Balloons For The Circus

The drama kept teasing us endlessly to what might have happened in Italy but it never revealed it. Sure, you can make some obvious assumptions but that's not as satisfying especially with the constant teasing. Makjang shows are designed to push your buttons through what's obvious from the observer perspective and this drama does exactly that but also eases the pain by making every character to have an unadjust trait or 10, including all of the leads. By doing this, it also makes it easier for the viewers to go softer on some of the wrong doings. You end up watching it to see how the car crash will end. In this case, a lot of fast and big changes happened in the last 40 minutes despite the drama having all the time in the world to approach its resolution more gracefully. Although it the drama was somewhat alright, but the harsh shift in the last 4 episodes made it really bad and unbearable. The main confrontation of the involved parties in the cafe was an example of that. The writer just wanted to amp it up as high as possible to squeeze the last dribbles of broadcast ratings. One thing I didn't like is how the drama forced every character to be connected to one another, it pushed the improbability of interconnected stories a bit too hard that it became ridiculous even for a makjang drama. If I had to pick one thing that irked me the most, it's how Da Ba's mother react differently between her daughter and Eun Gang on the suspicions of potential infidelity despite her daughter is the one doing it 10 folds harder in front of her face. A true bruh moment right there. Looking into the writer's previous projects, she's consistently decent except for a few outliers and this drama was part of these outliers.

If I had to describe it with two words it would be: disappointing and disgusting.

Warning: Spoilers
If I could rate it with 0 I would've done that gladly, it was some twisted plot when the cheaters get their happy ending together, they even tried to make the victim a cruel witch who deserves everything that happened to her!

The message conveyed by this drama is that if you're poor it's alright to do everything to get what the others have, even if that other person is your best friend for 20 years it's ok to destroy her business to get a little money, and it's ok to sleep with her husband because of jealousy, I don't know what the writers were thinking by writing this sorry excuse of a story, but the ending was really disappointing, disgusting even.

Enjoyed every minute of it

This is a completely involving and extremely entertaining family drama that has adultery and marital problems as the theme. This series has 20 longish episodes so it isn't dragged out as the usual family drama with 40 or more episodes. This is like a combination of Love Marriage and Divorce and Parasite which it openly acknowledges. Yet there is nothing over the top, repetitive or unrealistic - it's all possible. Three affairs take place. The people are all interconnected. Firstly the doctor and his wife's best friend. Then the best friend's sister with an older married man who is the brother in law of the doctor and the young sister of the best friend. Finally the doctor's sister and an the best friend's uncle.

There are several aspects that make this show superb and a cut above the rest. Firstly the adultery aspect. The detail and effects on the family and psychological insights in which it shows make this show endlessly fascinating and thrilling - will they get caught and when they get caught the blow up. I love how it shows both sides, the cheaters and the cheated on and the reasons for both. It doesn't make villains of the cheaters like World of the Married. They all have their reasons and there is some element of sympathy for them.

The family drama part of the show has some of the nastiest mother in laws and mothers in the kdrama world. The Parasite element is the contrast of the haves and the have nots and how they think of each other and treat each other. The movie Parasite was just a movie and this series enables a longer more detailed treatment of a fascinating subject of the relationship of the 2 classes. There are some climax scenes in ep 12-14 that are just among the best in kdrama. The directing is just superb throughout.

Now the cast. The female leads are both lovely and act so well. The stunningly beautiful Seo Ji Hye has the meatiest role of her career since Crash Landing Well done playing the flawed heroine. No matter what bad stuff she does I can't help but root for her. Hong Soo Hyun is convincing and subtle in her performance. The two actresses play such a complex friendship with all the jealousies and caring to perfection. Both award winning. Jung Yoo Min is a standout lovely and passionate headstrong young woman in love with an older man. The men are great too Lee Sang Woo and Lee Sung Jae are perfectly cast. The three affairs will keep you spellbound and shouting at the screen till the end.

There are some shows you wish wouldn't end and this is one of them. Simply superbly written acted and directed.

This kdrama did not convince me at all

If what you are looking for is a series where lies and infidelity are rewarded without paying the consequences, it is the one. I don't know what message the writers wanted to convey, but I think it was not successful.

It is seen that the actors are all professionals, there is no doubt about that but the development of the characters is for the worse, no matter how much I tried to connect with the main character, I couldn't. This story only caused me frustration and anger haha, it really is a very toxic series. I do not recommend it.

There are better series of this genre, I do not recommend it.
