Paris-based Urban Sales has boarded Diego Lerman’s “The Substitute” (“El Suplente”) which will have its world premiere at Toronto followed by San Sebastian.
“The Substitute” tells the story of Lucio (Minujín), a prestigious university professor who starts working as a substitute teacher at a high school in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, where he grew up. Through tales, novels and poetry, he tries to distract his class from the harsh reality of their everyday lives. But soon, he must step out of his professional duties when Dylan, one of his students, is threatened by a local drug kingpin.
One of Argentina’s leading filmmakers, Lerman won this year’s Locarno’s Silver Leopard award for “Suddenly.” He’s best known for directing “A Sort of Family” which played at Toronto, won best screenplay at San Sebastian and was acquired by Netflix; as well as “Refugiado” and “Invisible” which played...

“Schmigadoon!” burst onto Apple TV+ to deliver musical comedy heaven during a time in the pandemic where live performance was still impossible to find. With Broadway temporarily shuttered, a cast of seasoned theater performers instead stormed our TV screens. They sang songs that were a heart-warming homage to classic musicals of the 1940s and gave a weary world a much needed boost of joy.

“Holy shit, I’m Gary.”
Standing inside the oval office, carrying a brown (knock-off) Leviathan, the magnitude of my situation suddenly dawned on me: I was Gary Walsh, Tony Hale’s character on “Veep” who serves as Selina Meyers’ “body man,” biggest supporter, and asexual second-half.
Suddenly, I felt like a 12-year-old boy trapped inside the body of a 12-year-old girl.
But I needed to get over my newfound role and figure out how to use my knowledge of Gary to help the team. The clock was ticking, and we needed to open the ballot box, count the votes, and help Selina Meyer win the presidency before time expired.

It’s becoming quite obvious that Fox is benefiting greatly from nostalgia as of late. Having recently revived classics such as The X-Files and 24 as limited engagements, I’m quite pleased that the next series to be resurrected is that of Prison Break, one of the shows that helped make the serialized approach an industry standard.
Originally having premiered in 2005, Paul Scheuring’s nail-biter of a creation told the story of two brothers – Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) – who got caught up in a conspiracy that went straight to the top. Over the course of four seasons, they escaped from two separate prisons, evaded the feds and unraveled various sinister plots. Not only that, but it served as the breakout roles (pun intended) for the likes of Miller, Robert Knepper and several others, as well as later being adapted to a video game.

An arson insurance scam attempt gone tragically wrong leaves low-rent criminal Elvis Martini (Nickola Shreli) with little to hold onto besides his young daughter Lena (Ava Simony) in Cash Only. Unfortunately, he also has little to provide her despite two years having passed since the incident. Money woes mount as Albanian bookies who’ve given him the benefit of the doubt for too long seek what’s owed and the bank threatens to foreclose on his five-unit apartment complex—his only means of income (when his tenants pay). He and Lena have four weeks to procure funds before they’re on the streets so the drive to squeeze his squatters for rent intensifies until Elvis’ surveillance cameras expose how one resident is stashing more than enough cash to ease his struggle for good.

"We're here to rob the bank... Don't be a hero!" Lionsgate has debuted an official Us trailer for American Heist, an action-thriller-drama from Armenian filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan starring Adrien Brody and Hayden Christensen as brothers with troubled pasts who get dragged into another bank robbery. It's yet another bank robbers need to leave their past but get caught up in one more job kind of movie, complete with the face mask heist and everything. Jordana Brewster, Tory Kittles and Akon also star in the film. It honestly doesn't look that great, yet another bland version of this same old story, but you never know. Here's the new Us trailer for Sarik Andreasyan's American Heist, in high def originally from Apple: If you're feeling like you've seen some of this before, we also ran an international trailer late last year. "Banks are an essential threat to our democracy, so consider this justice." After winning an Academy Award for The Pianist, it's unfortunate that the career of Adrien Brody has mostly derailed. I couldn't even tell you the last time I saw a great movie with Brody in it, and that doesn't look to change with this international trailer for the Tiff selected American Heist. All the cliches of a crime thriller are on display, and while Hayden Christensen doesn't seem all that bad for once, this just looks like it's trying to be Heat meets Fast Five (they even got Jordana Brewster on board), but not nearly as good as either. Here's the international trailer for Sarik Andreasyan's American Heist from Voltage Pictures: American Heist is directed by Armenian filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan and written by Raul Inglis (Transparency, Suddenly). With The Wolf Of Wall Street in cinemas now, Ryan looks at how Martin Scorsese's drama fits into his confrontational style of filmmaking...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for The Wolf Of Wall Street.
There are numerous ways you can react to a situation that makes you angry. You can try to ignore it. You can respond to it with equal aggression. Or, like Martin Scorsese does with his latest film, The Wolf Of Wall Street, you can mock it savagely.
In terms of satire, The Wolf Of Wall Street is akin to two great works from the 60s - Joseph Heller's novel Catch-22 (1961), and Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove (1964). All three approach a dark subject matter with cutting, ironic humour. Catch-22 depicts war as collective insanity, where young men cheerfully go to die while their superiors squabble over rank and medals.

Grand Theft Auto V is the biggest and messiest game I’ve played in years. It’s a quieter Grand Theft Auto but also a louder Grand Theft Auto, a more mature Grand Theft Auto and a shockingly adolescent Grand Theft Auto. It’s set in a big huge FauxCal where Los Angeles is a 10-minute drive from Lake Tahoe and the policemen actually notice when you break traffic laws. Check out 5 new clips from Dominic Purcell starrer Assault on Wall Street, also with Erin Karpluk, John Heard, Edward Furlong, Keith David, Eric Roberts and Michael Paré. Uwe Boll directs the action thriller which looks well...watch and see for yourself. Dan Clarke and Shawn Williamson produce. Personally, with this director on board, I'm not too keen after abominations like Bloodrayne, Far Cry, Postal and let's not forget the cherry on top - Alone in the Dark. I do like Dominic Purcell as an actor though. So, if you're up for that, then give it a view. Okay, maybe not full-scale. It’s essentially “Prison Break’s” Dominic Purcell and an assault rifle going around killing everyone in suits cause they’re obviously eeeeeeevil. In terms of Uwe Boll moviemaking, that’s kinda like a full-scale assault. (Yeah, let’s go with that…) If the film is supposed to pander to the whole Occupy Wall Street movement, it’s probably about a year too late. As a straight-up action movie, it doesn’t look entirely bad, and it did cast right with Eric Roberts playing one of the slimy evil guys in suits. I don’t know what Edward Furlong is doing in there, though. Jim is an average New Yorker living a peaceful life with a well paying job and a loving family. The new movie from the director of Blue Valentine is a modern morality tale underpinned by outstanding central performances
Brother Tied, the first film by Derek Cianfrance, now aged 39, was made 15 years ago and apparently remains in some legal limbo, unreleased and unseen. His second film, Blue Valentine, released in 2010, attracted considerable attention for the outstanding performances of Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as respectively a blue-collar worker and the middle-class medical student who gives up her studies to marry him. I like Purcell as an actor, with credits for Prison Break, films like Blade: Trinity, Primeval and Straw Dogs, I wish I could say the same for the director's attempts at the helm. We're talking films like Alone in the Dark, Bloodrayne, In the Name of the King, Far Cry and more. At least there's no White House involved here. In any case, I wish it luck.
