Predator of the Sky
This is one of my favorite shoot em ups of all time. Toplan is one of my favorite video game companies of all time as it's practically the king of the Shoot Em Up genre. Each of the shooters along with action games they delivered have always been a hit and rarely any misses at least ones I don't know of yet. This game of course is one of those hits; though the game was a hit in the arcades, I unfortunately never got to play it in the arcades as there were not cabinets at my local arcades. I mainly heard about this game and played it on the "Sega Genesis", this helped it gained altitude in popularity as time went on making it a cult gem among shooter fans.
Nothing special about the plot as it's pretty much an alternate World War 2 shooter where you just simply go on your missions and blow anything away that moves and shoots back. That's it's in a nutshell, it's the same with most to all shooters but that's fine by me as really all you need is press start, start shooting, and don't die; this once again shows how simplicity in shooters is always the right flight path.
This game as a whole might not seem like anything special which is the same with most shooters but it's really in it's execution that makes it stand out. The graphical presentation is crisp, really like the detail in the background and the enemies that come your way. Along with the bosses whom are always oversized tanks and assault vehicles as usual, though I always find it funny how a vehicle that looks like it can destroy multiple personnel can get taken down almost easily by one. Music is great, this game has some of the best memorable tracks you'd ever hear, like the suttle tune for when you land after a mission, that tune is rather soothing and relaxing but also gives you the feeling you've really accomplished a big mission to the best of your ability.
But of course, what really makes this game is the gameplay. The gameplay is great, control handles well and the fire and hit detection is spot on. But there are several things that make the game stand out. One of them is in the pacing. The pacing is just right as it's fast and almost furious, you have enemies just coming at you from all sides which means plenty of explosions and demolition work on your hands, there is almost not one moment in the game where you have time to really take a breath. Even like how the levels are layered, it actually feels fair where certain surprises and challenges come out at the right times but also the levels aren't too long so you don't overstay your welcome which means the game is able to keep up it's momentum. I even like the difficulty is at a moderate level which I don't see much in the shooter genre as most are just insanely hard. Having it at the moderate difficulty I felt kept the game fair as there are some parts of the game that might be breeze but can quickly become challenging in some places. It also helps in making the game a little more accessible to rookies of the shooter genre and non fans but simply for even shooter fans that just feel like playing a game that is somewhere that's in the middle ground of challenge.
One thing that really makes the game unique and was revolutionary for it's time as shooters didn't have this feature at the time and that's in how you power up. When your assigned a certain weapon and you collected enough colored blocks that represent the weapon, your fire power increases. There are different kind of weapons with strengths and weaknesses, like your spread shot fire, lasers, missiles, but my absolute favorite the flame thrower. It's like art in motion just seeing when your flame thrower weapon is at full power, you are like an unstoppable force as the flames just almost cover the whole screen burning and destroying everything in it's path; even the bosses life expectancy gets quickly reduced by it. If you ever get the flame thrower weapon and get to the highest level, use it for all it's worth and hang on to it as long as you can because it's a sweet ride.
Overall, this is a game I would recommend to fans of Retro shooters though also even rookies that are just getting into the genre, this game is actually a pretty good place to start. "Fire Shark" blazes the air with glory.
Rating: 4 stars.
