Originally, the director designed an interior set for the project, but this ended up being cost prohibitive for the budget. The producer, Nick Verdon, knew of a location near the village of West Peckham in Kent, outside of London, and this is where the video was shot in a single day and night.
One of the director's specific goals with this film was to take a real environment and make it look as if the setting had been recreated in a studio - manipulating a natural environment to resemble a beautifully executed but artificial set. Of course Millais painting of Ophelia was an inspiration, but other influences included the romanticized "exterior" landscapes created inside the sound stages of movie studios during the 1920's, 30's, etc. The director Rocky Schenck admits that these fantastically detailed and completely manufactured environments have always fascinated him, as did the artistry of the set designers and cinematographers who created and photographed these heightened realities. He felt that it was as if the art crew were not only duplicating what they saw in nature, but what they saw in the romantic landscape paintings of previous eras."
