This is one of the weakest episodes I've seen, unfortunately

Warning: Spoilers
I've been watching every episode in order and right now this is the latest one I've watched. I enjoy most of the entire cast and in previous episodes, they've all seen for the most point enjoyable. This episode contained a lot of conflict between regular characters and returning characters that seemed a bit off-putting to me (Dom's ex being the brunt for the most part). His tearing up a letter she wrote at the very end without even reading it seemed a bit overdone for someone who is usually one of the more likeable characters (meaning Dom) in the cast).

Also, something that bugged me greatly is that Jeremy sent the doorkeeper of the theater to his death (not on purpose, but still) by having him go clean a dressing room that he clearly wasn't keen on cleaning and still was reluctant when bribed. Yet away the doorkeeper went to clean that dressing room and he ended up dead on the floor as a result. What was Jeremy's reaction to learning that his actions led to the death of another person? We'll never know because Jeremy didn't appear once more in the episode after that. He had to have known the doorkeeper was killed, but it will just have to be imagined that Jeremy shrugged when told and quickly went back to sipping large amounts of gin on the back patio of his mansion. I can't think of any other series or movies where a completely innocent character died as a result of someone else's order and that fact not even be brought up afterwards at some point. Kudos to the writers of Madame Blanc for casually red-shirting (Star Trek reference) a character like that. The main character, Jean White (Madame Blanc if you will) also had an underwhelming ending scene at the end when she's searching for a very expensive faberge egg with her former-enemy-turned-friend and when learning where the egg (which wasn't an egg after all) was, showed just a subtle amount of excitement. Maybe because the treasure wouldn't be hers is why Jean seemed a bit "meh" about the find, but finding that treasure was one of the show's subplots and it seemed a bit anticlimatic. I also think Dom did a dumb thing by quickly ripping up the letter his ex had written. It could have been important like that she has just 6 months left to live. It could have also been a sincere apology and her wishing him and their daughter all the best. Or there could have been a letter just for their daughter to forgive her. If it was Georgina just trying to manipulate him again, then rip up the letter.... AFTER reading it. Okay, review done, lol. I hope the rest of the season is stronger and more engaging than this one.

Great episode

I got hooked on this episode right from the start. There was good use of regular and some recurring characters and I loved the last few scenes - as usual, there was a real sense of empathy for everyone (obviously not everything they do) which in many ways is what makes this series. Plus of course the slow-cooker relationship of Jean & Dom makes a nice change from the microwave sex lives in most dramas. As much as I prefer to watch cross-generational TV, this show is better without the teens as they were too stereotypical, and we need more TV that focuses on the over 45s like this does. Last week was a bit boring so I was in half a mind to give up, but this one reeled me right back in.

Episode 2.3

Murder in the theatre some years apart. In 1974, British actress Genevieve Harris was killed in Sainte Victoire's theatre.

The murder remains unsolved. When a key member of the theatre's committee dies. Her daughter Vivienne comes to Jean White when she is told that her actual mother was Genevieve Harris. The other woman was her aunt.

Jean White wants to reinvestigate the murder case on Vivienne's behalf. It turns out to be more than a murder hunt. It is also a treasure hunt hidden by Genevieve Harris somewhere in the Sainte Victoire's theatre.

A more recent death in the theatre indicates that the same killer has struck. Maybe the murders were due to someone looking for the valuable treasure thought to be a Faberge egg

Despite some red herrings and some padding. This was a weak mystery, Jeremy Lloyd James spotting something early on very much gave the murderer's identity away.

Appallingly episode

Warning: Spoilers
This series is getting worse as it goes along. The only upside to this episode was a guest appearance by Elizabeth Borgnine (Death in Paradise fame). She was a minor part and not used effectively. Sue Vincent, co writer and one of leads is a terrible actor and no attempt has been made to even dirty her overalls up, it is a pointless character, performed poorly.

The storyline this time was incredibly weak, with them asking us to believe that the rare treasure had been sat in a load of fake flowers for 47 years, never dusted and never replaced.

The whole programme failed dismally to engage the audience at all.

Weak episode in a weak season
MsMisto26 February 2023
I liked the first season much better than this one so far (the Christmas episode was the best one). It seems to have lost its way. There's no sense of real drama or tension. The plot of this one was absolutely ridiculous as was the finale. It's like all the characters have gone flat as has the writing. There was a wonderful overall arc in season 1 but none in season 2. There was a great sense of camaraderie last season but none this season. And the garage owner with the clean overalls? Not a spot of grease or oil in sight? Seriously? The incongruous music continues to annoy me, from the opening theme song to the background music during the show. It's grating.
