A Quality second episode.
Sleepin_Dragon9 March 2023
Humphrey and Esther investigate the strange disappearance of a family, who left behind a partially eaten meal and other tell tail signs of an instant exit.

It's a very good second episode, first off I'd like to start by me mentioning the late Ruth Madoc, who sadly died a few months before this was transmitted, not a massive role, but nice to hear her using a different accent, much missed.

It's definitely an intriguing case, I enjoyed the air of mystery, lots of interesting points and a very dramatic ending.

Some gorgeous scenery once again, it looks terrific.

A great Humphrey episode of course, and I am really enjoying his relationship with Esther, I'm not totally sure about him and Martha yet, I think they need to develop that a little, although Jamie Bamber could cause a stir anyway.

8/10.

Martha Sub plot not working
balldave4 March 2023
Really like the program and most characters. But it's clear from episode one that the Martha storyline is forced and has little substance. The loss of the child might be the unfortunate break in their relationship. Can't see it evolving any other way.

There's enough in Humphrey's manner of investigation and the clever stories to carry this along. Sidekick Zahra Ahmadi is appealing and natural. A good fit. Not sure how they'll handle PC Kelby Hartford though there's potential there for off beat side stories. Episode one's car theft chain concluded cleverly! Kelby's foot chase was filmed well. Every detective tale needs a rough and tumble foot soldier.

The same, but different

Step one of a spin-off - set up the world and the characters who live in it.

Step two - try to do things that are similar and yet different to what would have happened in the original show you've been spun off from.

This episode of 'Beyond Paradise' starts to do the latter, and is already feeling like its own beast.

We certainly are taken to a darker place at the end of the episode than 'Death in Paradise' would have gone.

I'm not a massive fan of this/the parent shows need to have a 'comedy' sidekick, but on the whole this episode again shows that this spin-off does have a lot of promise about it.

Good acting, solid plot, lovely weather
frank-2705 March 2023
I'm sure it was never that sunny for that long on the coast of Devon, at least not when I've been there, but this is a nicely-directed slice of fun.

It's great not to have a murder every week (though episode 1 was an attempted murder) and opportunistic crimes are more refreshing than pre-planned convoluted "perfect" ones. That said, as with half the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, there isn't necessarily even a crime in this one (okay, hit-and-run maybe, but there are extenuating circumstances.)

The fellow playing Matt/Matty/Matthew did a good job in the final scenes and there was at least one genuine surprise for me, even as a grizzled old detective-show watcher/reader. I'm glad we got some relief from the "Will Humphrey and Martha split up" jeopardy, which could get quite old quite fast.

Love this series even more than Death In Paradise and Doc Martin put together!
SunnyDaise3 March 2023
Beyond Paradise is already my all time fave UK crime series. This second episode has more Death In Paradise parallels eg Humphrey's home purchase and new friend, but the spin-off also has it's own world and quirks too. With the Doc Martin feel, it's like three shows in one (or even four as the endings are quite Vera-esque) which slightly makes up for there only being 6 instalments in this first season. Indeed, the only way they could improve, is to have a full run! Even the background music was sorted ie less dominant that last week. Lovely to see the much missed late Ruth Madoc one final time.

Episode 2

Warning: Spoilers
A family had an evening meal and then vanished into thin air.

The latest puzzle to confront DI Humphrey Goodman as he also tries to settle in Shipton Abbott.

The Colbert looks like a normal happy family with two young children. Humphrey is concerned because their are children involved.

A hit and run accident that happened at the day they disappeared turns out to be the main lead.

Meanwhile Humphrey is also shocked that Martha has rekindled a relationship with her ex. Archie Hughes was once engaged with Martha and has now become a junior partner in her cafe business. It means the cafe is up and running in a few days!

It looked like a mystery tailor made for Professor T. Although the police seemed to have kept a radio blackout over the missing family. Maybe they could had been located earlier.

Obviously there were parallels between Humphrey and Matthew Colbert. The cliffhanger ending was odd, what were everyone else looking at as the car rolled down?

Jamie Bamber joins the cast as the rather smarmy Archie. Phil Daniels overdoes the Devon accent. He should stick to cockney.

It's the final Hi-de Hi from Ruth Madoc who passed away several months before this episode aired.

Mary Celeste
safenoe13 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the main plot in this second episode of Beyond Paradise, which had a Mary Celeste feel to it. What happened to the family that disappeared a la Mary Celeste, we gradually learn piece by piece. This episode was Ruth Madoc's final role, and at the end we see the dedication to her, such a legendary actress.

Jamie Bamber, is introduced as Martha's business partner and erstwhile fiance, which rachets up the tension with Humprey somewhat. Humphrey's impulse buy of a houseboat was quite hilarious and sets the scene on the domestic front.

The series also explore the relationship between Martha and her mom Anna, so that's an extra layer.

For such a Piece of Crap there's no POCs

Warning: Spoilers
My minor problem with this is the same as my problem with Midsomer Murders, which is once you watch it for awhile, you realise that there are no absolutely no people of colour than the murderee all the murderer roles. Other than that, it is just a piece of absolute dribble, so badly written, and the storyline is just dire. As a partner Humphrey is just horrible. If you think about how this episode runs, she has just come off a miscarriage and how many rounds of IVF that they are essentially broke and living with her mother, and then he goes and ignores the situation and buys a boat without considering or consulting her, that is clearly I wreck waiting to happen, but that's okay it's all just cutesy fun... not... If this was real life, Martha was up a creek on her own, without a partner.
