Freddy Macdonald’s Sew Torn is a high-stakes crime thriller for everyone that grew up obsessed with choose-your-own-adventure novels. Working through three wildly different timelines, the story follows a mobile seamstress presented with a (truly) life-changing opportunity. After stumbling across a drug deal gone wrong, Barbara (Eve Connolly) is faced with a choice: commit the perfect crime, call the police, or simply drive away. Which would you choose?
Luckily, you’re not left with any lingering questions about what would have happened in either of the three scenarios, because you’re gifted the chance to witness them all! Following the threads of each decision, Sew Torn is divided into nice clean chapters that make for a series of very unfortunate events. In fact, the film opens on the aftermath of each possible timeline, and none look especially promising. It seems each choice leads to ruin but it isn’t the destination that counts,...

Moera Ainai is overseeing the project and Ketai will also serve as executive producer.
“Undying” centers on a woman, suffocated by motherhood, who has an affair with a man she hasn’t seen since high school only to discover a terrifying secret.
Before the sale, Ketai had recently written and directed “River Wild,” a modern adaptation of Universal’s 1994 thriller of the same name. Featuring Leighton Meester, Taran Killam, and Adam Brody, the movie enjoyed several weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 after its release on the platform.

Every actor wants to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Joining the Marvel family opens up many new opportunities and introduces eager performers to a whole new fan base. However, while many actors audition for roles in MCU films, very few are chosen. Even fewer are chosen for those coveted leading roles.
Adam Brody is one actor who tried out to become part of the MCU, but unlike most, who opt to keep mum and keep it moving, Brody has openly discussed the role he wanted. In a recent podcast interview, Brody talked about when he auditioned for a prime role in Guardians of the Galaxy, revealing his feelings about the actor who did manage to score the role.

This week, the top title for at-home viewing is all a matter of perspective. New releases “Elemental” (Disney) and “No Hard Feelings” (Sony) took the top position at Vudu and iTunes, respectively, while last week’s unanimous #1 “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony) kept the lead spot at GooglePlay. With “The Pope’s Exorcist” now #1 at Netflix, Sony topped three out of four lists.
Expect more changes to come: “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Paramount) reportedly debuts August 29 and unconfirmed reports have the PVOD of “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) as soon as September 5.
It’s notable that “Elemental” doesn’t dominate. The Pixar film sustained a better-than-anticipated theatrical run of $151 million domestic — five times its opening weekend — and $458 million worldwide. But with a reported $200 million production cost before marketing, it needs a very strong post-theatrical response that starts with PVOD.
Both “Elemental” and “No Hard Feelings” debuted as $19.99 sale titles rather than 72-hour rentals.

One of the latest thrillers to hit the ever-changing digital carousel over on Netflix is a new take on an old classic called "River Wild." Currently one of the most viewed releases on the streamer, the adventure film sends viewers hurtling down treacherous whitewater rapids in a fairly straightforward story of survivalist horror. Inspired by director Curtis Hanson's "The River Wild" starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon, this most recent version mostly jettisons the character dynamics of the original 1994 film in favor of the slightly more campy teens-in-peril trope.
Unless you consider "Deliverance" to be horror adjacent (and there are plenty of reasons why that's justifiable), there is a serious drought in the number of genre films offering up high stake thrills taking place on a whitewater rafting trip gone horribly awry. "River Wild" may not necessarily live up to the original, but it does offer up another chance...

Netflix has long distinguished itself from the streaming competition through its extensive pipeline of original content, and there is perhaps no greater illustration of that strategy’s success than this week’s Wrap Report for the week of Aug. 7-13.
Netflix originals captured the top four spots on the week’s chart, and five of the top six. This squares with Samba TV data analyzing the first half of 2023 which found that 80% of the top 15 streaming series and 87% of the top 15 streaming movies were Netflix originals. With the bulk of original programming outlays going toward scripted titles for global streamers, these titles continue to reap a return with strong viewership.
Gal Gadot’s second major Netflix original, the action thriller “Heart of Stone,” led the way with 1.8 million U.S. households watching the “Wonder Woman” star play an agent in a global peace-keeping organization. The film was popular with Black,...

It’s not unusual for films to see a boost when they shift from PVOD rental to Est. But “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony), which had dropped off the top 10 charts after several weeks of rental success, came back as #1 on all three now that it’s available to buy at $19.99.
“Barbie” has surpassed the Marvel animated title as #1 for the summer, but the renewed interest in “Spider-Verse” is a good reminder of how strong the brand can be.
In another sign of how comic book movies elevate those associated with them, “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot’s Netflix action title “Heart of Stone” hit #1 right away at the streamer. It received a lot of review attention, mostly negative. Its value will be better determined depending on if it sustains a lengthy run high on their charts.

The second half of Season 2 of “The Lincoln Lawyer” put the popular crime drama back atop the Top 10 charts for the week of July 31, as far as the English TV list, but how did “Heartstopper” Season 2 fare after its August 3 debut? Read on for this week’s analysis.
It seems appropriate that we start with the TV chart this week, since two returning shows topped the English series list with the second half of the second season of “Lincoln Lawyer” receiving 6.7 million views, followed by “Heartstopper” in second place with 6.1 million views. “Lincoln Lawyer” was the #1 watched show in the United States, Canada, four European countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand, while “Hearstopper” was #1 in Mexico and a few other European countries, including the United Kingdom.
“The Witcher” Season 3 took third place on that chart with 5.4 million views, followed by Season 3 of “Sweet Magnolias” with 2.9 million views. The...

Be it the feeling of atmospheric isolation, reconnecting with primal instincts, or the pervasive insignificance of human existence, something about venturing into the wilderness clicks so very well with thriller narratives that survival suspense tales have become a genre in themselves. Away from urban security, the tales plunge viewers into a world of uncertainty where unbound human nature shows its true face, and before we know it, the setting becomes the intangible antagonist the leads need to conquer. The recently released survival thriller River Wild, which is a remake of the much superior original one, although not the best venture the subgenre has to offer, follows the basic tenets of it in showcasing the perilous misadventure of a group of campers.
We would like to recommend some other great survival thrillers that you can enjoy if River Wild has piqued your interest in the subgenre. A couple of these might...

There is no shortage of outdoor survival thrillers that use past tragedies or estranged family ties as the fulcrum of the narrative mechanism, and in the well-made ones, the atmospheric isolation works like a charm in intensifying the central mystery. Although River Wild, a remake of the 1994 hit starring Meryl Streep of the same name (minus the definitive prefix), does fall into a similar category of movies, its straightforward plotline, questionable characterization, and loopholes contribute to it being a pretty forgettable watch.
While Leighton Meester and Adam Brody as leads make the ordeal of finishing the movie in one go less of a bland affair than it could have been, the highly predictable plot turns out to be the major deal breaker. From a qualitative aspect, the only similarity the remake shares with the original is the way it displays the lush green mountainscape of British Columbia in all its glory,...

For Sony, a big win this week: The studio has announced that “Insidious: The Red Door” ($19.99) is now the biggest-grossing horror film worldwide for 2023. That’s a little surprising, but a $182 million take tops both “M3GAN” and “Scream 6” for the honors.
However, it’s faring a little differently on VOD. Released to PVOD after its fourth weekend, the latest entry in the horror franchise had an uneven debut over three different platforms. It is #1 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue) but is currently only #5 at iTunes and #7 at Googleplay (which calculate by transactions). It got as high as #3 at iTunes after its Tuesday release.
Two other films placed atop the others: “The Little Mermaid” (Disney), also $19.99, repeated at #1 on iTunes, while “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (Paramount), just reduced to $5.99, leads at GooglePlay.

Adam Brody has blasted method acting as “f****** boring”. The 43-year-old ‘O.C.’ actor’s latest project was starring in Netflix’s remake of 1994 thriller ‘River Wild’ – that saw Meryl Streep’s rafting holiday take a deadly turn – but he said he didn’t use so-called immersive acting techniques in the movie reboot, like Jeremy Strong in ‘Succession’. Adam – who plays a heavily-tattooed ex-convict who will stop at nothing to make sure he never returns to prison and who terrorises a character played by his real-life wife Leighton Meester, 37 – told the Variety podcast about the prospect of going method: “It sounds f****** boring more than anything to me It sounds ungodly boring, but hats off to them. “Hats off to people that don’t watch their stuff, are Method… I don’t know, is it lacking that I can turn it off so quickly? “I don’t know. The new “River Wild” is a reimagining of Curtis Hanson’s classic 1994 thriller starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Bacon and David Strathairn about a rafting trip that takes a deadly turn.
In the new version, Adam Brody plays a heavily-tattooed ex-convict who will stop at nothing to make sure he never returns to prison. The movie also stars Brody’s wife Leighton Meester and Taran Killam, and it was directed and co-written by the trio’s longtime friend Ben Ketai.
Brody’s violent scenes with Meester are so frightening that one wonders why the couple — who’ve been married for nine years and have two children together — signed on to the film. “I tried to kill her for a fair amount of the movie,” Brody says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “I wouldn’t have picked this for us. August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.
