Large numbers of stars are depicted going out almost simultaneously, as the Lanterns watch planet-side. These stars are likely billions of light-years away, and it would take that number of years for the light (or lack thereof) to reach them. To give some perspective, Earth's sun is about 8 light-minutes away; if it suddenly winked out, no one on Earth would know about it until 8 minutes later.
