OMG! I was loving this UNTIL it ended. I'm not going to spoil this because it is full of suspense. This is well written, acted and filmed. I can not complain about anything other than the ending. You'll have to watch it to understand why. It is worth the watch.

Death of the maiden
jotix10022 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Roberto Bermudez, a university law professor, respected author, and penal code expert, is conducting a special class for advanced students. It will only be an eight weeks course. Bermudez is surprised to find among his students is Gonzalo, an enigmatic young man, the son of friends, now living in Europe. From the start, Gonzalo appears to be a defiant pupil, whose concern appears to be proving to Bermudez his own theory about the subject at the heart of this seminar.

When a young woman is discovered in the university parking area, the whole class is instantly interested in the homicide. Bermudez, with his vast experience, believes the murder of the woman, who happens to be a waitress from a hang-out where most students spend time, realizes this homicide is the work of a psychopath. He begins his own investigation, trying to satisfy his own curiosity in discovering the assassin. His friendship with the police, helps him tie loose ends about the crime. It becomes obvious Gonzalo, a mysterious past, as well as his own interest in the case will bring the two men into a dangerous course of action.

Directed with sure hand by Hernan Golfrid, whose "Musica en espera" this viewer admired, we looked forward for the new film with interest. The work is based on a novel by Diego Paszkowski, which, unfortunately we did not read, gets a great production under Mr. Golfrid's direction. The adaptation of the novel by Patricio Vega is the weakest element in the film, which gets an impeccable treatment by Mr. Goldfrid. Technically, this Argentine- Spanish co-production has nothing to envy from films of the genre.

There are many unresolved issues in the story which lets the audience want for more. In reality, nothing is ever proved about who the real killer is, thus, the picture asks the viewer to get his own conclusion. There are hints of a deeper connection between the professor and his brilliant student, which is not really explored in more detail. And yet, the film involves us from the start. The complex character of Roberto by Ricardo Darin, probably the best actor working in movies today, gets an excellent performance. Roberto is probably the best mind in criminal law in the country. In his mind, he figures out who the killer is. Unknown to him, he is going against another brilliant mind, that of Gonzalo, who has returned to the country out of nowhere to give Roberto a run for his money.

Basically, this is a showcase for actors. On the one hand, Ricardo Darin, and on the other, a less experienced, but equally sly, is the wonderful Alberto Ammann, a new face in the Argentine film scene. The two actors match each other in unexpected ways. Calu Rivero plays Laura, the sister of the slain victim of the crime, who gets thrown into the picture perhaps to help Roberto entrap the man he thinks is the one responsible for the crime. Rolo Pulpeiro, the cinematographer, captures the moody dark tones the director required to set the action. Sergio Moure contributed the incidental piano score that blends perfectly with the plot.

Ricardo Darin elevates this familiar thriller
estebangonzalez1019 May 2015
"Details. It's all in the details."

Fresh after the success of The Secret in Their Eyes, Ricardo Darin stars in another criminal suspense thriller that attempts to recreate that similar slow building atmosphere. Directed by Hernan Goldfrid, Thesis on a Homicide, begins with a lot of promise thanks in large part to Darin's charismatic performance as Roberto Bermudez, a criminal law specialist who is teaching a two month course to recent graduate lawyers. He has just published a well received book in the field as well and that is how we are introduced to his character. He is an intelligent and well respected man, but his work has affected his personal life as he lives on his own after a failed marriage. He takes a particular interest in one of his students who has come from Spain and whose parents he was a close friend of. His name is Gonzalo (Alberto Ammann) and he seems to fit a particular psychological profile that troubles Roberto. He feels like Gonzalo is one of those arrogant rich kids who wants to prove he can commit the perfect murder. When a murder takes place in the parking lot of the Faculty of Law, Roberto becomes obsessed to prove that Gonzalo is behind the crime. This obsession leads him to few hours of sleep and at the same time he ends up putting Laura's (Calu Rivero), the victim's sister, life at risk when he uses her as bait to reach Gonzalo. This obsession gradually makes Roberto lose his mind and it becomes an interesting psychological character study building on the suspense.

The film opens with a lot of promise and I was engaged with Darin's performance. He is one of those few actors who can turn a weak script into an interesting and compelling movie. This isn't an intelligent thriller, but it works thanks to his lead performance. Unfortunately the build-up doesn't fulfill its promise because the ending feels forced. The film tries to be an intelligent thriller focusing on the law system, but it never really delves deep into the subject matter and everything is slightly touched upon. The thriller never feels like it could stand out on its own because it seems to borrow heavily from other films in the genre and you can't help but feel like you've seen this same plot in numerous other movies. The film does a good job at establishing the atmosphere during the first half of the film, but once the behavior of Roberto becomes overly obsessive it is apparent that each decision he makes is forced to move the story along. I felt like some of the liberties the director took with the character were too manipulative and out of character. The final fifteen minutes of the film are very disappointing in that way and everything seems rushed, which doesn't work at all in a film that took so much time to build the atmosphere in the first place. Calu Rivero delivers an interesting performance although there isn't much for her to do here. This is Darin's film and he makes the screenplay work to the best of his ability, but the rest of the characters are all underdeveloped.

I couldn't help but feel that the cinematography was very pretentious at times. It looks good and has some interesting angles, but after a few minutes you realize there isn't much purpose to these shots other than to show off the director's talents. It becomes distracting at times and it really didn't add anything to the story. There are a couple of dream sequences that didn't work either, but I'm being a little to critical of this film because for the most part I was entertain and intrigued. The suspense works, but unfortunately the final payoff disappoints and you are left with that bittersweet taste in your mouth. When it comes to Argentinean cinema, Ricardo Darin is already involved in its most important films, but this isn't one I'd recommend. Skip this and watch The Secret in their Eyes or Nine Queens if you haven't had a chance to see Darin. He's a talented actor who has refused over the past decade to work in Hollywood, but if you've seen Argentinean films you probably have an idea of what a great actor he is.

Far from "The Secret In Their Eyes"
norbertosica20 January 2013
I read many reviews before seeing "Tesis...", some of which were talking about this film with Ricardo Darin was at the level of "The Secret in Their Eyes".

Far from being a bad movie, we can say that is far from "The Secret in Their Eyes", perhaps one of the best productions of the Argentina film history.

In "Tesis ...", the cinematography was maintained to the end. However, the Director forgot to give empathy and action to the story and he focused exclusively on achieving good levels to the camera, which in itself is very good for Argentine cinema, but does not help you achieve a good movie in the balance sheet.

The lack of pace of the scenes, added to the "slow motion" soundtrack, with excesses in the silence of the main characters, made a frame interesting in itself, become monotonous and boring.

I repeat: it is not a bad movie, but it is too far from a "The Secret in Their Eyes".

This is an interesting Argentina/Spain co-production being well paced , suspenseful and skillfully edited
ma-cortes12 February 2014
This is a highly thrilling and cerebral mystery about a battle of wits filled with twists and turns . Mystery , intrigue about bizarre facts happen in a University when appears a killing corpse . The same team , actor (Ricardo Darin) and producers (Gerardo Herrero , Axel Kuschevatzky) , who made ¨The secret in your eyes¨ bring us another suspenseful film , "Thesis on a Homicide" or ¨Tesis Sobre Un Homicidio¨ . The picture is exciting and some moment brilliant , and the actors are quite reliable such as Ricardo Darin and Albert Hammann . It deals with Roberto Bermudez (Ricardo Darin) , a specialist in criminal law, is convinced that one of his students secretly dreams of executing the perfect crime . He is named Gonzalo Ruiz Cordera (Alberto Ammann) and Roberto thinks he committed a brutal murder . It leads him to start an investigation that becomes his obsession .

The film contains tension , thriller , drama , mystery , plot twists and including decent scares with tense sequences especially in its final part , in a unexpected denouement , near of the end . Hitchcock-style psychological thriller , being surprisingly good and compellingly realized . The original as well as entertaining idea is overspread throughout the movie , but not totally satisfactory , including conventional pitfalls . The main cast is frankly fine , such as Ricardo Darin as a retired lawyer working as a criminology professor obsessed with chasing a supposed killer and Alberto Ammann as a young lawyer who bears a dark past ; besides , a gorgeous Calu Rivero as victim's sister . Darin is an excellent leading figure of the most important Argentinian movies such as : "El Faro" (1998), "El Mismo Amor La Misma Lluvia" (1999), "Nueve Reinas" (2000), "La Fuga" (2001) and especially known for ¨The secret in your eyes¨ and ¨El Hijo De La Novia¨ . Albert Ammann also starred several hits as Spanish cinema as Argentinian one , such as : ¨Eva¨, ¨Lope¨ , ¨Invasor¨ , ¨Combustion¨, among others , being especially known for ¨Cell 211¨ or ¨Celda 211¨ . The motion picture is pretty well , although sometimes stagy , overlong and slow moving ; however is entertaining for continuous suspense . Sinister and mysterious atmosphere plenty of lights and shades , it is finely photographed by cameraman Rolo Pulpeiro . Suspenseful and stirring musical score by Sergio Moure who previously composed successful films as ¨Unconscious¨ and being expert on frightening atmosphere such as ¨El Cuerpo" and ¨Kidnapped¨ .

The film was well produced by various producers as Gerardo Herrero , Axel Kuschevatzky , Alfredo Odorisio , Vanessa Ragone ; all of them have produced a lot of successes in the new Argentinian and Spanish cinema . Being professionally written Patricio Vega and well directed by Hernán Golfrid who formerly realized only one movie titled "Music on Hold" or ¨Musica en espera¨. The flick will appeal to suspense enthusiasts and Ricardo Darin fans . Rating : 6.5/10 Good , better than average . It's well worth watching and contains some really thrilling scenes and intriguing images .

Preponderance of evidence
hof-411 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
As in many Hitchcock films, we know who committed the homicide in the title in the first few minutes. The rest of the movie is about the obsession of Roberto, the law professor, to trap and expose the criminal; through him and other characters the viewer obtains clues and hints about the purpose and the motivation of the killer. None of these clues is definitive, and most can be interpreted in more than one way.

I must I say I was a little bit put off on first viewing; in films of this type we expect a solution, but here we just get an additional clue and then the movie ends. On second thought (and second viewing) I think this is what makes the movie so good. Solutions are almost always disappointing. In contrast, this ending delivers preponderance of evidence from incomplete information but leaves many points unresolved, as in real life and real legal proceedings.

Ricardo Darín's performance is flawless; he has developed into one of the finest actors of his generation. Alberto Amman is equally excellent; he alternates subtly and almost imperceptibly between boyish charm and creepiness. Director Hernán Goldfrid hits all the right notes all the time; his pacing is perfect. Production values are excellent.

This movie is a must see. As a bonus, you'll get to know the magnificent building housing the School of Law of the University of Buenos Aires.

Argentina trying to get the American essence
cali_delatorre24 May 2014
I can say, as an Argentinian, that this movie shows the great influence American cinema has all over the world. In this case it shows, together with "The Secret of his Eyes", the improvement in terms of camera uses and photography, always following the American prototype. Particularly I don't think this is a movie to be proud of, but it's not bad neither. It has a lack of emphasis in the plot and maybe needs to be more dynamic. I wouldn't take a side the fact that Argentinian movies are getting better and better leaving behind that decay they used to have. This movie, "9 Queens" and "The Secret of his Eyes" can prove my theory.

Unfulfilled promise of a good thriller
MacacoBanditi17 January 2013
Following up on the success of "The secret in their eyes" comes another Argentine psychological thriller starring Ricardo Darín, a professor of law who suspects one of his students of committing a heinous crime in the university where he teaches a postgraduate course on law. Strong performances all around, especially Calu Rivero as the victim's sister. Unfortunately there are some very serious flaws in the pace and cinematography, which at times gets so pretentious it comes across as amateurish. The first 60 minutes of this movie are excruciatingly slow and filled with close-up shots. Close-ups of hands, eyes, fingers, cigarettes, coffee mugs. The very few wide shots are from a very low angle. Whether the idea was to make it experimental or artsy, it failed, and it becomes annoying when you get to see the dirt in the skin pores of the protagonist.

The topics of justice, fairness, ethics and the law are brought up repeatedly but regrettably never get discussed deeper than coffee-table level. The plot is set up in a promising and original way, but it quickly gets bogged down in a succession of long, meaningless shots and the story loses grip. After a while the suspense atmosphere appears contrived and more or less imposed by the music and the cinematography rather than the story unfolding. This movie could have been great, but some of the key elements that make a good crime/psychological thriller are absent.

A great movie, not a masterpiece
pinkpab7 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Reading some reviews, apparently some people expected a movie as great as "El secreto de sus ojos", which is one of the best Latin American movies ever, just because they are from the same country and the main actor is also Ricardo Darin. If you expect another masterpiece, this is not where to look. Anyway, Ricardo Darin is a great actor and he shows it again here, playing a retired lawyer who now is a teacher and is convinced one of his students not only murdered a girl, but also wants Darin to discover him I liked the movie very much, but let me warn you: if you think that a movie must, in order to be good, have a happy ending (or a "Hollywood ending" to quote Woody Allen), then don't see it. I'm hoping there are plans for a sequel!

The end makes no sense
monicaspucci18 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This could have been a great movie, but the stereotype of the "smart guy who knows it all but no one believes" is tiring. Maybe some other facets of the characters could have been explored, as well as the reasons of the murder.

Personally, I was not expecting a happy ending, but the movie ends leaving is with a feeling that something os missing, as the last scene is disappointing. So the assassin decided not to kill her (why?), left the show and threw the to knife in the fire? And the smart guy figured that all in the end? And the boy wanted revenge because he thinks the teacher is his father?

Disappointing. Very disappointing.

Solid thriller that tapers off at the end
blott2319-123 February 2022
Thesis on a Homicide is a taut thriller about a cat-and-mouse game between a former lawyer and a young man he believes is a murderer. The question throughout the film remains whether he is right in his assumptions or if he's jumping to conclusions. I love that element of mystery that is woven throughout the film. It moved in ways that I kind of expected, but it still felt exciting. For instance, you could see certain moments where it appeared the blame would shift from one character to another, but I was looking at it with a bit of dread anticipating that horrible possibility. It's easy to love a protagonist played by Ricardo Darin, even when he's a bit stoic and quiet like we see in this film. You want to see him come out on top even when he makes some ill-advised decisions. But he's just a little abnormal, so you still question whether you should be trusting him.

The most frustrating and disheartening part of Thesis on a Homicide is the lack of a proper conclusion. You can see the kind of dramatic cliffhanger they want to leave you on, so there's this level of suspense even in the final moments. However, it didn't work well for me. There's something about the way they deliver the last scenes that made me annoyed rather than satisfied. It's like the movie just stops rather than ends. Otherwise, I was fully on board for the entire mystery. It was a great thriller that has a nice slow burn that keeps the tension ratcheting up throughout. You keep waiting for the big shocker or surprise reveal, but they maintained a level of suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. Perhaps on rewatch the end will sit better with me, but for now I find Thesis on a Homicide to be good but not one of Darin's greatest films.

Game of cat and mouse
anemoss-6452617 May 2023
Excellent film with a unique atmosphere of mystery and suspense centered on a murder that challenges a law professor to prove the guilt of what he considers a suspect. The acting of Ricardo Darin is awesome. Interesting, intelligent, focused on the role of justice and the ethics of laws, made by power for power (reminds me of something from Marx) but questions whether the truth is also the truth. A game of cat and mouse between a smart law professor with instincts and a law student with intelligence and challenge, on the subject of "crime". The showdown and the embroidery dialogues. The end !!.... and the journey are worth it.
