Honestly quite decent

Having picked the DVD up in Poundland, I had pretty low expectations for a film that described itself as "Goodfellas meets Lock Stock", the film is nothing like those two films, and that's a good thing.

The film is fairly well made despite its obviously low budget. Being under 65 minutes, the film is fairly well paced and I was never bored while watching it.

Performances were decent and fairly believable. The characters had some depth but could have been fleshed out more.

Visually the film looks decent. Shot in black and white, the film doesn't have that obvious digital look and awful looking colour seen in many other low budget films, I think being in black and white helped that.

Story wise it's fine for something that's just over an hour long but would have been thin if it was any longer.

Overall it's a decent little film that deserves more recognition than it's currently getting.

Warning: Spoilers
Dig Your Own Grave from 2013 displays many of the hallmarks of late 90s, early 2000s UK crime filmmaking. It has an experimental style, the dialogue is poetic in a most superfluous fashion and the comedy is pitch black and aimless.

What saves Dig Your Own Grave however is an all round good cast and some impressive storytelling, turning the film a great recession era parable. The B&W cinematography is bold and your mileage may vary. However, the shots are well framed enough to make it work in my opinion. The biggest grip I have with this film is that the majority of the characters are obnoxious whose presence becomes grating in the long run. However, since the long run is sixty three minutes in this case, that can be easily overseen.

Dig your Own Grave is short, sharp and inventive. All things considered, it's a hidden gem of direct to DVD UK crime film making and I can easily recommend it to fans of UK crime cinema and British independent cinema in general.
