When looking at a director’s canon upon its completion and in its entirety, the final piece of work is more often than not a key text in the broader understanding of the respective oeuvre. Be it something as relatively modern as Robert Altman’s masterpiece A Prairie Home Companion or a classic gem like the underrated Fritz Lang picture The Thousand Eyes Of Doctor Mabuse, these career-capping works may not be the director’s greatest achievement, but they see the director at a defining moment in their career.
However, few “final films” may be as singularly important in a director’s career as the one that would close out Robert Bresson’s legendary life, L’argent.
Now available on Criterion DVD and Blu-ray, L’argent tells the story of not so much a living character as it does an entity that runs roughshot over the lives of many. Similar...

This time on the podcast, Ryan is joined by Arik Devens to discuss Fritz Lang’s The Testament of Dr. Mabuse.
Locked away in an asylum for a decade and teetering between life and death, the criminal mastermind Doctor Mabuse (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) has scribbled his last will and testament: a manifesto establishing a future empire of crime. When the document’s nefarious writings start leading to terrifying parallels in reality, it’s up to Berlin’s star detective, Inspector Lohmann (Otto Wernicke, reprising his role from M) to connect the most fragmented, maddening clues in a case unlike any other.

Be with the first exclusive set visit — here & Now — on FM.com with dispatches and teasers until the new Doctor Mabuse: II sequel that is currently under production wraps. (And: look forward to a special announcement here from Mc for FM at Comic-con.)
FM first discovered Ansel Faraj and his first Doctor Mabuse at the movie’s World Premiere on Coronado Island, CA, at the Coronado Village Theatre on April 27. The audience was enthralled by the dark and haunting handmade film, and perhaps not a little surprised that a man of barely drinking age helmed this intelligent, weirdly troubling, claustrophobic, quasi-detective story of evil, seemingly set in some period place in a parallel universe, though one disturbingly resembling our own.
What makes it work? Jerry Lacy… Those eyes…
Jerry Lacy Is Doctor Mabuse, and with his eyes alone he brings the evil.

Lang is one of Faraj's major influences, alongside legendary gothic soap opera Dark Shadows has also affected Faraj's work. Tipping his hat to the latter, Jerry Lacy (beloved by Ark Shadows fans as the villainous Reverend Trask) plays Mabuse, himself. Kathryn Leigh Scott and Lara Parker, two of Shadows' most iconic leading ladies,co-star, with Scott playing Madame Von Harbou (named after Fritz Lang's wife).
"Inspired by the character created by Norbert Jaques, the notorious supervillain returns to the screen in this new original tale about the mysterious 'man behind the curtain.' Don't let him into your mind," says Faraj.
