Pretty good for a short film
Horst_In_Translation16 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, you should not be confused by this film's title: "I, Pet Goat II" This is not a sequel I think. And things are not what they seem to be like with the title, but also with the film in general. it starts of a bit simple with cartoon characters of recent American Presidents, but gets better quickly when the film drifts completely into fiction. No dialogue needed here to make a good animated short film. The music fits nicely and it is quite an atmospheric watch. It's a very experimental work and these 7 minutes have no congruent story or plot really. It's more a collection of impressions. I thought the animation was really well done and this got me curious about future works by the Canadian writer and director Louis Lefebvre, who made this basically as a one-man project. I am not so sure if the credit on his body of work for one of the "Lord of the Rings" films is correct, but if so, this would certainly be quite a big thing, even if his contribution was probably only minor. Anyway, back to this one here. It's a good watch for lovers of animated movies and I recommend it.

A fascinating watching experience Warning: Spoilers
Since its release, I Pet Goat II had been target on many endless online discussions that continue to this very day, mostly concerning to its meaning, and if it has a "prediction" for the imminent future of mankind.

This isn't surprising, considering the high amount of imagery related with conspiracy theories displayed here, not to mention the heavy religious symbolism; but even without a previous knowledge of the aftermentioned theories, the short is still very interesting to watch, mostly thanks to its stylish animation and eerie atmosphere.

There are many background details that can only be appreciated after some rewatchs; and even when I have already seen several times, it still retains the same mysterious aura, as some sort of visual riddle open to many different kind of interpretations.

Visually and thematically striking and full of detail even if the viewer may not swallow a word of it

I came to this short film with absolutely no clue as to its content – not the theme, not the genre, not even if it was an animation or not. The opening of the film sees a George Bush figure in a dunce cap in a classroom – (which is unmistakably "that" classroom) and we hear one of his Bushisms played as he tap dances and entertains. At this point I thought this would be a lazy piece mocking Bush since this is how it had looked to me at first glance. This impression lasted seconds though as I was thrown into an 8 minute ride of symbolism, challenging images and chaos on my way to a feeling of "what the hell did I just watch". And I'm sure I'm not alone.

The good thing is that you will jump right back into this film – not to try to figure it out, but rather to figure out how it makes you feel and why. With 9/11 imagery, politicians as entertainers/distracters for children, Bin Laden and an army of humanoid bombs, Al Qaeda as a wing of the CIA, religious figures and deities, humans suffering under control of TV screens directly plugged into their brains and lots of Illuminati symbols, this is a short film that has much more in it than the simple title suggests.

The best way to watch is to try to set aside your views on such things as Illuminati, religion and politics and let the film have its time because even in terms of "spot the reference", this is something you'll want to watch again. To give examples – your eye will go to Bin Laden on a boat sailing against America and instinctively it made me feel uncomfortable that he would be shown in this way – on second viewings I saw the human weapons behind him but also the CIA badge on his jacket. Likewise even on the opening scenes it is worth pausing and looking around behind the Bush caricature to see the detail of an "evolution" chart which is the norm is schools but this one seems to contain an "enlightenment" stage, while on the blackboard the children appear to be playing hangman with the word evolution being spelt out. Heck it even took me a while to spot that the goat in the opening few second was not a production company logo as I first thought, but actually in a detainment camp, boxed up, with a bar code on its forehead, and of course the title is a reference to the children's book that Bush was reading while planes flew into the towers in New York on 11th September.

Even with slower viewings there is so much in this short film to catch that I know most of it still went over my head. Whether you agree with the material or just laugh at it for its conspiracy theory nuttery, it has to be applauded for the construct and the detail; after all, Pixar put some background pop culture references in their films and everyone is falling over themselves with praise, so this short deserves the same. It is worth saying that animation is also beautiful – polished, professional and full of small detail. Content wise it may well be an old man on the bus babbling about lizards and third eyes, but it is fascinating and beautiful to watch.

Personally I thought some of the ideas within the film were nonsense (but then, I'm a goat in a box, so what do I know) and some of the images and themes made me feel uncomfortable with their use, but this is fine – it is good to have a short that grabs you, overwhelms, challenges and makes you think – even if the outcome of those thoughts might be "yeah...but no".

I hate the antichrist

The ongoing pandemic descents to worse, 7/10 of earth receive the vaccine, economy collapses and a small war breaks between west and east. The masses cries out for help..a savior figure arrives and ends the affliction, but demands worship (the jab was just symbolic mark ) , slains the leftovers and the masses praise it.

Yet to see something equal this short's essence

One of the most mysterious and visually fascinating shorts I have seen in my life. It's been over 10 years since its release and the brilliant craftsmanship behind this short is astounding. Not only is the art style so unique and flowing with life, but each frame is oozing with rich symbolic meaning. Truly, this short is well worth a watch; perhaps several to just begin diggin at the surface of its beauty. This is an excellent example of how you can say so much without any words. The imagery and the music dance in unison. All elements seem to work in such good synchronicity to create such a compelling short film. What are you waiting for!

Warning: Spoilers
How come no one has posted any other critiques? Hm.

Is it because the IMDb system won't let me post unless I write ten lines? That's what they tell me.. I'm not really sure anyone will ever read this but I'm writing it anyway. This looks like a precisely calculated, modestly budgeted, production. With at least 8 people closely working together to get this thing made.

I love it, and I don't believe anything I've heard about it. Not that it would matter.

Oh damn. IMDb Bot says I must write more. OK, well, this is an interesting film. Like a child's fever induced nightmare. So full of core archetypes it's physically painful to see the child suffering.

Very crafted, and calculated. The cuts are deep.

wake up purpose
Kirpianuscus24 February 2024
A forest of cultural references and symbols, from American politicians to gods of different religions, the remind of influence of television and the levels of crisis defining the near reality.

And, sure, the Savior at the end of times , in a silent, destroyed world , with burning foots .

Easy to define it provocative. Or beautiful. Or powerful. Or , just religious short animation.

Easy to define your moral perspective served by it.

But the most important trait of I, Pet Goat II , I supposed, is the effort to wake up the audience. Difficult to say about result but , obvious, it is just a short animation who, in high measure, just matters. And that is the significant, real significant fact about it. .
