This Lucifer feature contains spoilers.
It takes only mere minutes in the Lucifer pilot episode to recognize that things have changed in Heaven, in Hell, and most certainly on Earth. “Remind Dad that I quit Hell because I was sick and tired of playing a part in his play,” Lucifer instructs his sibling Amenadiel, and the Devil’s crime fighting journey with Detective Chloe Decker and the LAPD begins.
Viewers are quickly introduced to Lucifer’s angelic brother (Db Woodside) and the leather clad demon Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) providing insight into a family just as dysfunctional as any on Earth. And even though we’re frequently treated to less than reverential references to the family patriarch, God remains unseen, safely ensconced in Heaven – that is until his sons’ bickering in season five becomes so intense that He’s compelled to finally leave the Pearly Gates and find out what the...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Oscar Micheaux's Within Our Gates is showing June 17 - July 17, 2020.Oscar Micheaux has been hailed as many things: The first Black auteur, a modernist “Czar of Black Hollywood,” and a pioneering independent director whose distinctive style forged new ways of telling stories about the complexities of the Black experience. He was also—quite literally—a pioneer. Born in 1884 as the fifth child of former slaves, Micheaux moved to Chicago as a teenager, where he worked in stockyards and steel mills before setting up a series of small businesses. He lived an itinerant life as a Pullman porter, saving enough money to buy a plot of land in South Dakota. There he set up a thriving homestead, where he lived off the prairie land and wrote novels. Droughts and the break-up of his marriage brought an end to this chapter,...

British actor Tom Ellis (Miranda, Gates) is set as the lead of USA Network’s drama pilot Rush. Rick Gonzalez (Coach Carter) also has been cast in the project, from Fox 21. Rush, written/directed by Jonathan Levine, is in the vein of USA’s Royal Pains as it too is about an on-call doctor. It centers on Dr. William Rush (Ellis) who is not your average on-call doctor — he’s not attached to any hospital, he’s highly discreet no matter what the ailment as long as the client can pay his cash-only premium and the doctor can party with the best of them. Gonzalez will play Manny Maquis, a well-connected dealer, who considers Rush a friend, as well as a client. Ellis, repped by Anonymous Content and UK’s Hamilton-Hodell, starred in the ABC pilot Gothica last season. Gonzalez is with Domain, Framework Entertainment and attorney Lev Ginsburg.

With Hannibal, The Munsters, Sleepy Hollow, Penny Dreadful, The Following, and another season of American Horror Story coming to TV, it’s a wonderful time to be a horror TV fan. Add ABC’s Gothica to the mix.
Not to be messed up with the crappy Halle Berry movie Gothika, Gothica features a stable of our favorite literary horror characters, from Dorian Gray to Victor Frankenstein, Dracula, and others. It’s moving faster than Penny Dreadful, a similar sounding project at Showtime, and has found its Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and “Grace” Van Helsing.
