Exclusive: Mark Duplass is set as the male lead opposite Ellen Pompeo and Imogen Faith Reid in Orphan (working title), Hulu’s eight episode limited series starring and executive produced by Pompeo.
Written by Katie Robbins, who serves as showrunner, the series is inspired by the true story of Natalia Grace and the Midwestern couple who adopted her believing she was a little girl with dwarfism but gradually started to believe she may not be who she said she was.
Duplass will play Michael Barnett, at the time husband of Pompeo’s Kristine Barnett, and adoptive father to Natalia (Imogen Faith Reid).
In 2019, Michael (Duplass), an upbeat Midwestern dad and retail manager, was charged, along with his ex-wife Kristine (Pompeo), for the neglect and abandonment of their daughter Natalia, whom they adopted in 2010. Already in the public eye because of Kristine’s bestselling book The Spark– about raising their son Jacob,...

Was 2023 the year that the movie theater finally made a comeback? Maybe, but it was definitely the year that brought film to the forefront of the cultural conversation again.

Directed by Thomas Tancred, the film Last Stop Larrimah revolves around a real-life documentary about a man who disappeared from Larrimah without a trace. The mysterious disappearance is related to the 11 residents of the small town of Larrimah, located in the middle of nowhere in Australia. The film is an amalgamation of interviews with the residents, people in charge of the case, and other associated people. Trying to shift the blame on each other, all the residents look like possible suspects. There are zillions of similar real-life crime documentaries and series like Vanished: The Missing Person’s Project, Who Killed Jill Dando, The Devil on Trial, and others that seek to find the truths behind the disappearances. Will there be a resolution to the case of the disappearance in Larrimah? Let’s find out!

Netflix’s “Tiger King,” about a gaggle of eccentric cat breeders in Florida, was a marker of the pandemic’s dog days for us all with its March 2020 release and so most prefer the exploitative docuseries to remain a figment of the past. But various series or made-for-tv documentaries released since have attempted to huff off its formula: lifting the lid off the trash can of society for a look inside. Director Thomas Tancred’s “Last Stop Larrimah” is not quite like this, as this nearly two-hour Max documentary about the quirky townsfolk of a small locality in the Northern Territory of Australia, population 11, is never exploitative so much as endeared to its subjects. But the local color on display — and repetitiveness of detail suggestive of a one-hour-worthy film stretched to what feels like series length in one feature — indicates an HBO stab toward sparking a viral phenomenon such as...

As you might expect, news travels fast in a town of eleven people. As you also might expect, tensions can run high. Close quarters and all that. And when one of those eleven people (and his dog) go missing without a trace, finger-pointing is inevitable, especially when everyone seems to hate each other to begin with. Such is life in Last Stop Larrimah, a new HBO true crime documentary of rib-tickling misanthropy that plays like a Down Under take on a Coen Brothers fable.

Larrimah, the small Australian town that gives Thomas Tancred’s documentary its title, has a population of 11. Or, at least, it had 11 people until one, Paddy Moriarty, went missing along with his dog in 2017. A portrait of an eccentric town that almost feels like a social experiment, just as much as it’s a murder mystery, “Last Stop Larrimah” is a shaggy, fascinating tale that marries Duplass Brothers-style absurdity (they act as producers here) with the ever-popular true-crime genre to pretty enthralling results.

In Australian vernacular, a larrikin is a mischievous prankster, a loud, uncultured, badly behaved young person given to flouting convention. At 70, Paddy Moriarty hardly qualified as young, but in every other way he epitomized that national archetype, merrily stoking friction among residents of the Podunk town that gives Last Stop Larrimah its title. Even Paddy’s kelpie was a troublemaker. The disappearance of both man and mutt in December 2017 from the middle-of-nowhere Northern Territory burg, population 11, put Larrimah in the news cycle as investigative teams descended and discovered a tiny community rife with infighting.
American director Thomas Tancred makes his feature debut with this playful anatomy of a township scarcely big enough to be called that; of the unpolished eccentrics who live there; and the shadow that remains over Larrimah with the cold case of Irish émigré Moriarty.
