If you saw Welcome to Shirley, you wouldn't think it was made by a student who hasn't even graduated yet. It's touching, mature, and the characters easy to empathize with. The fitting soundtrack gives it a certain whimsy. It reminded me of a cross between The Royal Tenenbaums and Death at a Funeral but a little bit fresher.
I really love the way bowling is portrayed in the movie, it's a unique idea and although the overall concept of the movie isn't completely original the bowling dynamic gives it an interesting twist. I've lived in a small midwestern town before, so I also really appreciated the characters as well. It's hard not to enjoy a movie like this.
