Fortunate children?
This is a pure documentary ; the actors are just extras, with no line to say ;although it features scenes from the Ernst Marischka's trilogy of the fifties, starring the unforgettable Romy Schneider, one is told , a thing everyone who has read one of the empress' biographies already knows, that those films are historically erroneous ;the late Schneider ,who hated these films ,would agree.
The doc focuses on Sissi's children ,a side which has seldom been broached; her rivalry with her mother-in-law does not explain everything ;a psychiatrist ,who intervenes in the doc, says that the empress was in love with herself ; she was often away from Vienna , and her children did not see her for two years :"she became a stranger to them" ; she chose a husband for Gisele without asking her opinion when the daughter was 15 ;her positive intervention in favor of Kronprinz Rudolph -who was brought up in an inhuman way by a military brute - would not prevent him from committing suicide when he grew up ; her younger daughter ,Marie-Valérie , was almost her possession ,a piece of luggage she carried through Europa (there was nothing maternal , the psychiatrist asserts ).
Rudolph's daughter ,Erzsi, nicknamed "the red archduchess" had an unusual fate: she was the heir to a large fortune but also to her father's liberal ideas ; unlike Gisele and Marie Valérie ,she would deserve a whole film ;the same goes for Rodolphe, whose life is always boiled down to the Mayerling tragedy.
An absorbing doc ...
