[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the grown-ish series finale “Grown.”] Grown-ish bid farewell after six seasons in an emotional series finale on May 22. In the penultimate episode, Zoey (Yara Shahidi) bolted after Aaron’s (Trevor Jackson) romantic proposal, and she consulted Ana (Francia Raisa), Nomi (Emily Arlook), Vivek (Jordan Buhat), and more about how to handle this delicate situation. So, did Zoey and Aaron get their happy ending? Luka (Luka Sabbat) tried one last time to win Zoey’s heart, but barely tried at all. He FaceTimed Zoey and told her that he’d always loved her. Zoey put him firmly in the friend zone and said they’d forever be “long distance pals.” A big L for Team Luka. Zoey and Aaron were forced to confront their future at Junior’s graduation boat party. She explained that she’s spent the last year trying to be “less selfish” and a “more balanced person.” Zoey admitted that she “...

Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.
Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

When you’re an independent filmmaker, there are a few different ways of working within the TV/streaming space. You could be a TV repairman (of any gender!) or work for the cable company. Those are pretty good. But! If you’re reading this blog, chances are your ambitions run a little more toward creating the content actually populating these devices and platforms. In that case, you could A) create a brand-new series and become its ruthless, dictatorial showrunner, or B) step into an already-existing series as the director of an individual episode.
For the former, there’s always our Episodic Lab. But for the latter, there’s the Film Independent Episodic Directing Intensive–where in just three whirlwind days, a diverse cross-section of veteran directors, showrunners, actors, executives and cinematographers provide a heavy-duty brain dump to six up-and-coming filmmakers, sharing their experiences and knowledge of the episodic directing landscape.

The crew at Cal U is preparing to bid farewell in the second half of grown-ish’s sixth and final season, premiering March 27 on Freeform. In TV Insider’s exclusive video, Yara Shahidi and Marcus Scribner drop some exciting details about the last episodes and reflect on the decade they’ve spent playing Zoey and Junior on black-ish and grown-ish. “I’ve done so much growing up on this set. Zoey, for a long time, has been one year older than me, so in many ways she was kind of living out my life before I even got there,” Yara says. Marcus adds, “This has been 10 years of my life, so I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to grow up on the show.” Yara notes that the final season “lands the plane with a couple of storylines I think we were all excited to figure out what’s going to happen with those characters.

Part two of Good Trouble’s fifth and final season is currently airing on Freeform, followed by Part two of grown-ish‘s sixth and final season in the spring . When it ends, so will the presence of original scripted series on the Disney cable network.
Once a destination for pop culture defining YA series such as Pretty Little Liars, Freeform over the past few years has scaled back its original scripted fare, with no current shows and no major projects in the pipeline.
There have been a lot of questions lately about the viability of original scripted programming on ad-supported basic cable, with many networks pulling away from it due to high costs that are hard to sustain amid declining linear ratings and accelerated cord-cutting.
The prospect of Freeform maintaining an original scripted slate faced further uncertainty when the network was dropped by leading cable operator Charter in September...

Disney's never-ending line of live-action remakes continues in May — there's actually another one later this week, in "Peter Pan & Wendy" — with "The Little Mermaid." Featuring new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda ("Hamilton"), who's also among the producers alongside director Rob Marshall ("Chicago"), the underwater tale of Ariel the Mermaid is unfurling on the big screen next month. Halle Bailey ("Grown-ish") plays Ariel, with Jonah Hauer-King ("A Dog's Way Home") as Eric, the human prince she falls in love with.
Awkwafina ("The Farewell"), Daveed Diggs ("Hamilton"), and Jacob Tremblay ("Room") lend their voices to King Triton's trusted crab servant Sebastian, Ariel's dimwitted seabird friend Scuttle, and Ariel's tropical fish best friend Flounder, respectively. Javier Bardem is playing Ariel's father, King Triton, with Noma Dumezweni ("The Watcher") as Eric's mother Queen Selina, an original character. Lastly, Melissa McCarthy plays the conniving sea witch Ursula, who has ambitions to take over Triton's kingdom.

‘White Men Can’t Jump’ Trailer: 20th Century Studios’ Remake Of The ’90s Classic Hits Hulu On May 19
Did anyone ask for a “White Men Can’t Jump” remake? Doubtful, but the ’90s classic gets the reboot treatment thanks to screenwriters Kenya Barris and Doug Hall. A property like this could be in worse hands, though. Barris — creator of “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish” — is no stranger to the remake game. He’s been involved with updates of “Shaft” and “Cheaper by the Dozen,” with an “Uptown Saturday Night” reimagining also in development.

Are you ready for a new mystery, Cruel Summer fans?
Freeform finally announced a premiere date for the highly-anticipated second season on Monday.
Cruel Summer Season 2 will get underway Monday, June 5 at 9/8c with two back-to-back episodes.
The series will then move to its regular 10 pm timeslot for the remainder of the season.
The decision to keep the show at 10 pm is surprising because Cruel Summer Season 1 was one of the buzziest shows of 2021.
Granted, the show dominated when delayed viewing was factored in, so perhaps the cabler is expecting more of the same this season.
"Set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest, the next chapter of Cruel Summer follows the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship," the logline teases.
"Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan, Isabella and Megan's best friend Luke,...

Fans have watched Yara Shahidi's "Black-ish" character, Zoey Johnson, grow up on our screens for nearly nine years - first in three seasons of the ABC show, and then through five seasons of its Freeform spinoff "Grown-ish." Grown-ish is closing in on an end date at Freeform.
The basic cabler announced Wednesday that the previously announced sixth season will be the last for the Kenya Barris-created comedy.
The first half of Grown-ish Season 6 will premiere this summer, while the second half will be held for 2024.
"We've spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the -ish series, and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement," Barris said in a statement announcing the news.
"To be able to watch Yara, Marcus and our entire Grown-ish family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor."
"From the stories we've told to the talent we've fostered and, most importantly, the memories made, I could not be more proud of everything we've accomplished and the -ish family I've been a part of.

Saweetie may be best known for making iconic club bangers and bops, but now the multihyphenate is ready to tackle a new craft: acting! Following small starring roles on shows like "Grown-ish" and, most recently, Peacock's "Bel-Air," the "Tap In" rapper is testing her acting skills yet again in a new short film for Candy Crush Saga, which she says is "inspired by my favorite female spy movie."
"Honestly, I've been playing them for years, so when they reached out, it was a no-brainer," Saweetie tells Popsugar of teaming up with the virtual puzzle game. The rap star's imaginative film - which was released in honor of the Candy Crush All Stars tournament, kicking off on March 23 - finds her spy-like character and fellow Icy girls attempting a heist for a blue jewelry box, made by Icebox, before their plan is ultimately crushed.

In the last two weeks, Disney has released trailers for both Peter Pan & Wendy and The Little Mermaid, debuting, with Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell and Halle Bailey as Ariel. Both actresses, who co-starred together on Grown-ish, break new ground in playing Disney icons, who have historically been white, and the two friends have been able to share in bringing diversity to the classic stories.
Shahidi told The Hollywood Reporter at Tuesday night’s Los Angeles premiere of Extrapolations, the Apple TV+ drama series in which she also appears, that she’s “so excited to watch Halle onscreen — if there’s anybody that is a princess just in real life, in the world, it’s Halle,” adding that her playing Ariel “made so much sense.”

Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.
Will any of the movies or directors screening here this year go on to change film history?
With five days still to go at SXSW, the juries convened to present the winners.
Narrative feature honors went to writer-director Paris Zarcilla’s “Raging Grace.” On the surface, the tense story of an undocumented Filipina house cleaner and...

Los Angeles, March 11 (Ians) Actress-singer Selena Gomez will “never ever, ever be more in debt” to anyone than actress Francia Raisa.

Speaking on Apple TV+ documentary series ‘Dear…’, Selena said: “My best friend. Her name is Francia. She said, ‘No, I am absolutely getting tested.’ And within three days, she went to get tested, and she was a match. And it was one of those moments where I felt watched over. I know I was so so so lucky (sic)”.
“I understand that that doesn’t happen for a lot of people, and I know the outcome...

Last year, “Bel-Air” caught everyone by surprise. Reboots don’t usually stand toe to toe with the original. And the smart thing about Peacock’s “Bel-Air” was it didn’t try to copy its classic and still highly syndicated inspiration, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Instead, it recognized the times and did a deep dive into issues a Black cast comedy could only touch on over 30 years ago. So intra-racial class issues, mental health, jealousy and more became the primary topics in the drama format sparked by a viral video from Morgan Cooper who dared to reimagine the classic. Plus, “Bel-Air” wasn’t afraid to shake up the casting, favoring actors with darker complexions while still maintaining the spirit of the original. With that kind of success, of course the second season is highly anticipated and burdened with the question of “Will it be as good as the first?”
