Flickering Images
"Sears Catalogue 1-3" is No. 26 in the experimental Flux Film series (although in the opening titles listed as being No. 29), a series of films from the 1960's created by a variety of filmmakers, running from ten seconds to ten minutes long each. Among other shorts from the same series, Paul Sharits's contribution of around five shorts was fairly significant to the near forty produced, and more interesting as exercises in filmmaking than others (George Landow's "The Evil Faerie" was more like a quick laugh). This one from 1966 is particularly interesting given the context of the title, and the manner in which in is made.
Like most others by Sharits, the main gimmick of the film is utilizing the effect of quickly-flickering imagery to make a simple action effective. In the case of "Sears Catalogue 1-3", the film consists entirely of a sequence of photographs consistently displayed for the duration of the film (about forty seconds). As a whole, the photos lack any common theme excerpt likely being pulled from (presumably) some Sears catalogues and flickered at a quick rate to create a film. More interesting than others, and nicely made by a skilled artist. Nothing exceptional, but good for what it is.
