When You're Too Lazy To Channel Surf Daytime TV
daniel-mannouch9 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Sons of Liberty (UK release title: Black Ops Assault) was a DVD i picked up in Poundland four years ago, watched once, but my interest was won over to Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance i was playing on the PS2, slid back on my shelf and forgot i owned, until this very moment.

Somehow, i still vividly remember what drew me to purchase this clunker from everyone's favourite high street staple. The ultra generic case and slipcover art already sent my psychotronic senses a tingling, but it was the insane blurb on the back that sealed the deal. Promises swirled my head of "stolen nuclear materials", "a serial killer" who is "torturing women, leaving their bodies a mangled mess of scars and symbols", "a top secret unit, known as SOL" struggling to "find the balance between duty and their personal lives" and "a deadly cadre of mercenaries, an arms dealer, a rouge IRA soldier, an assassin, and a mastermind whose motivations blur the line between terrorist and revolutionary".

What i find now upon my second barely memorised viewing of Sons of Liberty is that i am watching a collage of serialised tv mediocrity. We have The Unit, CSI and Homeland minus the necessary runtime to build substance around these basic set ups. Three concepts don't make a diverse script and i am aware of the too many cooks situation of the screenplay, however credits are not needed to suss this problem out in the first place.

Sons of Liberty is irritating for me because Drew Hall knows where to place the camera (excluding some hideous Go Pro P.O.V's, but hey, early days) and max optimise his budget. This DOES look like a $2,000,000 film, i'd be glad to say even more. His assured style is painful to watch when covering material that is so boring, so bafflingly sub-par. How does a film featuring nuclear weapons, an elite assassin, a serial killing terrorist mastermind, black ops and the ***damn illuminati be so thoroughly un-engaging? The acting i guess is below average, but not bad, just unremarkable, auto-pilot. The disjointed editing is obviously trying to seal up the cracks in both plot and lack of coverage (i said Hall knew where to put the camera, not how often) and the music is just there. Sound design is good, had to be, otherwise the cuts would really be jarring.

That's another irritating thing. This film just barely balances out. Nowhere near bad, but far from good either. The serial killing sequences were the best staged and acted out of the entire film and gave Sons of Liberty some fleeting character, so i can't even say that the whole thing was just meh.

Think Undefeatable (1994), in fact, think all of Godfrey Ho's 90's work, only without the gaudy fashion and over acting. Yep, that'll do it.

Sons of Liberty is a thoroughly average product of creative gridlock, less Alien vs Predator and more Predator '18.

WE'RE OSCAR MIKE IN TWENTY MINUTES
nogodnomasters5 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a pseudo-history lesson during the opening credits. It starts in 1302 with the founding of the Ordo Mundi and in 1765 the Sons of Liberty were founded with the Tea Party complete with a line about refreshing from time to time. We jump to Australia...and I am not sure how that played in and then a human clone in 1974 who takes over the 1302 order, the 1980 October Surprise, and then some stolen yellow cake. Your job Mr. Hall is to combine all this together in one story and then direct it. Good Luck.

It seems the bad guys which appear to be part of this order wants to get U-235 and create some sort of bomb to explode...somewhere a "micro-nuclear terrorist threat.". Our hero group is actually Homeland Security. They are following the trail of items being bought while investigating the murder of girls with markings (numbers?) carved into them.

Tom (Adam Cardon) is our good guy on a crutch, but don't fret, his newly recruited girlfriend who is scientist, small arms expert, and boxer can help out as a new special agent.

I loved the opening. Good early plot points, okay graphics, and decent soundtrack. However after that, the plot seemed to have drifted all over the place, possibly from having too many script writers...too many chefs. It appears they had either a professional adviser or did bother to Goggle stuff, as they had most of the key words and phrases, but Co-65 doesn't exist on the "Chart of the Nuclides" and would have a 1-2 second half-life if it did (i.e. they are not buying it and having it shipped.) U-235 does not have a "gravitational signature" but does emit an 80 kev photon.

This is listed as action sci-fi. It seems one guy is a clone. I am not sure what he does. That is the extent of the "sci-fi" element. There is some action, but it is more drama than action. My bore factor crept up.

No f-bombs, sex, or nudity.

Shows some real promise, acting and pacing let it down

You can always appreciate a moviemaker's ability to craft a film/story their passionate about from a low end budget as it can't be easy to suppress all your ideas to the financial constraint you're under. Director Drew Hall has so far throughout his short career crafted 3 feature length movies under budgets that for a Hollywood tentpole would be barely enough to cover catering and Sons of Liberty (the 3rd entry into a series of films) showcases a director that deserves to be given more play money to craft something matching his undeniable vision.

To say that Sons of Liberty is a good film would be a lie, but to say it lacks creativity and moments of genuine movie-making skill would be a disservice to a film that at times shuns it's low end budget and becomes a solidly entertaining action/thriller that a singular acting spark would of ignited into being a real 90 minute blast. Hall is at his best when the action takes hold yet the film is let down by some truly mediocre acting turns from the leads and whenever the films dialogue takes on full effect you can feel the glaze covering your eyes as a lot of scientific talk and unneeded backstories take a hold on proceedings.

Sons of Liberty features some beyond bland lead turns from main players Adam Cardon and Catalina Soto-Aguilar and when the talking starts there so far too many charisma free conversations that test the patience of the viewer. With actors on board with even half the charisma of these two leads the film would of benefited greatly and the confusion about why people are doing what they're doing would've been lessoned for throughout the film the viewer will find themselves lost in a tale that perhaps was throwing in to many things at once (murders, stolen weapon parts) rather than focusing on a more streamlined plot.

After watching Sons of Liberty I do certainly look forward to what director Drew Hall comes up with next (his new thriller Convergence looks a lively type) and his ability behind the camera seems assured even is his material and actors are not quite there yet. Sons of Liberty may feel like TV movie making personified but there are certainly a lot more terrible movies out there at the moment, and most of them with quadruple the budget. Promising stuff, but still a way to go.

Don't waste your time, life is to precious
davidbuildnets2 July 2016
Horrible. Yes, there was action, but even that was pretty bad. There was so much that must have ended up on the cutting room floor or still in the writers head. It begins with a guy in a hospital bed after something went wrong on a special Op. You have no idea what that was or why it was relevant to the story. The main story is about some Join task force of egg heads and special ops guys. But the only reason I know that is because I read the summary before watching it. There is never an explanation of the team, who's on it or why. You can kind of pick some of that up along the way, but what's the point of having this team if nobody even explains the team. There is a whole set of bad guys, but several have different agenda's including some kind of Occult stuff, but that is never really explored or explained. Clearly it leaves room for sequels, to the extent that they spend more time on that than the actual story. But let's hope this movie just dies instead. If it wasn't free on Amazon Prime, I'd sue to get my money back.

Questionable ratings.

Looks like they've padded their own ratings on this one. Check the ratings breakdown. No way in hell this movie is a 10.

If James Nguyen wrote a nuclear thriller...
smkellat6 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
At various points the male lead in this was acting more like he should've been in Birdemic or Julie & Jack. This could be a good candidate for riffing by the latest iteration of Mystery Science Theater 3000 in the Gizmoplex. There were so many parts that were played for dramatic response that just did not stick the landing.

Life was way more optimistic in 2013 compared to the world we occupy in 2023. After the meltdown at the ports over the past few years the ports scene in this was just pure fantasy. Our government is also not nearly that efficient. Suspension of disbelief was just strained way too hard.

At least Elyse Levesque plays a wonderful villain in this.

Action packed, plot approved
gaudet-stephen4 September 2014
This movie is full of great action sequences and great performances. I went in to it thinking that it was going to be of the so-bad-its-good club, but the tense, tight action had me on the edge of my seat. The plot was believable and mostly stayed out of the way. The only bad side was the number of villains made the motivations a little hard to follow. The main villain did a great job, however, so it is a minor quibble. Also, the science stuff was a little over done but not so much that it distracted from the main thrust of the movie. I saw the extended version, so some or all of my complaints might have been edited out of the retail version. Final say: you could do much worse with your Saturday night than watching this movie, and it is easily worth the few dollar rental fee.

Not what I expected - In a great way
boilerupben1 September 2014
I saw this film at a festival and I really enjoyed it. It wasn't what I expected at all. Sure it has it's problems for an indie film, but the story completely outweighs any issues. Action scenes were very well done for a limited budget and definitely didn't feel like regular old straight to video type stuff. The acting is pretty good wit ha few familiar faces. I will say though, and I don't know if this is a problem or not, but you have to pay attention. It's not a put it on the background kind of movie. I did notice that it's listed as sci fi action, I would personally put it more into the military fiction realm. It did leave me wondering what's next.

Good stuff: Action was solid for this genre Cinematography was awesome Acting was pretty good Better than normal straight to video type movie

Bad stuff: Does require your attention Some of the dialog feels like you need a degree to understand it (though it's not that important) There were a few unnecessary scenes
