The Devil licking the floor when Arcadio's food falls is a representation of the popular Mexican saying "ya lo chupó el Diablo" ("the Devil already licked it"), used when someone accidentally throws food to the floor.

Julia Marta Velázquez, who plays "Grandma" in this film, is the director's grandmother. Unfortunately she died before the film's completion only being able to watch an almost finished version of the film.
Two hedgehogs were used in the film. Arcadia is the hedgehog actress and Fanstasmita was the hedgehog used to make the sound effects.
One of the main influences for this movie was Carlos Saura's "Cria!".
