A stuntwoman, stunt coordinator and actor, Zoë Bell (Kill Bill, Death Proof) is on board to direct the upcoming action-survival thriller Free Fall, Variety has reported this morning.
Zachary Levi (Shazam) will star in the upcoming film. From XYZ Films, Free Fall “tells the story of a father’s attempt to reconcile with his estranged daughter on a rock-climbing trip that turns deadly as an accident leaves them stranded hundreds of feet in the air.”
Sean Finegan and Gregg Maxwell Parker wrote the screenplay.
“This script is the perfect combo of heartfelt and heart-stopping,” Zoë Bell said in a statement shared by Variety. “Between the producing team, the cast and the New Zealand crews, words don’t do justice to how thrilled I am to be bringing this film home.”
Producers Tom Hern and Nua Finau said, “We are stoked to be teaming up with the guys at XYZ again...

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

With Sharknado 5 making a splash on TV screens across the globe these past few weeks, what better time to visit the world of The Asylum? Cbm recently had the pleasure of interviewing Amy Johnston, the voice of Maxima in Machinima and Hasbro's Transformers: Combiner Wars animated series which is currently streaming on go90. In our chat, we touched on her performance as Maxima, whether there's more seasons of Combiner Wars coming down the line and also discussed some of her current and past projects. While Johnston does a bang-up job providing voice acting for Maxima in Combiner Wars, her day-to-day occupation is kicking ass as a stunt actor and motion capture performer. She's a frequent collaborator with Bat in the Sun and played Harley Quinn in the Super Power Beat Down episode that featured Joker & Harley vs Deadpool & Domino. She also had a role in the underrated 2013 underground-fighting thriller, Raze which starred Zoë Bell and Rachel Nichols. She also has a presence in anime fandom, as Dragon Ball fans should recognize Amy as the face...

Zoe Bell has proven that she’s up to the challenge of getting her hands dirty in films like Raze, Bitch Slap, and her career igniting role in Death Proof. Her physicality is without question. She more than holds her own in Camino as she rumbles in the jungle with a bunch of Columbian thugs. There’s a stark realism to her maneuvers, punches, and kicks, but the stunt woman turned actress from New Zealand doesn’t quite have the strength to carry this 70’s and 80’s throwback action film. Camino suffers from a case of being both monotonous and feeling like a film you’ve seen done better before.
Avery Taggert (Zoe Bell) is an award-winning photojournalist. Her new assignment is to venture into the jungles of Colombia and document a group of religious freedom fighters led by Fantastic Fest mainstay and all-around wild man Nacho Vigalondo – an inspired bit of casting.

XLrator Media announced today that they will distribute Josh C. Waller's action-thriller Camino. The film stars action star Zoe Bell, who led Waller's last film Raze, and Twitch fave, director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Open Windows). Set in 1985, war photographer Avery Taggert (Zoë Bell) has built a solid career with her stark and honest imagery, all the while remaining emotionally distant from her subjects. When she embeds in the jungles of Colombia with a squad of missionaries led by a beloved and charismatic Spaniard known as "El Guero" (Nacho Vigalondo), she finds herself in the middle of a conflict as violent as any she's photographed. One night, she happens upon El Guero committing a heinous atrocity, capturing the vile act on film, an image with the...

While within the industry, stunt people are appreciated for their incredible work and discipline, not many of them reach the cult status of Zoë Bell. From her work on Xena: Warrior Princess to Kill Bill, and her transition to acting in Death Proof and Raze, Bell's story is not just one of luck and timing, but passion, commitment, and all-around skill and talent can and does get recognized. American indie production company Big Bad Film recently wrapped up their first project, the slasher film Bastard. And today they have released the first unrated teaser for their film. Get ready for some decent gore. It is ever so slightly Nsfw. Adam is an underground musician with a dedicated cult following. In his past time, he drives through the city in his classic Jaguar, collects music memorabilia, photographs, books, vintage musical instruments and old vinyls. He lives in an isolated home in the ruins of Detroit Michigan where he reunites with his enigmatic lover Eve. There, he enlists the help of one of his most dedicated fans (Anton Yelchin) to help collect the analog equipment he needs, and his doctor (Jeffrey Wright) to provide him with a steady supply of his favourite drink, type O-negative. In fact, this film will have its World Premiere there, this October 14th, 2014. The film takes a note from Eli Roth's Hostel (2005) as several vacationers are trapped and tortured, in Eastern Europe. Director: Josh C. Waller. Writers: Robert Beaucage, Kenny Gage and Josh C. Waller. Cast: Zoë Bell, Rachel Nichols, Tracie Thoms and Bruce Thomas. The female prison movies of the '60s and '70s focused on sexploitation. In these films, semi-naked shower scenes and brawls were plentiful. But, the filmmakers of Raze have chosen to alter this genre from the sexy to the blood-filled. In Raze, several characters partake in an all women fighting tournament, which lasts until there is only one survivor. Director Josh C. Waller and the writing team of Robert Beaucage and Kenny Gage have created a thrilling action focused tale, here. Dramatic elements and characterizations are relegated to a few scenes of dialogue and flashbacks. Instead of focusing exclusively on the characters and story, Raze deals with one woman's struggle out of bloodsport and her battle with psychopathic tournament directors. Raze's violent visual spectacle is...

Fox (Kill Bill), Kristanna Loken (Terminator 3), Brigitte Nielsen (Rocky IV) and Cynthia Rothrock (China O’Brien), Mercenaries is the latest movie from purveyors of all things exploitation The Asylum, who it seems are getting the jump on their Hollywood counterparts by releasing what is essentially an all-female take on The Expendables.
The official synopsis reads thus:
A diplomatic official is captured and imprisoned while touring a war zone, so a team of elite female commandoes is assembled to infiltrate a women’s prison for a daring rescue.
Which is less of a synopsis and more of an excuse to see some fantastic butt-kicking action from the cast which includes two of the best female action stars ever – Zoe Bell (who kicks mucho arse in the recently released Raze) and the legend that is Cynthia Rothrock.
I just hope that director Christopher Olen Ray lets...

Produced by its star, stuntwoman turned actress Zoe Bell, Raze has seemingly been “coming soon” for an eternity. I distinctly remember first reading about it way back in 2011 and it’s only now, some three years later, that the film is finally seeing the light of day here in the UK. It’s been a long wait but it has Definitely been worth it!
Raze follows kickboxer Sabrina (Bell), who wakes up to find herself in an underground bunker. Soon she realizes that this bunker is actually a modern day coliseum of sorts, where, along with 48 other women, they are condemned to fight each other to the death. The game organizers, turn their kidnapping victims into violent femmes by threatening to...

I presume that Raze was pitched as Girlfight meets Saw, since that’s the most apt way to describe this pseudo-horror film. After awaking from a mediocre date, Jamie (Rachel Nichols) realizes that she’s been abducted. Imprisoned in the underground bunker with her are a group of women who share a similar fate as hers. The woman must fight each other to the death in order to not only survive but also save the lives of their loved ones whom their captors are threatening.

Social media is the backbone of every episode of MTV’s Catfish; however, last night’s episode focused solely on Twitter. And what a tale it was. The story starts out surprisingly: Hollywood actress and singer Tracie Thoms, star of Hollywood “blockbusters” such as Rent and Death Proof. She is asking for Nev and Max’s help in finding out the truth behind one of her loyal fans whom she met through Twitter. She explains that she had been talking to Sammie for about two years due to her constant support of Tracie and her new independent film, Raze. Tracie explains that her connection with Sammie was … Continue reading →

Sometimes celebrities really are just like "normal people." Not only do they buy groceries and go to the park, they can also get caught up in the tangled web of a catfish, as Rent actress Tracie Thoms did in the latest episode of Catfish. By the time our boys arrived, Tracie had already discovered that one of her Twitter followers was pretending to be someone she was not. Wednesday's upcoming episode of Catfish: The TV Show isn't about romance. Instead, it's an eye-opening tale of how even celebrities are vulnerable to web deception.

Thoms shared how she formed a friendship with a girl named Sammie, after Sammie reached out over Twitter to help the star promote her film Raze. There is nothing complicated about Josh Waller's "Raze." It's a straight up genre flick, but served with a twist, putting women in the ass-kicking lead roles in the space that's usually reserved for men. And that gives the film a certain flavor you might want to check out as it heads to home video. Starring Zoe Bell ("Death Proof," "Planet Terror") and Rachel Nichols ("Conan The Barbarian," "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of The Cobra"), the story centers on Jamie, who awakens to find herself in a concrete bunker where she meets fellow abductee Sabrina. The women soon discover that they are in a modern-day coliseum where they and 48 other women have been selected to fight to the death, and only one can survive. It's harrowing stuff and it won't be easy to escape, and as you'll see in this exclusive deleted scene, trying to earn sympathy will only...

In the new thriller Grand Piano, a stage-fright-stricken classical pianist (Elijah Wood) is informed he must perform his comeback recital perfectly or get shot to death. Don’t you just hate it when that happens?
Directed by Eugenio Mira (Agnosia) and costarring John Cusack and Alex Winter, the film opens theatrically in New York and Austin, Tx., today. To mark the film’s release, we spoke to Wood about tickling the ivories — and why it pays to hang out in Austin bars.
Entertainment Weekly: Grand Piano looks like it was a very difficult film to make from a technical standpoint.

New Zealander Zoë Bell is an unusual Hollywood triple threat. She's an internationally recognized stunt woman thanks to the documentary Double Dare and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. She's an actress with credits opposite Gerard Butler (Gamer), Ellen Page (Whip It) and Tom Cruise (Oblivion). And with her latest movie Raze, this ass-kicking leading lady has also turned producer. While Bell is proud of all she's achieved so far and grateful for her loyal fan following, she's not done yet. When I sat down with her ahead of the release of her gritty women-in-prison thriller, we not only discussed Raze (read the first half of the interview here), but also covered a wide range of projects and challenges Bell is eager to take on. Ranging from Marvel superheroes to The ExpendaBelles and breaking into the Fast & Furious franchise, this charismatic Renaissance woman shares six dream projects she's fighting to make real.

With the release of Zoe Bell’s new flick, Raze, in theaters and on Video on Demand, we are reminded of all the modern-day grindhouse films that we’ve come to enjoy over the past 14 years. The genre, named after theaters (in particular defunct burlesque theaters in New York City) that primarily showed exploitation films, plays on its low budget, niche appeal and, often times, lurid subject matter. Raze like the 9 other films on this list, keeps things bloody, raunchy and fun. (Just don’t watch these with your mother!)

The indie circuit has heard our pleas, and is attempting to push the boundaries regarding women in film. Though its attempts are both thoughtful and necessary, this journey is just beginning. Today marks the IFC release of indie flick “Raze,” starring stuntwoman-turned-actor Zoë Bell and a slew of other women, including Tracie Thoms (“Looper”), Rachel Nichols, Sherilyn Fenn, and a brief appearance from Rosario Dawson. Bell's character Sabrina leads a group of women made to fight to the death at the hands of an elite society. What would make them do such a horrible thing? If they lose a fight, their loved ones die. If they win a fight, their opponent dies at their hands, but their loved ones live. There can only be one winner. “Raze,” which stars and was produced by Bell, features a cast of 23 women. Looking at the state of the industry when it comes to casting females as leads,...

The women-in-prison genre gets a contemporary reworking in the grisly slugfest “Raze.” There’s no sex or nudity in this film, which pairs off a large ensemble of actresses in a series of increasingly violent fistfights to the death, and some audiences might find this a cause for celebration—Bechdel Test enthusiasts especially should take note of how insignificant men are in these women's lives. But perhaps it’s how we find titillation in the modern world—the cast takes turns getting brutalized by each other while under the rule of sadistic prison guards, and these women respond to bloodshed with more and more nastiness. Is it empowering when one prisoner flings feces at a brutish male guard if sex is never once put on the table? The start of the film allows the assumption that Rachel Nichols, the biggest name in the cast and also a producer, will be our heroine Jamie.

In Josh Waller’s movie Raze, 50 women — including Death Proof co-stars Zoë Bell and Tracie Thoms – are abducted and made to fight each other to the death in a subterranean complex overseen by Doug Jones and Sherilyn Fenn. While the film has all the ingredients of an exploitation movie, Waller gifts the result with a serious flavor that sets it apart from your average women-in-prison slice of shlock.
