Fiona Apple loves the Watkins Family Hour, and she loves old-fashioned folk songs. For proof, see the latest NPR Tiny Desk Concert, in which Apple emerges from her autumnal home underneath a desk to join the band on "In the Pines" and "Hop High." Fiona Apple hasn't been this happy since she got to take that octopus off her head.

Joss Whedon has been sued for $10 million for alleged copyright infringement over his 2012 movie The Cabin in the Woods, just over two weeks before the May 1 release of his latest film, The Avengers: Age of Ultron. In a complaint filed on Monday at a California federal court, author Peter Gallagher claims that the film "borrows heavily" from his 2006 book The Little White Trip: A Night In the Pines. Whedon and the other defendants—The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard, who co-wrote the script with Whedon, and studio Lionsgate, have not commented. The movie stars The Avengers and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, who is not named in the lawsuit, and made more than $66...

The TV world is always wild, and some of the cable networks are still figuring out exactly what it is they’re trying to get out of shows, as they attempt to appeal to whatever demographic they have decided is “theirs,” but the cancellation of Longmire was a shock to a lot of people.
That’s especially true when you consider the ratings it was getting.
Of course, saner heads prevailed, and the show was picked up by Netflix. The last word I head on it was that production is meant to start in March.
At any rate, the show is a great one, and stood out during its three season run as one that was trying to set its own mark.
The third season release is headed your way, and you want to mark your calendar for this one. It isn’t exactly loaded with special features, but it hardly matters with this show.

"No matter what I do, I can't deny them... what happened." Thanks to tipster & reader Ronny, we've got another worth watching stellar short called In The Pines to feature. This originally premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this spring and earned some raves then, now it's online in full for public viewing (via Vimeo). Jessica Martin stars as a young woman who goes on a journey into the forest to make contact with beings she believes she encountered once before. It was described as a "teenage" Close Encounters of the Third Kind and it definitely has that feel, I just wish there was a bit more to this (you'll see what I mean). Enjoy! The plot description for In The Pines from Vimeo: A young woman, convinced she has experienced an encounter with the extraterrestrial, becomes fixated on re-establishing contact in this striking study of the paranormal and the human...

Here's the plot suammary...

Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell's short film In The Pines is a compelling, unusual piece of science fiction. So unusual, in fact, that there is significant room to debate whether it should even be considered science fiction at all, which is entirely the point. A huge favorite on the festival circuit In The Pines is now available in its entirety online, which means now is the time that I show it to you rather than talking about it. Check it out below....

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.
