"You Smell Like Cheap Motel Soap!"
lavatch19 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ashley Morris is a talented artist working in the medium of tile. She gets her first big break when she is hired to complete a large panel for the opening of a posh restaurant. But she may be thwarted in her career plans due to matters of the heart.

Ashley has had terrible luck with men. Her marriage to her husband Roger ended when he blundered in with another woman on a surprise birthday party Ashley had planned for him. Next, she is scammed by an dating site hustler named Marco, who cons her out of $8,000. But Ashley and her friend Tess respond by exposing him on the internet.

The film succeeded in its tongue-in-cheek approach to a serious subject. Thankfully, when Marco sought to salvage his "reputation" by harassing Ashley, there were no murders, and the quick-thinking Ashley hatches her own revenge plan. Marco roughed up Ashley's ex-husband Roger, and he took Tess hostage in a motel. But both characters escaped serious harm.

One of the best lines was when Ashley told Marco, "you smell like cheap motel soap." This occurred at the gala opening of the restaurant where Marco is finally is forced to confront his victims.

The most outlandish component of Marco's character was his sincere attachment to a Harlequin romance novel, from which he extracted lines to use on the women he was duping. There was a thoughtful denouement in which Ashley finally discovers true love in the kind character Grant, and Ashley must be wrenched away from her own Harlequin romance novel.

The action was well-paced with snappy dialogue and a nice performance by the actress playing Ashley.

Not the worst

Warning: Spoilers
The opening scene was probably one of the better openings of a recent Lifetime movie. It was unexpected so kudos for making my jaw drop. What an embarrassing way to find out your husband was cheating.

I think this movie is making fun of itself, but it's terrible nonetheless. It still employs the age old Lifetime tropes. The story is very similar to Swindler Seduction which even as a Lifetime movie, felt way more sinister with more stakes than this one. Both have PSA-like dialogue, but SS's conman was way smoother in his approach and I guess played a longer con, so it made more sense how easily the protagonist fell for his charms. On top of the life changing event that happened, it made sense that she became obsessed with stopping him. Overall, that movie is better at this topic. As is the con artist movies with Rib Hillis and Jackee.

I've seen the villain in romcoms on GAC and on streaming so seeing him here as a goofy villain was a miss for me. He wasn't a fun villain, just a goofy one. The Swindler guy seemed way more dangerous with everything to lose in comparison. On top of the twin twist which made the plot more interesting with more tension. Also, this guy, Marco, seemed like he would just move on to his next mark...like why is he not only trying to kill her and destroy her life, but also still con women in the same town????

I get it, but the final scene with the climax had "a very special episode" vibe . Everyone in the restaurant was someone he conned? Then of course the scene with the book and him freaking out over "his precious" like in LOTR.

The movie didn't take itself seriously, and I didn't either. I'm not even against spoofs when it comes to formula movies, but even then, this was a one watch only for me.
