaced by car racing, but a comeback was inevitable.
A few years later he tested positive for methamphetamine in his comeback race where he was attempting to win another Iditarod trophy. At this point he had a partner and two small children at the age of 2 and 4. The small family decides that Lance needs to go to rehab. When he comes back, he's a changed man.
But just days after his return, his partner Jen is killed in a tragic ATV accident, and Lance is left caring for the two children on his own. A close family friend of Jen and Lance, Seane, steps in and they start a relationship.
At this point Lance has picked up car racing again. One day, he crashes dramatically at high speed in a race. The car is totally wrecked, but Lance miraculously survives. During examination, a PET scan picks up strange patterns around his lungs. Further tests reveal that the cancer he thought he had defeated 15 years ago is back with a vengeance.
As he starts treatment, he realizes that his days may be numbered and decides to start creating special memories with his now 3- and 5 -year old kids. He sells everything he has, buys his dad's old mobile home and embarks on a nomadic life, driving around Alaska.
But just as it seems the treatment is working, everything suddenly changes, and they realize that his illness is terminal. His new partner, Seane, is to take care of the children and they decide to get married. Lance's life is deteriorating rapidly and the wedding is held alongside his hospital bed.
But before Lance is even able to sign the marriage papers he passes away on September 7th, just 5 hours after the wedding ceremony.
Now, as his legendary status just keeps growing, his Kidds, Seane and the family tries to navigate the emptiness he has left behind.
