A nice intimate performance from TV host/writer/comedian Jô Soares and his TV band O Sexteto performing jazz classics in one of their many shows in Brazil in the
early 2000's when Soares and the group where hired by Globo network to conduct their brand new talk show. It's a rare opportunity for viewers and fans of the program to see
the musical talents from the group since on the program the band never performs entire numbers, it was only small bits of music here and there usually stopped with Jô making a
cue sign to stop the music so he could start interviewing each night's guest. And it's also a great opportunity to see the musician Jô Soares singing, playing trumpet and playing
bongo drum and he's quite good in everything.
Soares and group made a comprehensible set list of standard jazz classics with some brief exposition about the songs, the history of jazz and its importance with their whole tour devoted to present the genre's evolution. Among the numbers we have Gershwin's "Summertime", "Let's Get Lost", "Caravan" (where Jô talks about a hilarious moment where he played the bongo and almost collapsed while playing the bongo because the band leader kept running the music for a longer time than expected and behind the bongo drumming there's a certain period of time one can keep playing it and after that it's a disaster because it wears out the player), among others, and to each number he talks about his musical experience, the story about the song and add some humor to it and as we know he was a master in funny storytelling. Didn't find much of a great singer, some singing numbers work (the final being the best but it's actually a Portuguese version of an American song) but when he's playing the trumpet or the bongo he was extraordinary.
For his and O Sexteto fans this is a must-see concert, there's plenty of delightful moments (one highpoint I must mention is when drummer Miltinho performs drumming on a window when the band is introduced, it was strangely random but fun to watch); for jazz fans it's a cool moment to see very interesting numbers performed with excellence. It really raised my mood on a sad rainy afternoon. 9/10.
