Hulu is staking its claim in the realm of stand-up comedy specials.
The streamer announced its very own stand-up brand, “Hulu’s Laughing Now,” during Disney’s Upfront presentation on Tuesday. A new comic will be featured each month with 12 specials expected throughout the year.
“Hulu’s Laughing Now” will launch in November with Jim Gaffigan as the first comedian to host a special under the banner. Gaffigan’s special “The Skinny” will bow on November 22. The set was taped earlier this year in Boston at the Wilbur Theater.
“With the launch of ‘Hulu’s Laughing Now,’ we are excited to round out Hulu’s world-class comedy offering with a lineup of some of the funniest voices in stand-up comedy today,” Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group said in a statement. “Our slate is a true celebration of the art of stand-up, and we plan to make this a best-in-class...

Hulu is set to air Jim Gaffigan’s next comedy special as the launch title of the streamer’s new standup comedy brand.
Gaffigan’s new special, “The Skinny,” will debut on Nov. 22 under the new “Hulu’s Laughing Now” brand. The brand will feature 12 new comedy specials per year, or one per month. The announcement was made as part of Disney’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on Tuesday.
“This is probably the biggest announcement that will happen to television since the invention of the TV dinner,” Gaffigan said onstage. “They’re doing it not half assed. They’re doing it full assed. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say that.”
“The Skinny” was taped earlier this year in Boston at the Wilbur Theater. The special, Gaffigan’s 11th stand-up special, will launch on Hulu and on Disney+ outside the U.S.

When Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels thinks of those who inspired him, Patrik-Ian Polk easily comes to mind.
Known for telling groundbreaking stories centered on Black gay life — including the independent film Punks, which premiered at Sundance in 2000, and Noah’s Arc, which ran on Logo TV for two seasons from 2005-06 — Polk is a creative force who has chronicled (and continues to chronicle) the lives of underrepresented people while championing diversity way before “Dei” became a buzz term.
“[Polk] was way ahead of the curve, and he took the bullets for all of us when it just wasn’t accepted to do what he was doing,” Daniels, 63, says of Polk, 49. “His bravery is what I ran with in my career. I learned from Patrik that I wasn’t going to take no for an answer. When I say he really has inspired me — he’s a mentor.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the 11th episode of “Better Call Saul” Season 6, titled “Breaking Bad.”
After their “Better Call Saul” cameos were teased by the show’s co-creator Peter Gould before the start of the sixth and final season, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were finally back as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman Monday night.
The two Emmy winners reprised their roles for the first time on the “Breaking Bad” prequel, just a few years after they shared the screen briefly in “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.” After fans theorized about when Walt and Jesse would show up, they were introduced during a flashback to “Breaking Bad” Season 2 Episode 8, an episode titled “Better Call Saul,” which introduced Bob Odenkirk’s character.
That 2009 episode of “Breaking Bad” was also the first time we heard the names of the characters Lalo and Ignacio, but at...

Craig Roberts’ “Eternal Beauty,” a romantic drama with Oscar-nominee Sally Hawkins, has sold North American rights to Samuel Goldwyn Films. The indie label will release the film on-demand this fall, an increasingly popular option at a time when many movie theaters are closed due to coronavirus.
Roberts, a writer, director, and actor, who has appeared on screen in the likes of “Red Oaks” and “Submarine,” and slid behind the camera on “Just Jim,” penned the script for “Eternal Beauty.” In addition to Hawkins, who scored Oscar nods for “The Shape of Water” and “Blue Jasmine,” the accomplished ensemble includes David Thewlis (“Harry Potter” franchise) Alice Lowe (“Prevenge”), Billie Piper (“Doctor Who”), and Penelope Wilton (“Zoo”).

Before Sundance fully embraced television, it was already making small screen dreams come true.
“Last year, our wildest dream coming into the Episodic Short Form program was to sell our web series to television, and that’s exactly what happened,” Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern said to IndieWire.
Feldman and Stern created a series called “The Chances” that premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. It’s returning to Sundance in 2018, but this time as a fully-fledged TV show with distribution, a full first season in the can, and an official release date — February 14, 2018.
“That web series was picked up from Sundance last year by Sundance Now, developed out from its short-form to a long-form of 22-minute episodes […] and they’ve already shot the first season,” Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro said in an interview with IndieWire. “So we’re showing that in our independent series, because it’s Sundance Now, but...

The Boys in the Choir: Polk’s Antiquated Rendition of the Rural Gay Narrative
The blatant underrepresentation of black gay characters in film, whatever letter they’re placed into on the inclusive Lgbt spectrum, is simply not reason enough to appreciate the elemental contrivances of Patrik-Ian Polk’s Blackbird, an independent film rife with cliché in its euphemistic depiction of the rural queer experience that does little to elevate the film’s archaic nature.
The title has been inadvertently thrown into a higher caliber pop culture zeitgeist thanks to its distinction as Mo’Nique’s first post-Oscar role since her 2009 win for Best Supporting Actress in Precious. The significant media coverage concerning potential fallout between herself and director Lee Daniels should enhance the film’s shelf-life beyond the trappings of a niche market. Produced by the actress and her agent/husband Sidney Hicks, the project feels very much like the...

With past films like The Skinny and Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom, writer-director Patrik-Ian Polk has become known for steamy ensemble dramedies about the lives and romantic woes of black gay men. His latest, Blackbird, while focused on a younger set of characters with tamer sexual history, has Polk’s imprint all over it, painting a vivid picture of the struggle, shame and awkwardness that comes with growing up black and gay in a tiny Mississippi town.Newcomer Julian Walker stars as Randy, a good-natured choirboy with a gorgeous voice and a host of personal issues – his little sister’s disappearance, the separation of his parents (played by Mo’Nique and Isaiah Washington), his...

It's no surprise that summer tends to bring out the hottest guys in New York. And as the dog days of summer start to wane on the streets of the Big Apple, it's time to once again turn our attention to where the hottest of the hot like to spend their time: the New York stage.
Sure, movies and television have their share of rippling abs, but glimpsing a hottie on the screen is nothing compared to the live, in-the-flesh experience. So without further ado, we present the Hottest Guys of New York Theater!

In celebration of Pride Week, five gay friends and recent Brown graduates meet up in New York, catalysing one sexy, dynamic reunion. The Skinny, a dramedy by Logo favorite Patrik-Ian Polk (Punks, Noah’s Arc) explores many aspects of the Lgbtq community, including promiscuity, monogamy, drugs and HIV–and especially focuses on the issues faced by different races in the gay community, a topic not explored nearly enough in film and TV.
Polk’s coming-of-age tale earned him a “Fusion Achievement Award” (which acknowledges people of color in Lgbtq film) at the 2012 Outfest Fusion, and stars Jussie Smolett (The Mighty Ducks, North), Blake Young-Fountain, Anthony Burrell, Shanika Warren-Markland and Jeffry Bowyer-Chapman. Other actors include Darryl Stephens (Noah’s Arc), Jennia Fredrique (Noah’s Arc), Wilson Cruz (Noah’s Arc), Seth Gilliam (Punks), newcomer Dustin Ross and internet sensation B. Scott.
