Families & Secrets
chenp-547084 May 2024
For those that are unfamiliar or familiar with, there have been some controversies surrounding the movie which includes undeclared scenes and sexual assault allegations between the cast and production during the filmmaking. I acknowledge the controversies which are pretty bad but I try my best to go with the mindset of separating the art from the artist.

As a whole, stories about families, secrets, discovery, and past aren't stories that are grand and have been explored in the past. Filmmaker Catherine Corsini doesn't offer anything too special with it's narrative and direction, but the colorful camerawork, strong performances and chemistry, and interactions between the characters helped the movie to feel engaging and meaningful.

The colorful camerawork, some interesting themes, and characters interactions felt genuine and engaging to observe with emotions and secrets explored. All of the performances are great and the uses of sound designs are really good. As mentioned, the narrative isn't special as it does full into some cliches and eventually felt a bit lost with what it really wants to be. Including some characters feeling a little underdeveloped.

Overall, if you enjoy watching stories about secrets, families, and past, this would be for you.

Worst

Sleepy, nonsense, with too many boring and meaningless long shots. The cinematography was boring and stiff. Quite boring waste of time and money at triple speed to watch, short-sighted, trivial, tasteless, lengthy. Precisely this is just another commercial that been originated by vomit tobacco company. Speechless, so embarrassing, horrible, ridiculous, the director unbridled cheapening of time not only caused great physical and mental discomfort to the audience, do nothing just smoking only, meaningless, fainted, terrible, if don't know how to make a film, just donate money, minus ten for rating.

Faultless kitchen-sink drama

Nice to see some proper cinema. There is so much garbage these days; especially from the US but a lot of other countries taking lead from the US think it is OK to make half-baked pieces and release them

Here it is the opposite

It is sheer brilliance on all levels

The storyline is ace: mum returns to Corsica she had fled 15 years previous as her husband a Corsican was smothering her with his culture and not giving her space. So she took the babies ran away to Paris; he goes in pursuit and rams his car into a tree end of ...

So now the mum returns (the ENG title is wrong not homecoming but "Going Back" it should be it was never her home anyway probably translated by AI) now the girls are 15 and 18 played by Esther Gohourou and Suzy Bemba; the former especially shines on that screen the latter pulls her weight she is the brains of the family student at star school Sciences Po but sniffy about her origins; she wants a part of the pie and sees her background as a serious brake on that plan

The mum has come to work as a nanny for a family of Champagne socialists played by 2 of the best French actors of the last 30 years. The mum a lawyer is Virginie Ledoyen yes she from The Beach (2000) all those years ago and the dad is Denis Podalydès always a pleasure; now who would not want those parents???

The eldest starts a lesbian tryst with the daughter of the house a pouty and excellent Lomane de Dietrich

It is set in the summer so we have Corsica on steroids as a backdrop

The youngest troubled daughter strikes a "relationship" with a local Corsican replicating the mum's trajectory; there is a lot of emotion family secrets etc etc peppering the entire tale

It is faultless on all levels script acting setting rhythm. Simply adored it Only slight grumble. The mum is French African. The dad was meant to be a white Corsican. But the daughters are even more Senegalese-looking than the mum. WE see this more and more in films everywhere. Is it a Woke thing? Have genetics been cancelled too? In French films we see a lot of ace French Arabs playing "de souche" characters. Why?

Have we run out of European actors? Has to be Wokism has it not? It looks stupid. What next? Depardieu as Idi Amin in a biopic?

Surely there must be some mixed race actresses looking for a gig? Anyway no bother. A hugely brilliant kitchen-sink piece as good as any Ken Loach would come up with for you trans-Channel viewers if you want a ballpark comparison.

Go and see it.

PS now read reviews by critics in The Guardian in Italian Spanish German and many of them find fault with the "unresolved" elements at the end they find more could have been said. How many dots do they need on the i's how many crosses on the T's. It is all there .... Jeez seriously fill in the gaps make an effort .... reading maps sometimes you have to think ditto in a film or novel .... increíble; unglaublich; incredibile as they say in ....
