If you are the 1 in 100...

This film certainly does not have not have the highest production values, a name cast or an audience friendly plot. What it does have is intrigue and originality. It certainly will not please people who like traditional storytelling with an ending all tied up in a bow (although different, Primer comes to mind).

The story is at first confusing, illogical and frustrating. I initially assumed the plot was a jumbled mess and almost turned off a number of times. As the movie progressed and as my confused thoughts began to make sense, I really enjoyed the game being played with the viewer. The payoff, however, was so good I re-watched the movie to ensure I understood what had happening (and I think I understand most of it now). It's always a bonus when a repeat viewing offers even more than the initial viewing. It would be fair to say that this flick, while short on budget is dripping with ideas.

I am the 1 in 100 that enjoys movies like Deceit. Don't even bother if low-budget, indie thinkers aren't your thing. That said, if you pass, you won't know what you're missing.

My brain hurts

I like small films that don't try to compete with Hollywood. Deceit fits this category. It is not entirely successful but it does have lots to like. Then again, some elements are a hot mess. I thought it was too confusing and some of the acting was pretty average (but the girl playing the female lead was attractive). The storyline really did my head in and even after discussing it, I am none the wiser on certain events. It was pointed out to me that perhaps that's the way it's supposed to be. That's all well and fine but this type of film really fries my brain. On the plus side, the film looked professionally shot when compared to other small films and it held my interest. In all honesty, i'd give this film a 6 but my gf rated it an 8 so I split the difference.

Where do I start?

Warning: Spoilers
Don't know if this is a spoiler but thought a warning would be a good idea as the film relies on a certain technique to tell a twisty and confusing story. I thought it used the main script idea from Memento with a slight twist. Although I watched the whole thing mainly cos I was trying and very much failing to understand the story, can't say I particularly like these "interesting" films. Didn't much care for Memento either. Both films were hard work just to keep up. While I'm here, who the hell killed the old conman, what's with that faked hold up and how just many times is the main guy shot for real?!? I have not one clue.
