Six Feet Under and Brothers & Sisters alumna Rachel Griffiths, David Sullivan, Troy Winbush (The Goldbergs), Sophia Ali, Sarah Pidgeon (Gotham), Jenna Clause and Erana James (Golden Boy) are set as series regulars in Amazon’s young adult drama series The Wilds from writer-executive producer Sarah Streicher (Daredevil) and ABC Signature Studios, part of Disney Television Studios. They join previously announced cast Mia Healey, Helena Howard, Reign Edwards and Shannon Berry. Production began last month in New Zealand.
Part survival drama, part dystopic slumber party, The Wilds follows a group of teenage girls from radically different backgrounds after an airplane crash strands them on a deserted island.
Griffiths will play Gretchen Klein, an ambitious intellectual who runs an all-girls empowerment retreat.
Sullivan will portray Dr. Daniel Faber, an FBI trauma specialist. He’s a pro at putting his interviewees at ease and extracting valuable information from them.

Nightmare Alley is a developing thriller from Guillermo del Toro that will serve as a film follow-up from the auteur of abstract after his monumental achievement, the 2018 Best Director Oscar win for The Shape of Water. Shane Mosley has some friendly advice for Dana White -- Don't Accept Oscar De La Hoya's Boxing Challenge ... fight him in the Octagon instead! Remember, Oscar and Dana have been beefing hard lately -- with Dana calling Oscar all sorts of nasty names on ESPN. Dana White made the rounds on various ESPN shows this morning to fact-check rival mixed-martial arts promoter Oscar De La Hoya. It quickly devolved into name-calling.
While White definitely offered a different perspective and an alternative set of financial statistics meant to debunk De La Hoya’s recent claims that Mma’s major-league promotion doesn’t pay its fighters enough, the Ufc president mostly just ended up calling the retired boxer an “idiot” and a “liar” a bunch of times.
Oh, and White really, really wants to be drug-tested alongside De La Hoya. White had called De La Hoya “a cokehead” a few weeks ago, so that’s what that’s all about.

When Broadway’s King Kong opened earlier this month, critics did their best to one-up Beauty on how to kill a Beast. Big, hairy gloom might have settled over the cast following the show’s Nov. 8 opening, particularly after the publication of a New York Times pan that was unorthodox, if not downright bizarre. In place of a traditional review, Times critics Ben Brantley and Jesse Green published their back and forth conversation, taking turns lobbing brickbats. (“Ugh,” said Green; “aaaaaaaaargh,” responded Brantley)
Escaping the crossfire was Eric William Morris, the talented and appealing actor who plays Carl Denham, the 1930s-era New York movie director who heads off to Skull Island, along with unknown actress Ann Darrow (Christiani Pitts) in search of the legendary gorilla. Morris turns in a fine performance as Denham, playfully manipulating audience perceptions. Is he a hero? A scoundrel? Or worse?

“To ask ‘Whatever happened to Tab Hunter?'” a reporter for The New York Times once wrote, “is to ask ‘Whatever happened to America?'”
As we remember Hunter — the Hollywood heartthrob who died this week a few days shy of his 87th birthday — it’s clear that his own career and personal path follows America’s (and Hollywood’s) arc of understanding homosexuality in the post-wwii era. A performer who was once deeply closeted in the industry could, in his later years, make two outrageous comedies in which his romantic co-lead was played by legendary drag queen Divine.
Born Arthur Gelien, Tab Hunter was one of a stable of performers groomed for stardom by agent Henry Willson, who gave the neophyte performer his name and his first forays onto the big screen.

Just as sex scandals are pretty much as old as politics themselves, as long as we've had films, we've had cinematic depictions of sex scandals, usually serious and sometimes comedic. Whether filmmakers have had to be coy about the nature of the scandals -- see "The Best Man" or "Advise and Consent" -- or whether filmmakers have been able to directly tear sex scandals from the headlines -- see "Primary Colors" -- the ground has been fertile. Fortunately -- Unfortunately? -- sex scandals just keep coming along and we keep lapping them up, from Eliot Spitzer to John Edwards to Anthony Weiner. Bringing the genre to Sundance this year was "Zipper," a largely straight-faced approach to a plausibly finger-on-the-pulse topic, which falls flat because of a middle act in which the drama spirals into dated addiction craziness. When it's a political thriller, "Zipper" is respectably acted and presented and has some merit.

The Returned, from A+E Studios and FremantleMedia, focuses on a small town that is turned upside down when several local people who have been long presumed dead suddenly reappear, bringing with them both positive and detrimental consequences. Alejandro will play the town’s authoritative but accessible Sheriff Tommy Moran. Lowe plays Lena, one of Jack’s (Pellegrino) two daughters. Vairo plays one of the returned, Simon, a musician who comes back 10 years after his death. Alejandro, repped by Gersh and Main Title, was a regular on True Blood, Southland and Golden Boy.

The CW’s new fall schedule is here. You’ll notice it looks a lot like the current one. Most shows are staying where they are, with some exceptions to accommodate new titles and a couple returning favorites getting pushed to midseason.
The first big addition is The Flash, starring Grant Gustin as the fastest man alive, which will air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. The Arrow spin-off will lead into the 10th season of Supernatural. The Flash is taking the spot of The Originals, which is shifting to Monday nights (an evening where its repeats have already gotten some exposure). On Mondays,...

A quarter-century ago, Kevin Costner hit a double-play, following up "Bull Durham" with "Field of Dreams" and becoming king of the sports movie. Twenty-five years later, as "Field of Dreams" marks its 25th anniversary (it was released on April 21, 1989), Costner is back with "Draft Day." The movie's about football, not baseball, and Costner's character plays in the executive suite, not on the field, but his mere presence still offers a reminder of great sports movies past.
And after all, isn't nostalgia a key element of sports movies? "Field of Dreams" makes this explicit -- we long for the sports heroes of our childhood, for a supposed long-gone golden age of our preferred sport, as a way of connecting with our past and bridging the generational divide that separates us as adults from our parents. Sports movies offer more than just the drama of winners and losers, or the journey from dream to achievement,...

Producing the movie adaptation of Veronica Roth's Ya novel "Divergent" was something different for husband-and-wife producers Lucy Fisher and Doug Wick. One of many young adult would-be franchises these days, $85-million "Divergent," which opened to $56-million last weekend, started out its life in development with Wick and Fisher's Red Wagon shingle. They brought it to Summit Entertainment, which was later bought by Lionsgate. With that merger Summit brought the last "Twilight" installments to Lionsgate, which was already producing and releasing the blockbuster "Hunger Games" franchise. But unlike most franchises, in this case the studio decided that the dystopian romance starring Shailene Woodley ("The Spectacular Now") and hunk-on-the-rise Theo James ("Golden Boy") was such a strong bet that they greenlit the sequel before the first film came out. So Wick and Fisher, producers responsible for such high-end fare as "Lawless," "The Great Gatsby," "Memoirs of a Geisha,"...

The Hollywood machine isn't the studio-based system that it was in the mid-20th Century. An almost conspiratorial corporate entity that would spend years cultivating and curating movie stars. But, to some extent, it still exists in 2014. Through publicists, agents and even studios, the industry still tries to "create" new stars. And, for better or worse (depending how you see it), it's mostly male actors that get this treatment today (although any leading lady in a Michael Bay film may qualify outside of Scarlett Johansson). Some happen almost by accident (Robert Pattinson), some have delayed debuts (Chris Hemsworth), many aren't worthy of the hype (Alex Pettyfer) and a few may take decades before they are deliver on their potential (Matthew McConaughey). Next weekend the big screen adaptation of "Divergent" is hitting theaters and, all of a sudden, people are going to start talking about Theo James. Granted, James isn't new to Hollywood and,...

Theo James' preppy look is a far cry from his trademark Dauntless black attire. The Divergent star appears in the latest issue of GQ, modeling several ensembles in picturesque Nantucket. No surprise here, he is predictably perfect in the colorful and chic ensembles. The 29-year-old reveals to the magazine that at first he was hesitant to sign on to appear in movie franchise, even though he enjoyed reading fantasy series as a child. "I probably pretended I was reading, like, Sartre or something, but it was all Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings," James says. Besides starring on the short-lived CBS series Golden Boy and an unforgettable cameo in Downton Abbey—in case you forgot, he...

Advance tickets for Divergent are now on sale, and to mark the occasion, Summit has released a new featurette, which focuses on Theo James' character Four. Known to some for TV series Bedlam and Golden Boy, or for his brief but memorable role in an episode of Downton Abbey, James appears to be up for some stunts, particularly as it relates to fight scenes. Divergent star Shailene Woodley speaks highly of James' listening capability and reactions as an actor, adding that he's "also really tough on screen and a really strong person." Meanwhile, author Veronica Roth said Theo James' screen test is the only one she saw, and she sounds thrilled with the casting choice. Roth recently shared her thoughts on the film after screening it, and it sounds like she's happy with how Neil Burger has adapted her story. Hopefully fans feel the same way when the...

The cast of "Hawaii Five-0" is getting a little bigger. Chi McBride, who joined the show in a recurring part earlier this season, is now a series regular.
McBride plays Capt. Lou Grover, the recently appointed head of the Honolulu Pd Swat team. He and McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) have frequently butted heads -- even while working together -- in his previous appearances.
"After his first guest spot, we knew we had something special here with Chi playing Captain Lou Grover," executive producer Peter Lenkov says. "He just fit seamlessly into the fabric of 'Hawaii Five-0,' and viewers are enjoying the spirited, if sometimes antagonistic, interaction between him and McGarrett. We are so thrilled to welcome Chi into our Ohana."
McBride, for his part, says his "corny" ambition as a young actor was to appear on CBS, since Jackie Gleason was his boyhood idol.

Chi McBride has been upped to series regular on CBS‘ Hawaii Five-o. CBS announced last summer McBride, who starred in the network’s short-lived Golden Boy, would guest star on the fourth season debut of Five-0, playing Swat Captain Lou Grover – a character from the original series. At the time, it was suggested more episodes with McBride were likely. With its switch from Monday at 10 Pm to Fridays at 9 this season, and without those younger-skewing Monday comedies as its leadin, Five-0 is up 17% in overall audience — from 10.2 million to nearly 12 million viewers — but is down 19% in the demo; its median age has increased from last season’s 55.8 years at this point last season, to 59.5 this season to date. “Well, I know this sounds corny, but the only thing I ever wanted in my career was to be on CBS, the home of my idol Jackie Gleason,” McBride enthused in today’s announcement.
