Missing A Major Critical Point
JerseyGirl502 November 2022
There was a lot of fear-mongering in this episode. I greatly appreciated that they tried to present both sides of the issue by having a patient who didn't believe in abortion make a decision that would affect the rest of her life because she wouldn't have one (many shows wouldn't bother). But this story is based in NY - a state where abortion is legal up to 24 weeks (!) and later if the health or life of the mother is at risk or the fetus isn't viable. That was never mentioned.

Roe v Wade being overturned put the decision back in the hands of the states - it did not carte blanche take away the right to an abortion everywhere in the country. There are clearly some states where that right will be taken away, but there are others (NY, NJ, etc.) where the right to an abortion has been codified into law.

I realize that the show is seen across the country, but it takes place in a state that has protected that right and that was never mentioned. There is so much misinformation surrounding this issue - adding to it by omitting an important fact doesn't help. This country has so many divisive issues right now it's discouraging. And for the record, my opinion is that this should be a decision between a woman and her doctor. Period. My religious beliefs should not infringe on yours and vice versa.

Very powerful and spot on

Warning: Spoilers
The opening scene was strong enough. Watching each character think about what just happened and what it meant at that moment and what it could mean in the future (which, by the time this episode aired we've seen a lot of what it has meant ). The looks on their faces showed how deep it was. That was impactful enough, but as soon as Karen stopped Max, and seemed to catch herself and then said "Do something"... that was so emotional. I felt that in my heart. So many felt like that on June 24.

Lauren's heartfelt talk with the students.

Karen's story about her friend when she was in college.

Iggy having to apologize to the jerk.

Samira boycotting camp.

I loved this episode, the writers took real life and attacked it.

Emmy worthy!
donna-118252 November 2022
This episode deals with reaction to the recent ruling by SCOTUS that overturned Roe v. Wade. The writing and acting approached the question with insight, passion, and compassion in a way not seen often enough, either onscreen or in real life.

Various characters, major and minor, confront the reality of how their lives and the lives of others are impacted by the landmark court decision that has profoundly changed the legalities surrounding a topic of great import in American society.

The ending may not be what many might wish for, but it does successfully allow the viewer to make their own decision on an extremely sensitive topic.

Talking real situations in a fantasy world?
Sunfox-224 November 2022
I find it hard to enjoy a show that attempts to be dramatic and poignant with a real situation, but then sets it up with completely false facts. Roe vs Wade did not change the abortion laws in NY, which allowed it before RvW. So the SCOTUS decision had absolutely no effect for medical practices or abortion rights within NY, making the whole episode farcical.

Second, the idea that this is completely ignored for a show that is purposefully trying to be "real", destroys all credibility for any message they're trying to say. If they can't get a major fact correct, then why should anything else they say be given credibility? It's just crappy writing.

And then the nurses refusing to hand a surgeon a scalpel and complaining that it was a "waste of hospital resources"? In what world would that occur or be allowed, or has ever happened on this show for far more outlandish and risky procedures?

New Amsterdam has always played fast and loose with creating even vaguely realistic situations, but having a gigantic leaky vat of toxic substances on the top floor of a hospital is one thing... and screwing up major legal details on an episode purporting to deal dramatically with real-world legal things, is another.

Powerful episode. Leave politics out of reviews.
lizarmstrong-602933 November 2022
To all the people who are trashing the show because of its political leanings -- change the channel if you don't like what you see. Simple. No one is forcing you to watch anything.

Definitely a difficult, and often frustrating, episode to watch. Yes, the show is largely targeted to a left-leaning audience - but aren't most TV dramas these days?

In my opinion, "New Amsterdam" is one of the only shows worth watching on TV right now. Its characters are complex and diverse, plots are well-developed, and the acting is outstanding all round.

Bravo to all involved on this incredible show and keep it up!

Too many falsehoods
gimesomm6 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is in New York where abortion has been codified and is available up to 24 weeks. Max runs around acting like it's now going to be illegal lock stock and barrel. Then he tells Todd, the conservative ex-military guy, that there is no "right to vote" in the constitution.... It's the 15 amendment... shame on you writers for lying and fear mongering. Also, the surgery room scene with the woman who has cancer and that wants to keep her baby... Do you writers seriously think a highly trained surgical nurse is going to stop the Doctor mid surgery to argue with her about what she should do for her patient (open on the table) because of THIER OWN political beliefs? Ridiculous scene.

Try writing these shows for real people based on real demographics NOT just one sided leftist media hype.

One of the most moving episodes I've watched
jayjays3 November 2022
If you're anti-abortion then you're gonna hate it. What surprises me is reviewers hating this episode getting to episode 7 of season 5 before understanding (realising?) the show's left leaning politics (?!) wow this long?

Loved the episode - thought it dealt with the issue from multiple angles in a considered manner. One of the best.

I'm feel fortunate to live outside the US and not have to be impacted by the decision- but I feel deeply for my American sisters who have been. I was soo upset by the BS 1 star reviews - this is the first IMDB review I've written in 25 years of hazing an account.

Typical liberal BS
skilletpanhead123416 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
No TV show nowadays can make an episode without talking about something political. Too bad so sad about the supreme court decision. Oh? Women now have to take responsibility? They have to think twice before having sex? How dare we expect the least. This is beyond laughable. So predictable the whole episode. A predictable script. Absolute garbage. So silly. Oh wow. A march at the end for "womens rights"? What about the future women in the womb? Oh yeah. One of the doctors having an abortion, killing her baby, that the other doctor conceived with her. Disgusting. But, it does show just how terrible and how far this world has fallen. It depicts the world perfectly when it comes to selfishness.

Bravo New Amsterdam Team
natashadiedricks2 November 2022
I can't believe the ratings for this episode is so low. Bravo to the writers and the whole New Amsterdam team involved in having the courage to highlight this important issue and for dealing with it in such a delicate and intelligent way - showing different perspectives and the wide ranging impact of a decision made by a handful of people that affects millions. It was a hard but beautiful and necessary episode. I'm glad to support a show that stays current and is not afraid to handle the difficult topics. It is what true art should be and it saddens me that those who rated so low don't see that - and how we need bravery like that in this world.

Ignore the negative reviews!
bigpoppa20620 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the more powerful episodes in the history of the franchise and everyone stepped up.

Weaving the personal stories into the narrative made it feel honest and real. Having a tour of students learn about how the medical staff's decisions affect their patients was a nice addition. And even Iggy stepped up that day.

Many of the other reviews for this episode are just from the reviewer's political viewpoint. Judge the episode on its own merit. The glaring issue from the writers though was that New Amsterdam is supposed to be set on New York City. That state still would approve abortions.

Ignore the negatives reviews obviously left by the right wing and appreciate what it must have felt like on that day in a hospital. 10/10!

Leftist propaganda
DeauMinic30 May 2023
New Amsterdam is definitely my favourite show. The stories used to be good. The actors and actresses are mostly brilliant. But then they drop this bucket full of dirt on our heads. They preached the liberal sermon and shoved this down our throats. As if we are not being brainwashed already by other shows..

I never expected them to make an episode about abortion. The opening was disgusting, and the whole story line was fake as ever. After this episode, I basically stopped watching New Amsterdam because it will never be good again. I guess there is a reason why this show will stop, never to come back again. This actually might be a good thing.

Review to explain
dinokiller-7095020 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Some of the reviews are blatantly lying. This is not leftist propaganda nor is the show saying that the rights of women in New York have been stripped away. Max is trying to help a friend in Texas, last I looked Texas wasn't new York.

The best part of this entire episode was Iggys day dream. His words and those of Martin, hit home the absolute truth about the revoking of a woman's right. It is not just a woman's rights. The overturning of Roe v Wade is a threat to gay rights, to the right to vote and even to the rights guaranteed by the constitution and it's amendments. Justice Thomas said as much in his ruling.

The second best sequence was when Dr. Bloom explained to the kids about her abortions. The right to choose is dying. This show gave us a glimpse into that death.
