Earlier this year, NBC pulled out all the stops for it special “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.” And on Dec. 21, CBS is throwing a birthday party for one of its biggest stars, Dick Van Dyke, who headlined the landmark 1961-66 sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show” as well as the lighthearted detective series “Diagnosis, Murder,” which ran from 1993-2000.
“Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic” is a two-hour valentine to the actor, who celebrated his birthday on Dec. 13, featuring special guests such as Jane Seymour, Rob Reiner, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen and testimonials from Carol Burnett, Mark Hamill and “Mary Poppins” herself, Julie Andrews. Song-and-dance also play an important part of the special. Van Dyke earned a Tony in 1961 for “Bye Bye Birdie” and reprised his role in the 1963 musical. Since its debut on CBS on September 11, 1967, there was something distinctively special about "The Carol Burnett Show." This sketch comedy series spanned 279 episodes during its initial run, featuring acclaimed performances and comedic skits that were witty, sharp, and heavy on detail. Every actor who was a part of the show slipped into the shoes of a variety of characters that still remain memorable, including Carol Burnett's Charwoman (her signature role), and her parody of silent-film actress Nora Desmond. Some sketches were parodies of classic films such as "Gone With The Wind" or "Sunset Boulevard," while others mimicked soap opera structures or commercial spoofs.
By 1977, the popularity of the show had spiked, leading to some of the outstanding sketches being re-edited into standalone programs compiled in "Carol Burnett and Friends," which mashed the best skits into half-hour episodes. While the show relied on guest stars such as Jim Nabors and...

Based on Gold Derby’s odds, one of the absolute tightest 2023 Creative Arts Emmy races involves Best Variety Special Writing contenders Chris Rock and John Mulaney, both of whom have previously conquered the category and are now facing off for the first time ever. Having both pushed their comedy to new levels of boldness in their respective Netflix specials “Selective Outrage” and “Baby J,” they provide voters with a truly tough choice when it comes to honoring the most impressive writing of the year.
This contest is made even more interesting by the fact that Rock and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”) are competing against each other after jointly earning four writing nominations and one win for “The Chris Rock Show” over two decades ago. Also included in this lineup are the sketch comedy special “Would It Kill You to Laugh?” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love....

Five years after scoring back-to-back Emmy wins for helming the 89th and 90th Oscars, Glenn Weiss could clinch his fifth Best Variety Special Directing trophy for his work on the latest Academy Awards ceremony. Given the knowledge that Jimmy Kimmel hosted said two 2010s Oscars events as well as the one Weiss is currently nominated for, a majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy predictors expect history to simply repeat itself, and they are wise to think so.
Weiss’s most formidable challengers in this contest are producing Emmy winner Jay-Z and seven-time directing nominee Hamish Hamilton, who are recognized for conducting Rihanna’s halftime performance at the most recent Super Bowl. Also in the mix are the directors of the stand-up specials “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.”

Although the Emmy Award for Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special has not gone to a retrospective program of any kind since the category was established in 2018, several such winners were crowned over the preceding decades when all variety specials competed for the same prize. This year’s pre-recorded program lineup happens to include two televised celebrations of industry legends, one of which – “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” – is heavily favored to become the first special of its kind to achieve this exact honor.
The other commemorative special that could block the Burnett one’s path to victory is “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter.” Based on the untested nature of their format, both will have to watch out for every one of their fellow nominees, which include “Lizzo: Live in Concert” and Netflix stand-up specials starring John Mulaney, Trevor Noah, and Wanda Sykes.

Does Nick Offerman have Best Drama Guest Actor on lock? Will Elton John Egot? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to make their first post-nominations Creative Arts predictions.
Offerman has been the fan-favorite pick to win Best Drama Guest Actor for “The Last of Us” ever since “Long, Long Time” aired in January, but can he pull it off? He not only faces his episode co-star Murray Bartlett as expected but two more “Last of Us” guest stars in Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Montreal Woodard, who at 10 years old is the category’s youngest nominee and is the second deaf acting nominee ever after Marlee Matlin. If the “Last of Us” guys do vote-split, James Cromwell and his fiery eulogy on “Succession” are right there waiting in the wings.

Remember AMC’s “The Walking Dead”? You know, the biggest series on TV at one time. Most-watched basic cable show in history, and I can guarantee that will never be topped. But yet, an Emmy dud. The series (which will live on via a frenzy of spin-offs) ended its run last November after 11 seasons… and it’s still ignored by TV Academy voters, failing to pick up a single nomination on Wednesday.
And yet… this may have been the most successful year at the Emmys ever for “The Walking Dead.” That’s because two of the franchise’s most beloved actors, Steven Yeun and Jon Bernthal, picked up their first-ever Emmy nominations. Granted, it’s not for “The Walking Dead” — Yeun is nominated in lead limited/anthology actor for “Beef” and Bernthal is a comedy guest actor nominee for “The Bear” (which is about… Chicago’s “Beef” restaurant) — but at...

Jay-Z was nominated for another Emmy for directing Rihanna’s halftime show during the 2023 Super Bowl.
Wednesday’s nomination brings the rapper, née Shawn Carter, up to three total primetime Emmy nominations, including a win for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show, which featured performances from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, and a nomination for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for the 2021 Super Bowl Halftime Show, which featured a performance by The Weeknd.
While Jay-Z is credited as an executive producer for the 2021 and 2022 Halftime Shows through his entertainment agency Roc Nation, which produced all three shows alongside Jesse Collins Entertainment and Dps, the rapper upped the game to directing for Rihanna’s mashup performance. You’d think CBS would have jumped at the chance to snag Carol Burnett’s “90 Years of Laughter + Love” birthday special. Not only did the comedy legend’s variety show run on the network for 11 seasons, but so did its 50th anniversary special in 2017.
“We first went to CBS, but they passed,” Burnett told me at an FYC event for the birthday special. “I did my show with them and all my specials, so naturally we went to them.”
Fortunately, NBC bought the special, and it went on to score an impressive 7.6 million viewers. It’s now favored to pick up an Emmy nomination. “NBC couldn’t have been greater,” she said. “They’ve been so supportive right from the get-go.”
A rep for CBS declined to comment.

While I was growing up back in the days when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, there wasn’t a ton of debate over who the funniest women in show business were. It was Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett, usually (but not always) in that order. Lucy was the First Lady of Television, and Carol was the dame who seemingly could do anything on a stage. She could sing, she could dance, she could tell jokes, she could wear crazy outfits with uncommon flair. It didn’t even matter if she sang or danced well, because performing something poorly would simply make her the butt of the joke – and no one could do that better than her.
I attended Hollywood High School and was always proud that it was also Burnett’s alma mater. She took out a full-page ad annually in the yearbook congratulating that year’s senior class. It...

Legendary performer Carol Burnett could add even more accomplishments to her stellar TV career this summer. She has two different programs that could extend her Emmy Awards nomination streak. A bid for either show would make her the first person to ever be nominated in seven consecutive decades. Her career has included 24 nominations with six wins along the way for “The Garry Moore Show” (1962), “Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall” (1963), “The Carol Burnett Show” and “Mad About You” (1997). She has also received major life achievement awards from the Kennedy Center Honors, Screen Actors Guild, Mark Twain Prize and TV Academy Hall of Fame.

If you missed Hulu’s dramatization of the infamous Candy Montgomery murder case last year, don’t fret. HBO Max is here with “Love & Death,” its version of the horrific but true story starring Elizabeth Olsen as Montgomery, the 1980s Texas housewife accused of murdering her best friend (portrayed by Lily Rabe) after having an affair with her husband (Jesse Plemons). The limited series, which debuted April 27 with three episodes, is a showcase for Olsen and a reminder to Emmy voters that maybe they should’ve awarded her powerful performance as a grieving Wanda Maximoff on Marvel’s Disney+ series “WandaVision.” She alone is the reason that “Love & Death” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

How do you plan a birthday party for a legend? Basically, you let them plan it themselves. Carol Burnett was “intimately involved” in the Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love special, which delighted viewers on Wednesday, April 26 on NBC. The special, which aired on her 90th birthday, sat Burnett and best friend Julie Andrews in the front row as stars of the stage and screen flocked to celebrate the comedy icon they all grew up adoring. Executive producers Mark Bracco and Linda Gierahn took TV Insider behind the scenes of the special’s production, from its inception to the day of filming. (Baz Halpin also executive produced.) And by all accounts, it was a memorable labor of love for all those involved. Burnett was in the lead every step of the way, because as Bracco told us, “No one knows the details of her career better than her.

In this case, NBC gave her a good one. The network is set to air “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” on April 26, and the special features both new performances and clips from Burnett’s storied career. And it gave Burnett a chance to reminisce with old friends — and new.
“It’s exactly what I wanted,” Burnett said. “I didn’t want a birthday party with cake and balloons and confetti and all of that. What I wanted was to have an entertaining show. And that’s what we got.

Carol Burnett has always made the audience her priority. Over 11 seasons of her landmark variety show, she indulged fans in countless Tarzan yells, never reshot a sketch when one of her co-stars cracked up and prided herself on getting The Carol Burnett Show‘s weekly crowds (and its staff) out of the studio in time for dinner. Naturally, during the recent taping of the upcoming NBC special Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love, she avoided the trappings of a clip show. And she kept things moving. “It’s a two-hour show, and we were done in about two-and-a-half,” she says of her early birthday party — filmed in front of a live audience. “I want people to feel like they’re seeing a Broadway show, not sitting around waiting for scenery or costume changes.”
