The mind-bending substance takes Richard on a psychedelic trip which presents the possibility of spiritual enlightenment.—Anonymous
- After realizing that all his material and academic success seems hypocritical and leave nothing but emptiness, Dr. Richard Alpert decides to take a leap of faith. He partners up with fellow colleague, Dr. Timothy Leary, a free spirited and rebellious visionary, to experiment with a mind-expanding substance (LSD) in search of finding greater truth in the field of human psychology. The psychedelic substance sends Richard on a divine journey through a series of flashbacks and hallucinations significant to his past. In these visions, he goes back to his therapy sessions, moments of great scholarly achievements, romantic affairs and sad memories. At one point, Richard panics and feels as though he has left his body. He is then transported to a place where time, space, and other human concepts have no relevance. The purity of this dream world leads him to an intense and profound spiritual experience. However, it isnt until the end of his psychedelic trip that he learns this external chemical reaction is not enough for real enlightenment.
